1 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish 5112 Pocono Crest Rd. P.O. Box O Pocono Pines, PA Parish Office: (570) Fax: (570) Web Page: Welcome To all who are tired and need rest; to all who mourn and need comfort; to all who are friendless and need friendship; to all who are discouraged and need hope; to all who are homeless and need sheltering love; to all who sin and need a Savior; and to whomsoever will, the Parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe opens wide its doors in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! March 23, 2014 Third Sunday of Lent Our Mission Statement We of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish believe that we have been gifted with Life, Faith and Discipleship. Empowered by Jesus in Word and Sacrament, we are called to grow in wisdom, grace and fidelity to His Church by following the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Working Together to Build the Kingdom of God

2 March 23rd, 2014 Third Sunday of Lent THIRSTING FOR UNITY In today s Gospel, Jesus is thirsty and goes to the well for a drink of water. He meets a Samaritan woman, who expects him to treat her like dirt. But surprise! He talks to her like a fellow human being, treats her with respect and interest. And what happens? Why, pretty soon the whole town turns out to hear him. Centuries earlier, the Israelites, wandering in the desert, were thirsty. They had no water. All they had was an attitude problem. They growled at Moses, Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? But surprise! God gave them water from the rock. No questions asked. All the peoples of Earth are travelers on this planet together, all thirsting, all harboring our own fearful expectations of each other. But God, as a loving parent, treats us all with generous care and compassion. We are one family. We could surprise each other. We could remember we are one. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Parish Office Hours Monday through Wednesday 9-4 pm Thursday 9-Noon Friday - CLOSED St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend Daniel J. Yenkevich ~ Administrator, pro tem Deacon Frank Gisoldi ~ deaconf@ptd.net Mrs. Lynnette Smith Coordinator of Religious Education/ Pastoral Associate ~ lysmith@ptd.net Marion Colvin Office Manager ~ mcol@ptd.net John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Especially during the Lent and Easter seasons, we are very conscious of the communal nature of baptism. We stand witness to the baptism of adults at the Easter Vigil in many parishes, and countless parishes celebrate festive baptisms for infants. The rule for celebrating baptism is that it be only once a day in any parish church, a sign of the Church s desire that baptism be the work of the gathered community. Private baptism is therefore a misnomer, since all baptisms, even emergency baptisms for infants in danger of death, are a public act of entrance in to the Body of Christ, the Church. In an emergency, and providing the parents desire it, anyone can baptize by pouring water and saying, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But then afterward the Church is encouraged to supply what is missing: the gathered assembly to proclaim and hear God s word, the promises, the naming, the anointings, the clothing with a white garment, the candle, the Lord s Prayer, and the solemn blessing of the parents at the altar. Wonderfully, this ritual often provides the opportunity for great rejoicing at the recovery of an infant who had been in danger. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Reflecting on God s Word In today s Gospel account the woman at the well must have expected Jesus to be hostile toward her. As a Samaritan woman and a sinner, she was considered unclean by the Jews. No wonder she seems afraid and defensive in her answers to Jesus. Yet Jesus tells her the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She tells Jesus the truth, too, but it is only a partial truth, the truth that she is willing to admit to herself and to this stranger. When he responds by speaking the whole truth about her past, why doesn t she harden her heart and protest his rudeness, or simply take her bucket and go? It must be the love beneath his testimony that allows her to hear and accept the truth about who she is and who Jesus is. Then, perhaps for the first time in her life, she is free to testify the whole truth to everyone she meets. Only love can break through the defenses that we erect to hide the truth from ourselves and others. Only love can reveal the truth about a God who responds to our thirsts and ignores our fear and faithlessness. Only love can account for the fact that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Copyright 2013, World Library Publications.

The correct perspective is that of eternity, for which life at every phase is a meaningful preparation. Old age too has a proper role to play in this process of gradual maturing along the path to eternity. And this process of maturing cannot but benefit the larger society of which the elderly person is a part. ~ Blessed John Paul II, Letter to the Elderly, All are invited to join us for Morning Prayer at 8 a.m. preceding the 8:15 Daily Mass or Communion Service.
