2 April 22, th Sunday of Easter SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED Some city teenagers often scorn and reject farm kids. Yet it s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world s crops and livestock. This week s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John s letter we hear that we have become God s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God s beloved flock? English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn t take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.. The Resurrection was a mere aspect of Christ's selfgiving mission. Jesus came from the Father (his birth). He did the Father's will on earth (his ministry). And he gave himself back to the Father (his death, resurrection, and ascension). In every step, he loved and gave all for others. In every step, Jesus revealed the face of the Father to the world. Notice Jesus was not only the intermediary. He embodied the Father's offer of love and our positive response. That is the reason his death forgave sins once and for all. In his death, we find the Father's love for us and we find our perfect response to that love. He did it all for us. We could never add to or improve upon his sacrifice. Jesus gave his all for us. He did it for love. The love he had for the Father. The love he had for all people. In that love he claimed his place as the Good Shepherd. We are to shepherd in the same fashion, to sacrifice out of love. We are to lead by giving of self for the good of others. More important, we are to lead in a way that brings others to Christ and through Christ to the Father. So we can lead in this fashion, we need to sacrifice self interest and ego. But the rewards of love make that sacrifice worth the cost.

A Confirmation Parent Meeting will be held Sunday, April 29, in the church s cry room immediately following 10:30 a.m. Mass. All parents of eight grade students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 are expected to attend. SCRIPTURE SHARING Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. in the parish hall. All are welcome to join us as we reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming weekend. Youth Group meetings are held the second and fourth Sundays after 10:30 a.m. Mass in the parish hall and Junior Youth Group will meet Saturday, May 5th from 5-6:15 p.m. in the parish hall. LIGHT THE FIRE YOUTH RALLY If you are in grades 8-12, you are warmly invited to attend this year s Light the Fire Youth Rally held at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. on Wednesday, June 27. Confirmation students will attend the youth rally as their Confirmation retreat, free of charge. All other teens are welcome to join our parish as well for a cost of $30 per person. Transportation will be provided by the parish. The rally consists of powerful speakers, workshops, confession, Eucharistic Adoration, Mass with Bishop Bambera, food, fellowship and so much more. DON T MISS THE VIDEO PRESENTATION: NINE DAYS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD On Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m., join St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish for the video presentation, Nine Days that Changed the World. The video explores Pope John Paul II's historic pilgrimage to Poland in June of 1979, which created a revolution of conscience that transformed Poland and fundamentally reshaped the spiritual and political landscape of the 20th Century. Following the presentation in the church, join us for refreshments featuring homemade Polish desserts in Our Lady of the Lake Hall.
