2 February 5, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription Title of the Cross, and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. Being salt and light is not optional. Jesus did not say you can be...or you have the potential to be...he said you are. Everyone who has trusted Christ for salvation and is born again is the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

4 Parish Life CCD CLASS TIMES Pre- K/K Classes are held in the first classroom during 10:30 Mass. Grades 1-5 meet from 9-10:15 am. *Grades 6, 7, & 8/Confirmation will meet from 11:30 am 1:00 pm. (*If they attend 10:30 Mass, please send a snack/ lunch for your child to eat before class begins.) FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING #1 will be at 7 pm on Wednesday, February 8. It is essential that each family is represented. Babysitting will be provided. THIS WEEKEND is SOUPERBOWL SUNDAY Since 1990, young people have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect dollars and food in the weeks leading up to the Big Game. Teaming up with local partners, these groups give 100% of donations to local charities, changing the nation's largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring. Our Parish Family has regularly participated in this event, and we appreciate your continuing support. Canned goods and monetary donations collected this weekend benefit our Ecumenical Food Pantry. ADULT LITURGICAL MINISTERS DAY OF REFLECTION REFRESHER SESSION on Saturday, February 25th Noon to 2 pm Fr. Sean has requested that ALL Adult Liturgical Ministers- Lectors/Commentators, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Music Ministers and Ushers be present. This afternoon will provide an opportunity to reflect on the spirituality of our service at the liturgy, to grow in our awareness of how the various ministries complement one another, and to refresh procedures and address how we might help to enhance our parish liturgical experiences. ST. MAX HOSTS MINISTRY TO THE DISABLED What? An evening of networking and sharing of ideas/ resources Who should attend? DREs, pastors, catechists, buildings-and-grounds committee members and anyone interested in finding ways to better minister to and include parishioners with physical or mental disabilities Presenters: Bernadette Rudolph will facilitate networking and sharing of ideas/resources. Rev. Dick Hockman, CSC, will speak about the spiritual needs/abilities of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and introduce the SPRED program. Fr. Dick has a professional background and long history in special education and assists the Diocese of Scranton in parish-based SPRED pro-grams. When and Where? THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP meets downstairs in the Parish Hall on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 am; our next session will be on Wednesday, February 8th. It is not necessary to be a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in order to attend this ecumenical group. Anyone who has experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or separation is encouraged to attend. The compassionate presence of people who have journeyed through the bereavement process offer support for the newly bereaved and for those who may have delayed the process or who still need assistance. Most shawls are knitted and crocheted, but they can be woven, or sewn. Our volunteers who give time and talent so that others may experience the power of prayer, love and compassion. The Catholic Church has declared February 8th as an International Day of Prayer and Awareness about Human Trafficking. February 8th is the Feast of St. Josephine Bakhita, born about 1869 in Darfur, Sudan, abducted as a child by Arab Slave Traders, sold repeated and abused horribly, until through a legal decision in Italian court she was declared free. St. Josephine Bakhita entered the community of the Canossian Sisters and lived a life of great holiness. She died on Feb. 8, 1947, was canonized in 2000 and is recognized as the Patron Saint of Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking. There is still a need for school uniforms and toddler clothing. Hours of distribution for clothing are Thursday from 8 am to 10 am.
