Psalm -- The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65). Second Reading -- We, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel -- Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12:00 pm FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today's readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God's word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office, You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on August 12/13.
4 44 Weeks until Dedication of new Church! Day by day progress continues on our property: lots of dirt had to be relocated to make the land level and that part of the project is almost done. This week work will begin on the retaining wall: this is the wall on the interior perimeter of our church along Mesa Park and Russell; it will be constructed with caliche, that tough desert rock found throughout the landscape here in southern Nevada. Within a week or two, the parking lot will be under construction; that should be done by late August or early September. Be sure to check our website ( on a regular basis for updates, photos and drone videos. July 15 is the mid-point of the three summer months of June, July and August. But actually, many families are ending their summer activities before September because of most schools now starting regular classes in mid-august. So, I hope you all enjoy the last few weeks of summer leisure, travel and vacations. Many of our own programs, likewise, start up again in sync with school calendars. Therefore, be sure to register new or re-register (required every year) if you have children or teens in our Faith Formation Programs: pre-k through 5, Edge (middle school, 6 through 8) and Upper Room (high school, 9 through 12). Unfortunately, because of construction and the necessity of our three trailers/modulars being moved off the property and being replaced by one large 6-wide trailer/modular, we will not be able to run the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) this coming school year; I am very sorry about this as it is such a great program, but I promise that we will return CGS as soon as possible. Over the course of construction, there are going to be many changes, modifications and sacrifices of our programs, schedules, meeting places etc. We want to continue the busy work of our parish as much as possible, but some things are going to be different over the next 11 months. Please be patient and work with us. Then when the church is completed, we will look at all of our programs and schedules and be more fully functional. The 6-wide trailer/modular will stay on the property until the second building is completed: the Parish Life Center, which will contain all of our offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, youth center and a large parish hall for dining, assemblies, large group gatherings, receptions, entertainment, etc. Finally, our seminarian, Rogelio Molina, is winding up his summer internship at Holy Spirit; Rogelio has been very well received and has made an impact on our parish. There is a Sending Forth Mass for all seminarians returning to seminary studies; this Mass is on Tuesday, August 8, at the Guardian Angel Cathedral at 6:00 p.m. I hope that many of us can attend this Mass and show Rogelio our gratitude and support. Have a great week! NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 4
5 Cross brings life to Crosiers in Africa The Crosier Fathers and Brothers are finding new life in the war-torn country of the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa. Thirty Congolese Crosier priests and two brothers are guiding 84 men through religious formation and theology studies. The economy, political climate and war do not offer any real possibility for people to earn a viable living. Support is critical for the Crosiers to continue their work and to maintain housing, educational and medical needs of the men in formation, and the existing Crosier members. One of their greatest priorities is education for religious life and priesthood. The Crosiers want to prepare the next generation to be holy and capable guides for the Congolese people. Fr. Bob Rossi, osc, will be visiting our parish the weekend of July 29-30, to speak to us about the Crosiers missions in Africa. Please welcome them!
