(Closed Sundays) TODAY S READINGS First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. 4 First Sunday of Advent - December 3, 2017 Cheers! Now that we are in Ordinary Time -- with no major feasts on our Sundays, I want to do a series of teaching bulletins in this weekly column; actually, there will be two series: 1] on the Sacraments (last two Sundays of January and first Sunday of March) and 2] on the Sunday Mass/Liturgy (the four Sundays of February). The Sacraments of Initiation There are three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. These three Sacraments, like all the Sacraments, actually follow the rhythm of our own lives. In the Gospel today, Jesus changes water into a precious wine; so too, God takes the ordinary events and passages of our lives and touches them with grace and they become extraordinary: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019 Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory. Ordinary Event Sacramental Event Physical Birth into a family Baptism: born into God s family Physical Nourishment Eucharist: spiritual nourishment Physical Maturity Confirmation: maturity in faith Each Sacrament is based on Jesus teaching: Sacrament Baptism Eucharist Confirmation Scripture Passage Matthew 28: 19 Go... baptizing them in Luke 22: 19 Do this in memory of me. John 20: 22 Receive the Holy Spirit. Each Sacrament reveals to us a different aspect of our relationship to God: Sacrament Baptism Eucharist Confirmation Relationship of God to Us God the Father adopts us as God s children God the Son nourishes us with Body & Blood God the Holy Spirit guides & consoles us Each Sacrament has an outward sign to symbolize the spirituality of the Sacrament: Sacrament Baptism Eucharist Confirmation Outward Sign Water symbolizes new birth and cleansing Bread & Wine become Body & Blood of Jesus Laying on of Hands is sign of transfer of Spirit Each Sacrament has a formula (words) which also signify the meaning of the spiritual gift of grace: Sacrament Formula (Words) Baptism I baptize you in the name of the Father... 5 First Sunday of Advent - December 3, 2017 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 20, 2019 The New Beginnings Ministry at Holy Spirit Catholic Church is pleased to offer the DRAW IT OUT program. DRAW IT OUT is a program developed by Art with Heart in Seattle, WA., in 1996 by experts in the fields of bereavement, counseling, social work and art therapy. DRAW IT OUT will begin every other Thursday for 9 weeks starting January 17, 2019 from 4:00 until 5:15 in the Parish Life Center (PLC). The program is open to children 6 through 10 years of age. It is strictly a grief support group and not therapy nor counseling. Trained compassionate grief facilitators will offer resources and teach coping skills. Registration fee is $25 (includes workbook, craft supplies and snacks). Scholarships are available. Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church.
