1 Fourth Sunday of Lent March 31, 2019 Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 MASS SCHEDULE Monday - Saturday 7:30 AM Saturday: 4:00 PM Sunday: 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM & 5:00 PM OFFICE HOURS Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.; Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 PM Saturday 8:00 AM.-12:00 noon. Closed Sunday HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH 5830 Mesa Park Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada Parish Office (702) Reverend William J. M. Kenny (Fr. Bill), Pastor CHRISM MASS at HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH Monday, April 1 at 5:00 PM All Are Welcome to Attend Here the bishop blesses three oils the oil of catechumens, the oil of the infirm and holy chrism which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the diocese for the year. 2 CHEERS! Today is the midpoint of Lent: three weeks gone and three weeks until Easter Sunday! Like at the mid-point of Advent (called Gaudete Sunday), we wear rose-colored vestments for this Sunday which is called Laetare Sunday. The color rose is brighter than the more somber colors of Advent and Lent (different shades of violet or purple). The Latin words gaudete and laetare both mean rejoice. Once again, Bishop George Leo Thomas is visiting Holy Spirit parish as he celebrates on Monday, April 1, the Chrism Mass.... from Wikipedia: The Mass takes its name from the blessing of the holy oils used in the sacraments throughout the year, which are then given to priests/ministers to take back to their parishes. The Rite of Reception of the Oils by representatives of the diocesan parishes is a sign of each parish's unity with the Bishop and the diocesan Church. Whenever the holy oils are used, the ministry of the bishop who consecrated them is symbolically present. The oils distributed are meant to last all year, although extra oil is also blessed during the Mass and is kept at the cathedral as a reserve if a parish runs out. The Holy Oils are: Chrism used in sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, as well as for the consecration of altars and the dedication of churches The Oil of Catechumens also in sacrament of Baptism The Oil of the Sick used in the Anointing of the Sick During the Mass, those present are called to renew their baptismal promises; priests/ministers and deacons also reaffirm their ministry by renewing the promises made at their ordination. It is a great honor that Bishop Thomas has moved this Mass from the Cathedral (the usual setting) to Holy Spirit church. In the past, it has been the custom for only the priests to renew their vows, but Bishop Thomas is asking deacons and staff members as well to renew their commitment to church/parish ministry. You are welcome to attend this Mass at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, April 1. It should last about an hour to an hour and a half. It is a beautiful, moving liturgy. Look at the April calendar on page 10 to check out the schedule for Holy Week, Triduum and Easter Services. Have a good week! GOD FORGIVES The Lord said to Joshua, Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you. After forty years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The take-away for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
