Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on August 13/14.

4 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 17, 2016 If you enjoyed last week s Bulletin Bloopers, you might enjoy these answers actually written by children in a Bible Quiz. The answers often seem to reflect what children hear with their untrained ears ; e.g., Hail Mary, full of grapes or Our Father who aren t in heaven. If you don t understand the funny answer, I ll explain it in the parentheses following. 1. The first book of the Bible is Guinness's. In the book of Guinness Adam and Eve were created from an apple (Hmm could they mean Genesis?) 2. Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was Joan of the Ark. Noah built the ark and the animals came on in pears. 3. Moses went to the top of Mount Cyanide to get the 10 Commandments. (Mount Sinai is the real name.) 4. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. 5. The seventh commandment is thou shalt not admit adultery. 6. Lot's wife was a pillar of salt by day and a ball of fire by night. 7. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the apostles. 8. The greatest miracle in the bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he actually obeyed him. (Joshua actually asked God to make the SUN stand still so he could have a longer day to wage a battle and the sun did stand still.) 9. Unleavened bread is bread made with no ingredients. 10. A Christian should have only one wife. This is called monotony. 11. Joshua led the Hebrews in the battle of Geritol. (Of course, the real place is Jericho.) 12. Solomon had 100 wives and 700 porcupines. (Solomon had 700 concubines who were women, usually slaves, who were kept by a man, but not married to him.) 13. The epistles were the wives of the apostles. 14. When Mary heard she was the mother of Jesus, she sang the Magna Carta. (Mary sang the Magnificat.) 15. When the three wise guys from the east side arrived they found Jesus sacked in the manager. 16. The people who followed the Lord were called the 12 decibels. 17. St. Paul cavorted to Christianity. Beginning August 7th, the 8:00 a.m. Mass will change to 7:30 a.m., and the 10:00 a.m. Mass will change to 9:30 a.m.! Parishioner Discounts for Bishop Gorman High School Every year, we are asked by families to certify them as Active at Holy Spirit so they can receive the parishioner discount at Gorman. In order to qualify as an active family, you must meet the following requirements: Must be formally registered at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Support the parish in at least ONE of the following ways: 1) Regular financial support by way of weekly/monthly contributions. (These can only be verified by using checks, parish contribution envelopes, or e-tithing. 2) Make a pledge to Building God s House, Our Home 3) Be a regular volunteer in one of our parish ministries or programs (i.e. reader, music minister, catechist, Eucharistic minister, outreach team, hospitality minister, social committee, etc.) The affidavits for are due at Gorman by September 30, 2016, so if you are new to the parish, or if you do not meet the qualifications at this time, please plan to submit your affidavit to the parish by September 15th. This will give you time to establish yourself as an active family in the parish. Food for the Poor Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are most appreciated. When you grocery shop, buy an extra staple item such as peanut butter, jelly, cereals, tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, etc. and leave it in you car to bring with you to Mass.

5 As most people would be, I was a little nervous going on my first ever mission trip even though I knew I was in good hands with all the adults and my friends going. I researched pictures and videos of what to expect, but no internet description can be compared to what it actually feels like there. The first day, we fed the residents and I watched a few second or third year missionaries to see how it's done. To me, this is one of my favorite parts. Getting to spend an hour with the residents, seeing their smiles and reactions to everything is inspiring. One of the children I connected with was Courtney. He is a young boy who is handicapped and blind, but his awareness was amazing. On the last day, one of the other missionaries and I were sitting with Courtney in the chapel and whenever one person would walk in, Courtney would turn his head to where he thought they were entering. He couldn't see that they came in, but he used his other senses to notice it. His ability to adapt to challenges like that amazed me and taught me not to take anything for granted, even something that seems so simple like my vision. He was so peaceful when he was laying down which meant he trusted us to protect him and keep him from harm s way. To me, that was the important part; getting the children to trust you, love you and relate to you. After this year, I am hoping I am able to go to Jamaica next year and see Courtney once again. Shannon Page 2017 Missionary NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 5

6 Registration is Open for 2016 / 2017 Pre-K - 5th Grade The Registration packet for: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, K-5th Grade Regular Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation will be available on the welcome tables at each entrance to Mass throughout the summer. You can also download the registration packet, 2016 / 2017 schedules and program information from our parish website or come and visit the parish office during office hours. Students (including those who attended class this year) need to re-register for enrollment into the September 2016 May 2017 program. Volunteers Needed We are a growing parish and in order to offer our programs CGS, Kindergarten, 1st 5th Grade RE and our Sacramental Preparation program, we need at least 65 Catechists, Aides, Hall and Parking Monitors. Are you called to share your faith with Holy Spirit s young community and serve in one of these roles? You can be a Catechist or Classroom Aide if you: Love God, Love Children & Love to talk about Jesus, are baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith & are aged ! Full Training for the programs being taught next year will be offered. You can be a hall monitor or parking supervisor if you: are 16 + and willing to give 70 mins of your time every Sunday we have class. We have had an INCREDIBLE week with our young parishioners learning all about Jesus being the light of the world. Confirmation at Holy Spirit is a two-year preparation program. Teens can enter the program as early as the 9th grade, as they have to be in 10th grade or above at the time of Confirmation. The Confirmation Preparation consists of 4-Parts: 1. Upper Room Life Nights 2. Formation & Sacramental Sessions 3. Confirmation Retreat (during Sacramental Year) 4. Parish Involvement The first year of preparation is called the FORMATION YEAR and the second year of preparation is called the SACRAMENTAL YEAR. Begun with love, knitted and blessed with prayer, shawls are given to those in need or having a memorable celebratory event. The patterns are simple and easy to get into even if you ve never had knitting or crochet needles in your hands, or if it s been a long time since you ve crocheted or knitted. The meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.
