THE ROCK Peter was Jesus choice to lead the fragile band of apostles. In today s Gospel, Simon is given a new name Peter, the rock. In John s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shepherd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep. And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we think about the durable rocklike quality that Jesus needed in a leader. Peter was appointed to his leadership position for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mistake his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through. They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 6: Contact Len Urso, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. In Loving Memory. BARBARA SASSO, an active parishioner of Holy Spirit since 2011, passed away on August 7, She is survived by her daughter Cheryl, seven grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis Gene Sasso. Please keep her family in your prayers. ROSE STASIAK, wife of Jim Stasiak, passed away on August 12, 2014, after a long illness. Rose was very active at Holy Spirit and will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathy and prayers to her husband and children. Page 3

4 It is Monday, August 18 just two days after we returned from Jamaica on our first Holy Spirit-sponsored Mission Trip. We were twenty-three missionaries, including myself. Here s a recap of our week: Saturday, August 9 This was mainly a travel day: from Las Vegas to Kingston, Jamaica on two Delta Airlines flights with a stopover in Atlanta. We left Las Vegas at 5:50 a.m. and arrived in Kingston at 7:00 p.m. (CDT). We traveled by bus for about an hour from the airport to our home for the week: Sophie s Place, had dinner (rice and beans), had a Community Meeting and went to sleep. Sunday, August 10 This was a day of rest. We had the first of our every morning and evening ritual of feeding the residents at Sophie s Place; the residents are those children, teens and a few young adults who are severely physically and/or mentally handicapped most of whom are confined all day long to wheel chairs. Most are unable to speak, some of them blind and all of them very dependent upon their caretakers and visitors like ourselves to feed and clothe them. We also attended Mass at St. Martin de Porres church (just a block away); the priest didn t show up, so I was asked to preside. It was a powerful experience: all of the Sophie s Place residents were there in wheel chairs. The Mass lasted well over 90 minutes and was filled with wonderful singing, clapping and shouts of joy (and laughter!) Sunday afternoon, Monday through Thursday, August On Sunday afternoon and for the next four days, we visited and toured many of the sites run by Mustard Seed, the parent organization. Each facility had a different resident population (from as few as 20 to as many as 120): boys only or girls only, infants, children and/or adults, HIV+, unwed mothers, adults ready to transition back to society, etc. On the four weekdays, we also did manual labor: picking weeds, moving bricks, painting, re-upholstering, preparing and distributing food bags, re-building a swing and slide set. Some of the work was really intensive, plus it was extremely humid! We all missed our dry desert climate. We all got very dirty and sweaty. Some of the other daily activities were: Morning and Noon Prayers, Mass, Community Meetings back at Sophie s Place, meals of rice and beans (always) plus chicken, fish, beef and goat. Since Jamaica is in the midst of a severe drought, we had to ration our water usage: showers were limited to 5 minutes in cold, barely drizzling water and some days we had no water at all! Of course, our drinking water was bottled and in plenty of supply. Most were really tired by 9:00 p.m. and crashed in the men s or women s bunk rooms; a few stayed up a little bit later and played cards. Wake-up was about 5:30 a.m. daily! Friday, August 15 A play day: we went to the beach for several hours and had a great time swimming in the warm, clear Caribbean water. We did some shopping at a Flea Market and Super Market. Saturday, August 16 We reversed our flight pattern from Kingston to Las Vegas, again by way of Atlanta. We landed at McCarran at 7 p.m. It s difficult to pick out a highlight of the trip for me, but surely celebrating Mass at St. Martin de Porres and at the different sites of Mustard Seed was right up there at the top of the list. The Masses were really CELELBRATIONS. The residents, though many were mentally and emotionally challenged, had such great joy at receiving Communion and nobody left early! Over the next many weeks, I am asking each of the 23 missionaries to share a highlight or memory of our Jamaican Trip in a special place in this weekly bulletin. My question to each of them was: Jamaica difference? (It s a pun!) Thanks for all your support of this first Mission Trip. Page 4 Summer Outreach project to benefit the children of The Outreach Committee needs help filling backpacks for the children going back to school in the fall. Backpacks & school supplies will be collected in August at Mass. If you can fill a backpack with school supplies, that would be great! These are some ideas Lined paper, pencils, erasers, rulers, crayons, washable markers, glue sticks, scissors (student size), stick pens, TRAINING FOR NEW MINISTERS OF CARE Once again we will be providing the necessary training for any of our interested parishioners that would like to be a Minister of Care. Our need is great. We minister to the Catholic patients at Southern Hills Hospital, in nearby Care Centers, Assisted Living and Rehab Centers as well as our home bound parishioners. The ministry consists of us bringing the Eucharist as well as our presence in a visit. The training will be held at Christ the Kind for five consecutive Thursday evenings - September 11th, 18th, 25th and October 2nd and 9th. The classes are from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The first class will be in Christ the King's Community Center. Here is an opportunity to put your faith into action. "When Lord, did we see you ill or in prison and not attend to yhour needs? I assure you, as often as you neglected to do it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to me." Matt 25:44. 5 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Catechesis of the Our atrium sessions begin on September 4, Thursday s 4:00 to 5:30 It has taken many people to get this amazing program running. We would like to take a moment to say thank you to all that have given your time and your talents to the children. From carpenters to people who have cut out small comets. There are people behind the scenes also Father Bill, the parish staff, all those who are connected with the life of the church. What you do will add to the rhythm, substance, and prayer life of the child. We can teach each of these children words and prayers but what they really need to know comes from their heart. Thank you for helping us to give these children a place to gather and have quiet time and nourish their relationship with God through Liturgy and the Bible. Generation to Generation Introduction Sessions Upon Registration, each Formation Year candidate will sign up for a Parent/ Teen Session called Generation to Generation. September 21st: United: Four Marks of the Church One September 28th: Sanctified: Four Marks of the Church Holy Louie Latina Director of Youth Ministry Grades 6-12 (702) LouieL@cox.net Upcoming EDGE Nights: Wednesdays 5:15-6:30pm Edge Registration for Year Edge is a Catholic middle school ministry aimed to present the truths of the Catholic faith in a hands-on and relevant format. The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church s mission to evangelize, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge. At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders. Edge is open to all those in middle school even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge. Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education. And special thanks to Jonathan, who has been so ready and willing to help from the moment he returned at Christmas time! It has been a privilege to be able to work with him for our special celebrations at Christmas, Triduum and Pentecost, and what a gift for our whole community to enjoy his amazing talent every week at the noon Mass! As he embarks on a new and exciting journey at the beginning of September, we bid him a fond farewell, asking that God continue to bless him and keep him until we meet again! Bon voyage, Jonathan! For Better and Forever Marriage Prep Program needs volunteers Holy Spirit currently has a marriage preparation program running in full force and is currently in need of sponsor couples. As a sponsor couple you help an engaged couple to prepare for Christian Marriage by inviting them into your home for a series of five or six weekly meetings. Your job is to "coach" them toward realistic expectations, not by lectures or claiming to have the perfect marriage, but by sharing experiences of the good and bad times in your own lives. You invite the couple into a process of reflection and discussion where both you and they grow to a better understanding of how to live and love as couples committed to marriage. If you've never been a sponsor couple before, get ready for what is going to be an enriching experience for your marriage! Sponsor couples benefit just as much from the process of sponsoring as the couples preparing for Christian Marriage!! Religious Ed Program for Grades K-5 Class Schedule K-5th - April 2013 SUNDAYS at 11:15 Gorman H.S. We are now taking registrations for the K-5 Religious Education Program for holyspiritreligiouseducation.blogspot.com reled@holyspiritlv.org Dear Religious Education Families, Hello and welcome to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Religious Education Program! As you are undoubtedly aware by now, our programs have undergone some significant changes from last year to this year, and we are pleased to be able to present and explain some of the highlights at this time: **All Religious Education classes are now held on SUNDAY mornings between the 10AM Mass and the soon-to-be-moved 12:30 PM Mass.** Classes will be held at Bishop Gorman High School (BGHS) starting at 11:15 AM and ending at 12:15 PM. The reasons for this change are numerous, including (1) ease of BGHS facility use on Sunday compared to weekday nights, (2) common weeknight schedule conflicts on the part of both families and teachers, (3) students who are tired after long days of school on weekdays, (4) the convenience of a single trip to BGHS for Mass and class as opposed to two trips per week, (5) traditional Sunday School association for families. Sacramental Preparation to be included in regular Sunday class. Although Sacramental Preparation remains a twoyear program at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, no longer will students need to attend two separate classes during a Sacramental Year. Rather, students who are eligible to receive Sacraments (students must be baptized, in their second year of Religious Education and at-or-above Second Grade level) will be grouped together in gradelevel preparation classes where they will learn both the regular Religious Education curriculum, as well as the Sacramental Preparation curriculum. Students who are not in Sacramental Preparation years will be grouped in classes with other students not preparing for Sacraments. Registration forms are available at Mass or in the parish office. There is a parent information form enclosed that has the class schedule for the year, as well as other important information.
