OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 1:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m. FEEDING THE WORLD With today s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word one expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and feed others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we feed the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to feed the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright J. S. Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 6: Contact Len Urso, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. Registration packets are available in the office or at Mass. First Communion is a two-year program, beginning as early as first grade. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. Page 3 Thank you for your continued generosity to Holy Spirit! Mass of Sending Forth: Seminarians Bishop Joseph A. Pepe invites the parishioners of the Diocese of Las Vegas to celebrate the Mass of Sending Forth for our seminarians as they prepare to depart for this year s studies. The Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall where you will have an opportunity to meet our seminarians and wish them well in the coming year. At present we have six men studying for the priesthood: Luke Burgis, Miguel Corral, Neil Guan, Daniel Monroe and our newest seminarian Maurico Espino. Felipe Jimenez will serve his pastoral year at St. Christopher Catholic Church for the school year.

4 Let us officially welcome Anna Forsberg: our new Director of Religious Education for Grades Kindergarten through 5th year. Anna and her husband, Jeremy, and their four-year-old daughter, Isla, have recently moved to Las Vegas from the U.K. Jeremy is a native Las Vegan, but had lived in England for 18 years working in Youth Ministry as a young man and then in several other jobs as well. His current occupation is CEO of Navada Group, a digital marketing firm. (Yes, that's how NAVADA is spelled!) Anna has a rich background in Religious Education, having taught elementary grade school religion for 15 years, been a vice-principal in a Catholic school, a consultant for the School District and the Diocese of Hexham-Newcastle, and managing director of RE Provide (a publishing and resource firm for religious educational materials) for the past eight years. We need more teachers, assistants, hall monitors and other volunteers for this Religious Education Program (K through 5). The program is a "Sunday School" model -- meeting in the time slot between the end of the 10:00 a.m. Mass and the beginning of the 12:30 p.m. Mass, that is, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The program is based on a school-year calendar (September through May observing holiday weekends). If you would like to volunteer, please call Anna at 702- HLY-SPRT ( ), extension 112 or her at annaf@holyspiritlv.org IF YOU ARE GOING TO VOLUNTEER, you are also invited to a "Meet and Greet" Anna on Thursday, 30 July, at 7:00 p.m. in the Upper Room Trailer (5830 Mesa Park Drive at Russell). Snacks will be served. Spouses are welcome. No need to RSVP. There will be an all-parish Meet and Greet for Anna on the weekend of August 8/9. At each Mass, I will introduce Anna and she will say a few words. Then, after each Mass, she will be in the back cafeteria to meet you. I would hope that many will take the time to stop and say hello and welcome to Anna, but especially those families who have children registered in the program grades Kindergarten through 5th year. Although Anna has extensive background in religious education, she wants to learn more about you, the families of Holy Spirit, and your expectations for our elementary level religious education program. Please plan to welcome the newest member of the Holy Spirit staff. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Next meetings: August 11 & August 18 (call for location) Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 4

5 ~Catechesis of the Good Shepherd~ Help me do it myself. The young child s motto could very well be, Help me do it myself. How many parents, if they heard their small child say, Help me would not race to the child s side to see how they could aid their child, prevent an accident or avoid an impending peril? Maria Montessori overheard a young child s comment, Help me do it myself. She realized the child s need for independence, in discovering his or her own capabilities. As a parent, it is sometimes easier and quicker to do things for our children, but when we step in and do it for them, we do not allow them the opportunity to become independent. If you heard your child say, Help me do it myself, how would you respond? In the atrium the call is Help me come to God by myself, do you have your 3-5 year old registered for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd! Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. BE. LOVE. Volunteers needed to bake bread for our weekend Masses Baking unleavened bread for our Masses is a very important and rewarding ministry. We have lost several of our regular bakers and are in need of new volunteers. Training is provided and bakers are scheduled on a rotating basis. If you are interested in joining this ministry, or would like more information, please call Peg Scillia, All Those Interested in Attending OLLV School Pre-K through 8 th Grade All parents with prospective students for the 2015 / 2016 school year are invited to stop by the school office to pick up an informational packet which contains documentation outlining the school screening process. If you are unable to stop by the office, please call and we will be happy to mail you a packet. There will be a test fee of $25 and can be paid on or before the day of the test. Please return the application form to the school office as soon as possible. Children must be 5 years of age on or before September 30, 2015 to be eligible for Kindergarten for the 2015 / 2016 school year. Due to the large amount of inquiries received, the screening appointments may become unavailable at any time and without notice.
