In today s first reading, Solomon certainly hits the jackpot. What prize could be greater than having God Almighty agree to give you whatever you ask for? Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of the earth s goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a prize. We should stop and examine what we are going to do with our prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread

Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. Pepe invites the parishioners of the Diocese of Las Vegas to celebrate the Mass of Sending Forth for our seminarians as they prepare to depart for this year s studies. The Mass will be celebrated at the Guardian Angel Cathedral on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow in Anderson Hall where you will have an opportunity to meet our seminarians and wish them well in the coming year. 4 Congratulations to our Deacon, John Breeden, who is retiring from the United States Air Force relinquishing his command of the 926th Group on July 31. John has served in the Air Force for 27 years; his overseas assignments were in the UK and Korea; in the USA, he has been stationed at Pope AFB in Fayetteville, NC, Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC and Nellis AFB here in Las Vegas. He has flown A-10s (warthog), MQ1s and MQ10s (drones). John, thank you for your service to our country and the cause of freedom around the world. We are proud of you and wish you the very best in your next career flying 737s for United Air Lines, beginning September 8. Summer Outreach project to benefit the children of The Outreach Committee needs help filling backpacks for the children going back to school in the fall. Backpacks & school supplies will be collected in July and August at Mass. If you can fill a backpack with school supplies, that would be great! The main park gate closes at 8:30 p.m. The show starts at about 8:05 p.m. Most people plan a picnic before the start of the show: so bring blankets or regular folding or patio chairs (you can also rent chairs for $1.00 if you re there early enough!); seating is divided into a blanket section (in the middle) and one chair section on each side. Of course, bring a picnic dinner (alcohol is allowed!); you can also buy at the concession stand a variety of items, including hot dogs, nachos, soda, water, ice cream, popcorn and candy. 5 Holy Spirit Mission Team 2014! We have 23 missionaries committed to travel to Jamaica this August to serve the poorest of the poor. We will be assisting with the daily care of the children: physical therapy, medical treatments, feeding, playing and sharing friendship & love. Food provided. 6:30-8:00pm August 31st : No Upper Room Labor Day Weekend Upcoming EDGE Nights: Edge Registration for Year Edge is a Catholic middle school ministry aimed to present the truths of the Catholic faith in a hands-on and relevant format. The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church s mission to evangelize, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge. At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders. Edge is open to all those in middle school even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge. Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education. 7 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time - - July 27, 27, 2014 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. We are now taking registrations for the K-5 Religious Education Program for holyspiritreligiouseducation.blogspot.com reled@holyspiritlv.org Dear Religious Education Families, Hello and welcome to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Religious Education Program! As you are undoubtedly aware by now, our programs have undergone some significant changes from last year to this year, and we are pleased to be able to present and explain some of the highlights at this time: **All Religious Education classes are now held on SUNDAY mornings between the 10AM Mass and the soon-to-be-moved 12:30 PM Mass.** Classes will be held at Bishop Gorman High School (BGHS) starting at 11:15 AM and ending at 12:15 PM. The reasons for this change are numerous, including (1) ease of BGHS facility use on Sunday compared to weekday nights, (2) common weeknight schedule conflicts on the part of both families and teachers, (3) students who are tired after long days of school on weekdays, (4) the convenience of a single trip to BGHS for Mass and class as opposed to two trips per week, (5) traditional Sunday School association for families. Sacramental Preparation to be included in regular Sunday class. Although Sacramental Preparation remains a twoyear program at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, no longer will students need to attend two separate classes during a Sacramental Year. Rather, students who are eligible to receive Sacraments (students must be baptized, in their second year of Religious Education and at-or-above Second Grade level) will be grouped together in gradelevel preparation classes where they will learn both the regular Religious Education curriculum, as well as the Sacramental Preparation curriculum. Students who are not in Sacramental Preparation years will be grouped in classes with other students not preparing for Sacraments. Registration forms are available at Mass or in the parish office. There is a parent information form enclosed that has the class schedule for the year, as well as other important information.
