CHANGE OUR LIVES In today s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out of their wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way through a third of the city, and God sees by their actions how they have turned from evil. Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that the world in its present form is passing away. He calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he urges them rather mysteriously to live as though they aren t doing the things they re doing. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, The kingdom of God is at hand! The apostles-tobe abandon their nets and follow him. Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 6: Contact Len Urso, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. Registration packets are available in the office or at Mass. First Communion is a two-year program, beginning as early as first grade. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. 4 By the time you get this, our group of 37 persons will have arrived in Israel. We left Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 21 and should have arrived in Tel Aviv on Thursday, January 22, and were supposed to go immediately to our hotel in Jerusalem. I m sure all has gone well. I hope to keep in touch with all of you by sending a Bulletin from Israel ; but if there is some glitch or I get too busy, I have prepared two other bulletins for this column space. For most of our group, this will be their very first trip to the Holy Land; for me, it is my 10th trip (I ve only been to one other country more often: Italy!) However, my last trip was 15 years ago, when I lived in Israel for six months on a sabbatical. I m sure that things have changed somewhat in the last fifteen years, but there s something very special about the Holy Land that is timeless. Christian pilgrims have been going there for centuries. Our particular pilgrimage is designed to follow as chronologically as possible the life of Jesus. Here are the details of the five times: 1. First few days: our Jewish Days will be visiting Yad Vashem (the Israeli Holocaust Museum and Memorial), the Dead Sea, Masada (the place where 960 Jews committed mass suicide rather than be killed by the Roman military about the year 73 A.D.), Qumran (where Jewish hermits lived in the caves; also the site of the finding of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls ), and the Wailing or Western Wall (the only structure still standing from the Jerusalem Temple which was destroyed in 70 A.D. the Temple Jesus visited). By Sarah Glanister When I went to Jamaica, I had no idea what to expect. I had never been on a mission trip and I had never been to Jamaica. However, when I left, every ounce of fear or uncertainty I had felt had been replaced with nothing but love. In Jerusalem! (a community of Mustard Seed), there is a community of children living with the HIV/AIDs virus called Martha s House. After lunch one day, we went to go visit the children and play with them. It was so easy to see God in them. They didn't care about how dirty we were from working all morning, or if our hair had been washed in the past day or about our weight or age or opinions. Every flaw we saw in ourselves disappeared in their eyes and the love they gave us was overwhelming. I feel like the children showed me the very definition of unconditional love. They crawled all over us and played with our hair. Later, they piled onto a sofa to watch a movie and were overjoyed to learn my name in sign language. The love they gave was the most joyful form of love I've ever experienced. Now that I m home again I've made it a personal goal to be more loving and more open to the wonder of God. God bless all of the children in Martha s House! Lenten Retreat February 28, Then we will visit sites having to do with The Early Life of Jesus: Ein Karem (where Mary visited Elizabeth, the birthplace of John the Baptist), Bethlehem (Jesus birth place) and Nazareth. 3. Next will be the places at The Beginning of Jesus Ministry: Mount of Temptation and Baptismal Site, site of the Sermon on the Mount and Cana (site of Jesus first miracle). 4. Then there will many visits to places corresponding to Jesus Public Ministry: Sea of Galilee, Bethany (home of Martha and Mary and raising of Lazarus), Transfiguration Mount, Capernaum and Jacob s Well (where Jesus met the Samaritan women, and Jericho (where Jesus visited Zaccheus home). 5. Finally, we will end up our pilgrimage commemorating The Final Days of Jesus: Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Cenacle (the place of the Last Supper), Calvary (death and resurrection) and the Mount of the Ascension. We are due to arrive home on Wednesday, February 4 having been gone a total of 15 days. Special thanks to the priests who have presided at Daily Mass and this and next weekend. Be assured of our prayers at the holy sites that we will visit; likewise, we ask for your prayers for our safety and good experiences on this Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I won t be home for the Super Bowl; so I don t know how I will give my usual not so subtle prediction; perhaps I ll put it in a bulletin or or twitter. Yes, I do now have a twitter account; this will be my first time using it; I hope to twitter at least one photo a day with a small caption. Look for it you who are also twitter persons. 5 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. 7 Third Sunday in in Ordinary Time - - January 25, 25, Calling all knitters, crocheters, and wannabes! Holy Spirit has an active Prayer Shawl Ministry and would like to invite others to join. Begun with love, knitted and blessed with prayer, shawls are given to those in need or having a memorable celebratory event. The patterns are simple and easy to get into even if you ve never had knitting or crochet needles in your hands, or if it s been a long time since you ve crocheted or knitted. If you think you may be interested or would like more information, please contact Andrea McColeman, , or andrea.mccoleman@gmail.com Volunteers needed to bake bread for our weekend Masses Baking unleavened bread for our Masses is a very important and rewarding ministry. We will be losing several of our regular bakers and are in need of new volunteers. Training is provided and bakers are scheduled on a rotating basis. If you are interested in joining this ministry, or would like more information, please call Peg Scillia, Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. On FEBRUARY 7/8, at all the Masses, this Rite of Blessing will be done for mothers who are currently pregnant. The Rite will be conducted several times in the coming year. Page 7 We are beginning another training for CGS ( ) we have catechists that came from Christ the King to help this year, and are in need of people from Holy Spirit to take over the program. One of our catechists has been having medical issues and another is graduating nursing school. So we need people to fill spaces. We will teach you some early childhood education, we will teach you about your faith and also the Montessori Method. And in turn you can teach those young ones we say I do to at Baptism. If you are a catechist for Lennie or Louie this may help assist you in those classes too. If you need Confirmation hours this is perfect. If you are a Catholic parent this can assist you in teaching and passing on your faith to your child. The class schedule is: February 6-8 March April May 1-3 Sept October 2-4 Friday s 6:00-8:30pm Saturday s 9:30-3:30 Sunday s 10:00-4:30 The Walls of Jerusalem Holy Spirit has already paid for the books we will use. Teresa Chisholm chisholm.tm@cox.net Help needed to launder linens used for our weekend liturgies We are looking for at least two people (or more!) who would be willing to pick up the soiled linens used at Mass, launder and iron them, and return them to the office before the next weekend. They usually consist of the corporals (small cloths that go on top of the altar cloth) and the purificators (used to wipe the cup), small white towels, baptism towels, and occasionally, the altar cloth or the white albs used by Fr. Bill and our deacons. Right now, three people have been handling this ministry, but they could use some help! If we had five people, the rotation would be less than once a month. There is a small training involved. If you have some extra time once a month or so and would like more info, please call the office and give us your name and phone number: Thank you!
