Not so with today s Gospel, a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Here we have Jesus well-known sayings about God s care for us. No one can serve two masters and Look at the birds in the sky have become idioms in our culture. Perhaps they have become too familiar. Jesus point is a simple one if we keep our hearts set on the important things, God will take care of the rest. His use of simple images from nature birds, flowers, grass would have resonated just as deeply with his listeners then as they do today. The brief passage from Isaiah, situated as it is in a longer section on the restoration of Zion, uses a wonderful feminine image to portray God s care for us. Even more than a mother s care for her own child is God s attentiveness to our needs. Juxtaposed with the Gospel reading, an image of God as doting parent surfaces. No wonder St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians is more confident in the judgment of the Lord than in any human assessment! Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 6: Contact Len Urso, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. Registration packets are available in the office or at Mass. First Communion is a two-year program, beginning as early as first grade. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. Would LOVE to find someone for 12 noon :-) NOW it'd be awesome to add BASS and/or GUITAR! We are blessed to have guitar AND bass at 10 am (Ron, John and Sal do a great job!), every other noon Mass (thanks to Sal!) and Louie and the band once a month at 5pm, but I wonder if there are any other players out there who might be willing to help, maybe every other weekend at the Mass you normally attend? Please call me or come up at Mass; I'd love to hear from you! I can provide you with music/ lead sheets and I'll try to work with your schedule to arrange rehearsal times! I just think a fuller sound encourages US to sing together more fully, so I would WELCOME more help! (OF course, pianists/accompanists would be another prayer answered!) Think about sharing your musical gifts with the community! I would be remiss not to mention the wonderful solo instrumentalists we enjoy too - Rebekah, Emily, Lucy, Sue, Jennifer and Maddie - and a few others who'll be joining us for Triduum and Easter! I feel so blessed by the amazing and dedicated musicians AND singers we have here at Holy Spirit - and of course, YOU, our singing assembly! What a song we share!" 4 It may be tempting to say: I can t believe that Lent is here already! -- with Ash Wednesday on March 5 of this week. But that doesn t really make sense as this is almost as late as Ash Wednesday could possibly be! The very latest possible Ash Wednesday date is March 10 (and the earliest is February 4). Of course, Ash Wednesday is determined by the moveable feast of Easter Sunday: and, then, Ash Wednesday, is 46 days earlier. The formula for determining the date of Easter is: THE FIRST SUNDAY AF- TER THE FIRST FULL MOON AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING. Thus, this year: Spring begins at 9:57 p.m. on Thursday, March 20; since there will have been a full moon four days earlier on March 16, the next full moon won t be until Tuesday, April 15; and the next Sunday after that full moon will be April 20: EASTER days before April 20 is March 5: ASH WEDNESDAY So, if Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter, how do we get 40 days of Lent? Check out this calendar: March 5-8: PRE-LENT (Ash Wednesday to Saturday) March 9 - April 17 a.m. : LENT -- exactly 40 days! April 17 p.m. - April 19: TRIDUUM April 20: EASTER SUNDAY We have four Masses for Ash Wednesday: 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. in the Trailer on our property at Russell and Mesa Park and 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym at Bishop Gorman High School. The Trailer is very small and most likely Standing Room Only ; so if you can attend one of the evening Masses in the Auxiliary Gym, you might be more comfortable there, but it too will be very crowded: so arrive early at either place. RULES FOR FAST & ABSTINENCE DURING LENT: Fasting: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 (in good health) are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means: ONLY one full meal; some food (not equaling another full meal) can be taken at breakfast and around midday or in the evening -- depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal; in other words: ONE FULL MEAL, two smaller meals which combined do not equal the full meal and no in-between snacks Abstinence: ALL Catholics 14 years old and older (in good health) must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent -- including, of course, Good Friday. The collection on Ash Wednesday at ALL four Masses will be for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada; see Bishop Pepe s column on page 5. Please be generous. 5 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On March 5, 2014 we begin our Forty Days of Lent. For some, it is a time of reflection and prayer. Others may donate to charity in the tradition of almsgiving. For many though, the tradition of fasting is the chosen means of honoring their faith. Though the paths we take through the Lenten season may differ, we all embark on the same spiritual journey and we all share in the same goal; to reaffirm our commitment to Christ and to our fellow man. In reaffirming these commitments, I am reminded of a passage by the prophet Isaiah, who said that true fasting is, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless: clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own Is 58:6-7. We should consider then that fasting is not just a physical act, but a spiritual one. It is the emptying of sin in our hearts and of moral weakness in our minds. It is a baptismal renewal achieved through the giving of ourselves to God and to each other. Only by passing through this emptiness do we become spiritually full again. When we observe someone who is suffering or in need, we should remember that the person we are looking at is not really a stranger. As we all are sown from the same seed, what we are seeing is ourselves but with a different face. We are witnessing a manifestation of Christ in another form. So when we see those who are hungry and homeless, we should not turn our back. We should recognize, as Isaiah wisely states, that these are our own. In keeping with that wisdom, I ask you to include Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada as part of your Lenten Observance. If you pray, please pray for all those Catholic Charities humbly serves. If you fast, please consider donating your unused food to their food pantry. If you give alms, please remember the Annual Ash Wednesday Collection is a wonderful opportunity to assist in the work of our Church for our brothers and sisters in need. This manifestation of God s love for all people is made possible by your devotion and generosity. Your kindness creates the daily miracles that allow the most vulnerable among us to see the face of Christ. I pray that this Lent, in your own way, you will all serve as shepherds to guide those in need into the Paschal mysteries we celebrate at Easter and God s divine light. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. Those who are bound by this fasting observance may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Both of these observances are only for those in good health; those are exempt who must maintain dietary standards that would be compromised by observing such abstinence or fasting.
