2 Happy Lent! Lent began last Wednesday -- Ash Wednesday. For many of us, giving up something for Lent has been our tradition. We have given up such things as candy, desserts, sweets, cigarettes, alcohol, our favorite TV show or something similar. If we actually give up these things for the full season of Lent, it proves that we have stamina and strong will power, but does it make us any holier? I m not sure! As always, I suggest that you give up things that are truly un-christian -- like cussing, swearing, laziness, mean-spiritedness, anger, pride, lust or any other such immoral or unbecoming behavior. If you succeed in even minimizing these actions, I guarantee you will be a holier person by Easter Sunday. Of course, when we give up the things in the first list, we usually go back to enjoying them on Easter: candy, our favorite TV show, etc. But, it would be absurd to give up those items in the second list and return to them on Easter: cussing, lust etc; giving these things us should be the beginning of a life change and it most likely will not be fully accomplished in one Lent of 40 days. We may still need to work on it. You see, Lent is our annual spiritual check-up and each Lent we may need to continue to work on last year s project. It s like your annual dental or physical check-up. Just as your dentist will tell you each year to continue flossing or using a good mouthwash or your doctor may advise you to continue to watch your calorie intake or exercise more regularly, each year we may keep working on some of our lifelong faults. Once we have conquered one troublesome area in our lives, then the next Lent we can start on something else. Try it; don t worry that Lent has already started; anything you do good for Lent is good -- whether you work on it for 40 days or only 4. As we celebrate Jesus resurrection to new life on Easter, may this Easter find us in our new life : that is, a more Christ-like person than when we began this special season. In the Gospel for Ash Wednesday, we were given the three disciplines of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Here are some practical suggestions for following these Lenten disciplines: Prayer Set aside time each day (even just 10 minutes) for your own personal prayer: rosary, novenas, devotions Go to Mass during the week or visit the Eucharistic chapel. Attend Taize Prayer on Thursday, March 28 and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday, April 4. Fasting Observe meatless Fridays even if you don t have to because of age or health. Fast from gossip, laziness, jealousy, etc. Give up some of your time to volunteer service. Almsgiving Give generously to our Lenten Catholic Charities campaign. Give away some clothes you don t need to those who do. Bring food, more food, to the weekend Mass you attend. Page 2 ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God s] presence (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. TODAY S READINGS First Reading God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the desert for forty days (Luke 4:1-13). The Rite of Election Ceremony This Sunday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church March 10, 2019 at 2:30 PM How strange this title sounds to us! While many of us would probably agree that our national, state and local elections are rituals of a special breed, we hardly expect to find a rite of election in church. But long before any of our ancestors thought of electing their leaders, God was electing a people, selecting Israel, a rag-tag clan in a tiny corner of the earth, to be special, holy, a chosen people. God did not choose them because they were noteworthy in any way; they were not powerful, strong or particularly clever. But once they were chosen, they were God s forever. Even when they strayed, looking to other gods for hope or help, God clung to them fiercely, calling them back again and again when anyone else would have gladly let them go. It is the same with us. God chooses us, elects us, in Christ, to be a holy people, to be a church, to be signs of the reign of God on earth. The catechumens who have been preparing for baptism and those who have been working with them for months and years believe that God has chosen them to be one of us, the baptized. At the Rite of Election, their godparents, sponsors, catechists, pastors and friends will testify before the bishop, or his delegate, that God has chosen these people. They will offer the evidence of their lives among us, hearing and following God s word, praying with God s people and taking part in the work and the communal life of God s church. After listening to this testimony, the bishop will declare that they are elected for baptism, chosen to be God s own in Chris Jesus - not because they earned it, but because God wants it. And that is election by a landslide! Copyright 1997 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL ; Page 4:

Beyond the meals, caring and compassionate delivery drivers also make wellness check-ups and deliver donated pet food for those with pets. The all-in cost for Catholic Charities to provide this service is under $7.00, and due to a shortage in funding, the waitlist for Meals on Wheels averages between seniors any given day waiting to be able to receive meals. 9 LENTEN Events Happening in March & April EASTER ALMSGIVNG OPPORTUNITY Holy Spirit Outreach Ministry Community of Salt and Light would like to invite everyone to participate in an Easter Almsgiving project to benefit children in need in our community. OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE 350 CHILDREN WITH A SPECIAL EASTER TREAT This year, instead of Easter baskets, we would like to provide every child with an Easter stuffed animal, such as a bunny, chick, etc. Along with that adorable animal, we would like to attach a festive cellophane bag filled with candy. After they have enjoyed their candy, they will have a special pal to keep as their very own. Here is the plan, we have asked our SOAR Religious Education students (pre-k-5th grade) to bring in a NEW stuffed Easter animal, at least 10 tall when sitting (ears don t count!). We would also like to invite you to do the same as well as provide us with much needed candy. We will fill the 350 bags we have already prepared with stickers wishing them a Blessed Easter from our Holy S p i r i t family. We will then attach them to the animals before being delivered to 8 agencies in our community. Our needs are as follows: Individually wrapped chocolate candy Individually wrapped non-chocolate candy Due by March NEW Stuffed Easter animal at least 10 tall when sitting (ears don t count!) 16/17 & 30/31 Collection dates: March 16/17 through March 30/31.
