OFFICE HOURS Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm. SHARING OUR GIFTS Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week's scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

4 A happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I am grateful for so many things, but most of all for my family, my friends and this beautiful community of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Here s a Thanksgiving Prayer that you might want to use. And, I ve also added a Thanksgiving cartoon. Thanksgiving Table Prayer Lord God, our hearts are crowded with gratitude as we celebrate the feast of Thanksgiving. We have come to this our feasting table with great joy and eagerness, for we are truly grateful to you, our God, for all that we have been given. We pause now to thank You for the great generosity of your gifts. (Pause and let each person mention something or someone for which that person is grateful.) We also thank one another for gifts especially for the gifts of love and affection that we have freely shared. We are thankful for all who are present at this our feast as well as for all those who have labored in love in order to bring this dinner to our table. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players Nov. 21 (Tuesday only) ST. FRANCIS - -The Reformer: Rebuild my church! That s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis and it s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the foundations of true and lasting reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints. (The Thursday session was presented on Oct. 5th.) CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. Each Class will be offered twice per week on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 8:00 pm and on Thursday mornings after daily Mass from 8:15 9:45 am in the Gathering Place. Mark your calendars now for our ANNUAL CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT & FAMILY CHRISTMAS PARTY! May You, our God, bless this Thanksgiving feast and all of us who shall share it in your holy name. Amen. 5 2017 HOLY SPIRIT ANGEL TREE This weekend, at all the Masses, there are four Christmas trees filled with Angels representing six agencies/programs in our community. The following is a list of the agencies, their Angel color and their mission: GREEN - Casa de Luz is a community resource center located in the Las Vegas neighborhood known as the Naked City. They have asked for individual toys and gift cards for children. PINK The R.O.S.E. Foundation provides supportive services for families in the community by providing emergency food assistance, back to school and holiday support, tutorials and many other programs to help them reach self-sufficiency. They have asked for toys for the children. There are also little red stockings for donations or cash or check (payable to Holy Spirit). These donations will enable the Foundation to assist the families with emergencies that arise as they strive to reach their full potential. YELLOW - Children s Heart Foundation, founded in 2001, is making a difference in the lives of heart families right here in Nevada through emotional, educational and financial support. They have asked for toys for boys and girls, and gift cards to help their families. The little red stockings are for donations of cash or checks (payable to Holy Spirit). These donations will enable the Foundation to assist with much needed medications, medical supplies, etc. BLUE - Family Promise s mission is to offer homeless families the opportunity to achieve housing stability by providing short term shelter, meals, case management and hospitality. They are asking for toys for boys and girls and gift cards for their teenagers. ORANGE - Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada offers a wide range of programs for those in need from infants to seniors, regardless of race, religion or creed. They are asking for toys for boys and girls and gift cards for their teenagers. ORANGE - Catholic Charities Resident Empowerment Program offers a structured environment for homeless men who want to gain self-sufficiency through employment. They are asking for much needed new underwear and socks. Their greatest need is for sizes medium and large. WHITE - Catholic Worker is grounded in works of mercy for people in need in our community. They have asked for stockings containing stocking stuffers and gift cards for their children as the families do not have many options for transportation to pick up gifts. Stockings will be provided. Please consider taking an Angel this weekend and making a difference for someone this Christmas. We do ask that all gifts be NEW as most of these families rarely receive anything new. 8 Witnessing the different lifestyles of the Jamaican people my age was probably the most eye-opening experience for me. These kids may not talk like us, look like us, dress like us, etc., but we are all so much alike. That s what brought me to tears at night. Thousands of miles and an ocean separate our different lifestyles, yet Anthony and I connected and laughed with the Jerusalem boys over TV shows, video games, music, you name it. And it really drove the point home that we are all brothers and sisters. Why waste time pointing out the differences in each other when we are all so much more similar in ways we never thought of? It was this phenomenon and another experience that made me love Jamaica. The people in that country are content with just being. It seems like life isn t a competition or a race for them. From what I ve seen, they don t judge people on appearance or by their possessions. This is drastically different from America. The leading disease for adults in the United States is depression. Yet, the quality of life for so many people I ve seen in Jamaica was drastically less than those of most of America s population. And, to even drive the point home further, simple bystanders I ve seen in Jamaica were much more content with life than adults I ve seen in America. They enjoy and get so much more out of life even though they have so much less. What a paradox. Now that I m on my own in school, it can be easy to let your mind wander to a negative place. But I always have pictures of the family I made in Jamaica in my dorm. And I wear a necklace I got from Kingston everyday. These remind me everyday to live like the family that I ve made lives. They remind me to look at each day as a blessing and to be thankful every morning. There are plenty of people my age who look around at the world in a pessimistic way. But, from what I have seen, there s so much more to be thankful for than to complain about. The Jamaican people welcomed us like family, and at the end of the mission trip, it did indeed feel like I formed a new family in a place far away.
