Numbers reminds us that we are blessed. We are looked upon with kindness and grace. The psalm and Galatians remind us of the blessings given through God s Son. Luke tells of our ultimate blessing, that Mary, a human being like us, gave birth to a child who is God s Son. Mary, a young mother, watches all that is happening around the birth of her son. She listens as the shepherds bring messages from angels, a message she also received from an angel, about her son. Yet Mary remains silent. She keeps all this news about her son to herself. She reflects on all these experiences. The only thing she shares is the name of her son, Jesus, a name given him before he was even conceived. Her silence leaves us wondering if this is how one responds to such a great blessing. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27). Psalm May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67). Second Reading God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, Abba, Father! So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7). Gospel The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21). Page 3 Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on January 7/8.

4 Mary, The Holy Mother of God - January 1, 2017 Happy New Year! Here are some Catholic New Year s Resolutions for you to consider: (Don t try to all of them: only one or two!) Practice gratitude Cultivating a grateful heart is the hallmark of a Christian person. Every day, express thankfulness to God and to others. Seeing the good in your life will allow you to keep your heart compassionate and loving. Encounter the Lord each day Find time to be with the Lord each day, whether it be for an hour or ten minutes. Have a conversation with the Lord. Give your joys and worries to Jesus. Allow God's love to transform them. Our encounters will keep our eyes and ears open to the presence of Christ in our midst. Be present to others There is much celebration and mourning, joy and sorrow in peoples' lives. What a blessing it is to be able to share those times and not let others experience them alone. The gift of your presence to others is much more valuable than you realize. Resist overwork There is a pressure to produce, meet goals, be successful. But activities that lead us to overwork, constant fatigue and worry do not give glory to God. What God calls us to do we can do well. Be mindful that life requires balance, down time and letting go of unrealistic goals. Nurture friendships Our friends are those we choose to be with, those with whom we spend our evenings, with whom we vacation, to whom we go to for advice. Friends are gifts from God who give us a greater appreciation of God's love for us. Friends need our time and love. Give more Good stewards realize that everything they have is entrusted to them as gift to be shared. There is no better place to begin than sharing with the community that gathers around the Lord's table at Mass. Consider what you are giving to Holy Spirit and the Capital Campaign and commit to give to these an even greater contribution as circumstances allow. Make a difference in Holy Spirit Catholic Community Believe it or not, Holy Spirit Church can use your talents. Offering your talents to this parish community is one of the most effective ways to feel useful and connected to others, and it is a potentially life-changing New Year's resolution. Consider living more simply We cannot find fulfillment in possessions. They add nothing to our self-worth. Jesus blessed the "poor in spirit" in his Sermon on the Mount; and Saint Francis of Assisi urged us to live with only what was necessary, for that is how we begin to find God more easily and truly. Get healthy Studies show that most people in North America are accelerating their own decline into premature old age, owing to poor diet and lack of physical activity. Be a good steward of your body. Plan a complete overhaul of your diet and exercise habits. Don't give up People give up their New Year's resolutions because of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations. So take it slow, be kind to yourself and keep trying. Resist the urge to throw your hands up and quit. You succeed through small, manageable changes over time. Turn to the Lord Ask the Lord for guidance, strength and perseverance in achieving your resolutions. In his letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul writes: "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength" (Phil 4:13). If God is the center of our New Year's resolutions, they have a better chance for success. Happy New Year to all! NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an inservice offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 4

6 Faith Formation Classes 2016 / 2017 Pre-K 5th Grade Happy New Year Classes start back this coming week. Please check the updated class schedules available online at The "King Cake" takes its name from the Biblical Kings. In Catholic liturgical tradition, the Solemnity of Epiphany commemorated on January 6 celebrates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. The Eve of Epiphany (the night of January 5) is popularly known as Twelfth Night (the Twelve Days of Christmas are counted from Christmas Eve until this night). The season for King Cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), up until Mardi Gras, "Fat Tuesday," or Shrove Tuesday; the day before the start of Lent. What started out roughly 300 years ago as a dry French bread type dough with sugar on top and a bean inside now comes in many varieties depending on the country. Some king cakes are made with a puff pastry, filled with one of several fillings (e.g., almond, apple, chocolate/pear, etc.), and have a small figurine hidden inside. Some king cakes are made of a sweet brioche dough in the shape of a hollow circle with a glazed topping sprinkled with colored sugar. The cake often has a small plastic baby (to represent the Baby Jesus) inside or underneath; and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket receives various privileges or a prize. I have adapted this tradition to make it a little more child friendly (losing the choking hazard of the plastic toy). Before the children return to school in a couple of days, why not start a new family tradition baking King Cake Cupcakes together. King Cake Cupcake Recipe (makes 12 cupcakes ) Ingredients 1 stick unsalted butter, softened 1 cup white sugar 2 eggs, room temperature and beaten prior to adding 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 cup cake flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 1 can vanilla frosting (or you can make your own) 1 cup sugar crystals, divided into thirds Green, yellow and purple food coloring Instructions for Making King Cake Cupcakes 1. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. 3. Fold the flour mixture into the creamed butter alternating with the milk. 4. Use an electric mixer to whip the batter for 2-3 minutes. 5. Line a cupcake tin with muffin papers or silicone muffin cups. 6. Fill the muffin papers or cups halfway with batter and gently tap pan or cup on the counter to remove air bubbles. 7. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. 8. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting. Making Colored Sugar for King Cake Cupcakes 1. Take 3 small dishes and add a few drops of food coloring in each dish. 2. Mix the crystals in, coating completely. 3. Pour the crystals out onto a paper towel or plate and wait for them to dry. 4. Pepe invites all parishioners of the Diocese of Las Vegas to attend the diaconate ordinations of Brother Jose Unlayao and Brother Luis Nguyen Van Dam, on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2017, 5:30 p.m. at the Guardian Angel Cathedral. Brothers Luis and Jose are members of the religious community of the Canons Regular of Jesus the Lord, founded and based in Vladivostok, Russia. Please also join us for the reception in Anderson Hall following the Mass to congratulate Brothers Luis and Jose. GUARDIAN ANGEL CATHEDRAL UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR LITURGICAL MINISTERS In an effort to promote a sense of community and belonging among all Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Las Vegas, we would like to extend an invitation to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ushers, and adult Altar Servers, to serve at the Cathedral on one weekend, at one Mass each month. Ministering at the Cathedral is an opportunity to experience the Universal Church, considering ninety-five percent of those attending Mass are visitors from around the world. It is also an opportunity to become better acquainted with your Cathedral. The Guardian Angel Cathedral is the Bishop s church. It s where he ordains new priests and deacons, administers the Sacraments, celebrates the Sacred Triduum and Holy Days throughout the Liturgical Year. Other liturgies celebrated at the Cathedral are the Mass of Sending Forth for Seminarians, the White Mass for Catholic Physicians, the Red Mass for Catholic Attorneys, and various Masses for active ministries within the diocese. Please prayerfully consider taking advantage of this opportunity to serve the Church and the People of God. For more information please contact Joseph von Hazmburg at the Guardian Angel Cathedral office at (702) or adminassist@gaclv.org. Food for the Poor Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are most appreciated: Peanut butter, jelly, canned meats, tuna, cereals (hot and cold), rice, beans, etc. Page 8
