Psalm I will rise and go to my father (Psalm 51). Second Reading Paul expresses his gratitude for being appointed to the ministry (1 Timothy 1:12-17). Gospel There is great rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents (Luke 15:1-32 [1-10]). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12 Noon pm RECONCILIATION True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing. When two people meet heart to heart and work through old hurts, misunderstandings, and careless words, cleansing tears often flow and the encounter ends with an embrace that fills both with the warmth of a love too strong to fade. The readings this weekend assure us of this healthy release that comes with reconciliation. They give us the courage to reach out to someone with whom we need to reconcile ourselves, and give us the courage to ask for forgiveness from God, too. In the reading from Exodus, we see how God refuses again and again to give up on the Israelites. Even though they grow impatient with God and turn to false idols, God still calls them back. Luke s Gospel assures us that God rejoices when we turn away from sin. Paul s letter to Timothy encourages us, like Paul, to look back on our lives and recognize where God s patient mercy has been shown to us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

4 Today, marks the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 (2001) attack on the United States of America. All of us remember where we were and what we were doing when we first heard the news. The images, the pain, the loss, the anger and so many other sights and sounds, emotions and feelings still haunt us. I found this (anonymous) prayer on line. Lord of Mercy, Prince of Peace. This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. This day does not pass in the calendar without our remembering. We remember images of death and destruction. Images that human eyes were never meant to see. We remember words our ears were never meant to hear, the tender last words of husbands and wives who would never embrace again. We imagine the feeling of emptiness in the arms of children who at the end of the day could not find mom or dad for their welcome home hug. We remember our own feelings of emptiness as our sense of security, as our own confidence in the predictable order of life and work was radically shaken. This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. We remember the heroism of the many that lost their lives in saving others. We remember all those who suffered and died, we grieve for them still, friends and strangers alike, along with their families and friends. This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. And it is right that it should not pass from our memory. But today and in this prayer, along with our remembrance of profound loss, it also seems right that we give voice to our deep longing for peace, and with this prayer, commit ourselves to those actions that will draw us closer to our most ancient and most holy desire, peace among all God s children. Lord, grant us peace. Amen. Outreach Ministry - Community of Salt & Light 10/15/16 Family Promise honors Fr. 5 I am very thankful that I had the opportunity of being a missionary in Kingston, Jamaica to serve the residents and their caregivers (aunties) of the Mustard Seed Communities. Despite the heat, humidity, no air conditioning, and cold showers, I received so many gifts. I saw beautiful green trees and mountains, pretty flowers, and a splendid beach. I witnessed a starry night unfolding at one of the Mustard Seed locations that was spectacular. The most memorable gifts that I received were with the residents, the missionaries, and the aunties. Our main home for the week was Sophie's Place. Most of the residents are severely disabled. Most can't speak, some are visually impaired, and all but a few are wheelchair bound and have been orphaned or abandoned. It was difficult at times to see them in their condition, unable to do anything for themselves. Yet, despite their condition, they exhibited love to their aunties, to each other, and to us missionaries. There are so many stories to tell about the residents but here are a few. I can still see the picture in my mind of Noella, one of the residents, giving Gloria, one of our missionaries whom she bonded with, the most beautiful smile and sound when she entered the room to feed her. Or Donovan, a very troubled young man who has bouts of anger and violence, during a church service, running over to another resident when he sneezed, wiping his nose, and then going back to his pew and singing his heart out. I saw my fellow missionaries giving love. It is hard to feed some of the residents but the missionaries were patient. When one missionary struggled, another gave support. I witnessed Ninga, holding Mikayla and singing sweet lullabies to her every day. I saw beautiful, authentic smiles of the missionaries, especially the teenagers, as they fed, held or played with the residents. How can I forget Deacon Dan getting his hair done and making a resident named Tiara, exclaim "Oh, my goodness!" or Deacon John playing hide-andseek with Chrisagaye, or Father Bill playing with Donovan or helping with the mechanics of a go cart. I could go on and on about the other missionaries. I was amazed at the aunties who worked tirelessly to care for the residents. They showed so much patience and love to the residents and gratitude to us for helping them. They don't just care for the residents; they play with them, pray with them, and sing to them as if the residents were family. One day we visited one of the Mustard Seed locations that housed HIV residents. There were no barriers. We were young and old alike laughing, playing games and eating ice cream. When we went to a few other Mustard Seed locations, we worked hard on projects. Not one missionary complained. It was a lot of fun and very rewarding, despite a few mishaps along the way. Perhaps the most profound gifts that I received were when we were all together for prayer. No matter what location we were at, during a prayer service or at Mass, we were all one community loving and worshiping God. The residents and aunties showed tremendous joy during the songs. Some were singing, some were smiling, and some were dancing in their own way. At Jacob's Ladder, a facility that houses mostly Page 5 mobile residents with disabilities, I witnessed singing and praise by one resident who was wheelchair bound and another resident who was pretty silent until the end of Mass, that was unforgettable. Also, each night the missionaries got together for reflection. We prayed and talked about our day and what touched us. The depth of sharing, especially from the teenagers, was awesome. I came back to Las Vegas with a spirit of gratitude for all that I have: a home, family and friends who love me, and my physical and mental abilities. I will never forget the residents who let me love them and who showed me love nor the aunties, workers, and the Mustard Seed team who took us everywhere. I will hold a special place in my heart for my fellow missionaries, especially John and Katie for their kindness and patience. I can't wait for the next mission trip to Go.Be.Love! LINDA SMITH

8 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time - - September 11, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Diocese of Las Vegas annual second collection for Seminary and Clergy Education and Development takes place on the weekend of September 17 th and 18 th. This collection supplements the ongoing education of our priests and the cost of medical care if they were to become ill, disabled or develop special health needs. This collection also helps offset the cost of tuition, housing and the education of our seminarians. Our diocese is blessed to have priests who have given so generously of their lives to the service of the Church and its people. They celebrate Mass on Sundays and during the week, hear confessions, anoint the sick, baptize, celebrate marriages, and pray for the dead. Our priests preach the Word of God from the pulpit and teach it in classroom settings. They also listen to their people s joys and sorrows and promote works of charity. We are also very blessed to have six men studying for the priesthood. At Mount Angel Seminary in Saint Benedict, Oregon, Second Year Pre-Theology, Mauricio Espino, Third Year Theology, Felipe Jimenez, Second Year Philosophy, Nicholas Cipriano, First Year Pre-Theology, Edmund Finley and First Year Theology, Rogelio Molina. Studying at Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, Third Year Theology, Miguel Corral. Two men, members of the religious community of Canons Regular of Jesus the Lord have recently joined our diocese, Brother Jose Unlayao is assigned to St. Anne and Brother Luis Van Dam is assigned to St. Joseph Husband of Mary. Both Brother Jose and Brother Luis have completed their formal theological studies. I appreciate your generous support of this collection, and of the priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Las Vegas. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 8
