Gospel Jesus professes that he is the living bread and whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6:41-51). The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

4 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 9, 2015 Recently, someone sent me an article entitled 10 Things You Might be Doing Wrong at Mass. Of the ten, I thought that two of them were particularly relevant to our situation here at Holy Spirit. I will put the quote from the article in italics and then my own observations in bold print. It seems that these two weren t always a problem here at Holy Spirit, but have been slowly evolving over the years. Here they are, read them, see if they apply to you and try to change these sloppy habits: 1. Arriving Late: I know what the problem is, somebody told you that if you arrived by X and left after X, then you officially went to Mass and fulfilled your obligation. On the contrary, my friend! There are no such limits. Our obligation is to attend a Sunday Mass, and that Mass begins and ends with the introductory rites and the concluding rites. If you happen to be late because of circumstances beyond your control, if you made an honest effort to be there on time, but you walked in at the Psalm, so be it; you re fine. But if you had to catch the last 7 minutes of a game, and that s why you re late, then stop reading this and re-prioritize. I will NEVER embarrass anyone whom I see arriving late, because there are legitimate excuses; BUT I see the same people LATE EVERY SUNDAY (or Saturday!). All Masses seem to have this problem, but the 12:30 and 5:00 p.m. Masses on Sunday are the worst! Often at the Start Time of Mass, the cafeteria is only half full, but by 15 minutes into the Mass, it is FULL! I try to start Mass at the EXACT time listed on the dot with music practice beginning 5 minutes before Mass Start Time. So, why not leave home 5 or 10 minutes earlier? Your late arrival is really distracting to everyone there including me and other priest presiders! 2. Leaving before the Mass is over: AKA the Judas Shuffle. I m sorry, did you think Mass was over as soon as you received the Eucharist? It s as though some people think the proper response when receiving Holy Communion isn t Amen, but Goodbye. We should observe proper decorum for Mass: depart after the celebrant. I was taught as a child that to leave Mass BEFORE the priest was just plain RUDE! I still think that that s true. I don t know why people HAVE TO LEAVE so early! Again, I would NEVER embarrass anyone by calling attention to their leaving early, because there may be a legitimate reason for doing so; BUT not EVERY SUNDAY (or Saturday). What s the rush? If you leave right after Communion, you re treating the Eucharist as kind of a fast food or drive through service. How disrespectful! I heard of one church that put up a sign at the EXIT door: Judas also left early! And, again, your leaving early is very distracting to everyone there including me and other priest presiders! So, please look at these sloppy habits and try to make the necessary changes in your TIME spent at Mass. Cannot Holy Spirit have a good reputation of ALL the people attending the FULL MASS? Page 4 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Next meetings: August 11 & August 25 (call for location) Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram

7 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - - August 9, 9, 2015 My Dear Parishioners, On the weekend of August 16 our second collection focuses on our rural parishes and missions in our diocese. On the weekend of August 16 the Diocese of Las Vegas will take up a collection to benefit our rural parishes and missions. This collection is used to help sustain rural parishes and missions that could not otherwise remain open. Many of these parishes are long distances from the next neighboring parish and serve populations that are small and therefore unable to maintain ministries and buildings completely on their own. These communities may be very small in population, but the parishioners, although small in numbers, are a beacon to their fellow citizens of their Catholic faith. It is not possible for these churches to meet the increasing financial burdens of upkeep of buildings, utilities and parish activities. They depend on us to assist them in their religious education programs and evangelization programs. Without this assistance, these missions and rural parishes would cease to be a Catholic presence in their communities. I ask for your assistance in helping to keep our rural Catholic communities alive by giving generously to this local need. Wishing you the very best, I remain Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are most appreciated. When you grocery shop, buy an extra staple item such as peanut butter, jelly, cereals, tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, etc. and leave it in you car to bring with you to Mass. Thank you! Page 7 Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas
