She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church s greatest scholars. Today s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke s Gospel, tells his disciples to ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. Copyright J. Page 3 Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on August 13/14.

4 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 24, 2016 It s great to be back from our 13-day trip to Peru; we were a group of five: Katie and Deacon John Breeden, our architect, Jim Van Compernolle and his wife, Krista Knapp, and myself. Our trip was split up into two parts: 1) a visit to Cusco, site of many Incan ruins, and Machu Picchu, the world-famous Incan town on the peak of a very high mountain; and 2) the visit to several small towns, north of Lima, where many of our new church s furnishings and art work are being made. The first part of the trip was truly amazing! I had not known much about the Incan civilization prior to this trip, but what an interesting people they must have been! Machu Picchu is truly spectacular: all these buildings, streets, terraced-farm areas are still standing five to six hundred years later! Cusco, the center of the Incan Empire, is actually a higher elevation than Machu Picchu: 11,152 feet above sea level versus 7,972 feet above sea level for Machu Picchu; fortunately, none of us had any real problems adjusting to the high altitude. However, as we climbed the last 1,000 feet to the top of the Machu Picchu site, I was breathing pretty hard! So, Machu Picchu is literally breathtaking and spiritually as well. The second part of the trip was our visit to several villages north of the city of Lima to see many of our furnishings and art work for our new church. Although I sent, via Facebook, many photos of these objects, photography of these beautiful works of art cannot do them justice. Several times, I was brought to tears (tears of joy) when I first gazed upon them. We will be so proud of these masterpieces when they adorn our new church building. It will take many more months (up to a year) to complete all of them and have them shipped along the Pacific coast of South America, Mexico and eventually up to southern California; and finally trucked to Las Vegas. In the meantime, we need to continue getting new pledges, honoring and making payments on the pledges we have made; and I need to make repeat and new contacts with potential major donors. We have taken a summer break from our campaign, Building God s House, our Home. As soon as possible, I will give an update on our progress and how we plan to wrap up the campaign: hopefully with great success so as to approach Bishop Joseph Pepe and the Diocese of Las Vegas Development and Financial boards to receive a loan (if necessary) and permission to go out to bid and begin construction. In the last several months, I was considering a group trip to Peru in January of 2017 (summertime, south of the equator), but I have decided that that is not a good plan: Peru is really, in many ways, a thirdworld country: horrible roads, not always a good supply of hot or even running water and many other inconveniences we encountered. Although Machu Picchu is simply amazing, only a few days are needed to see it and it s not for the faint of heart. My suggestion: if you really want to see Machu Picchu, work with a travel agent. The company I worked with for the Machu Picchu segment was Highland Adventures (just google the name; the company is based here in the U.S. in Florida) and it was truly wonderful; I highly recommend it. Lima is a big city, but traffic is utterly chaotic, nerve-wracking and reckless; for example, we had to get from the mission house of our Peruvian artists in Lima to the airport: a six-mile journey and it took us over 90 minutes! I just cannot see a large group maneuvering through Lima and much of Peru. In fact, I m not going to plan another long or out-of-the-country trip until either the church is built or, at least, under construction and well on it s way to completion. This must be my main focus! I ask for your prayers that those parishioners who have not yet pledged make a decision to do so; and prayers that my continued efforts to receive major donations be successful. Seeing all those beautiful furnishings and works of art in Peru has given me an even great incentive to move into God s House, our Home as soon as possible. Have a good week! Page 4 New Mass Times start August 7th! Beginning August 7th, the 8:00 a.m. Mass will change to 7:30 a.m., and the 10:00 a.m. Mass will change to 9:30 a.m.! Job Position Available Position: Weekend Mass Coordinator/Maintenance We are currently seeking to hire a new person to fulfill the job of Weekend Mass Coordinator/Maintenance. Austen Schaffer (one of our current Mass Coordinators) will be leaving for the military in September/October. This is a great job for a responsible high school teen or a college student. This is a part-time, hourly, paid position. General Qualifications: 18 Years of age or older (16 with work permit) Must be able to lift 50+ pounds Must be in physically good shape Organized and responsible Knowledge of Audio/Visual and live sound equipment (will train) Virtus Certified through the Protecting God s Children program in the Diocese of Las Vegas Reverent and humble in the presence of Catholic Worship Service Purpose: To serve Holy Spirit Catholic Church by preparing, setting up, and storing all supplies and materials needed for weekend liturgies. In addition to weekend liturgies, the Weekend Mass Coordinator is also responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of the parish office, Gathering Space and Upper Room. This position is required to work on all weekend Liturgies, Holy Days of Obligation, special liturgies, and holidays. Additional tasks may be required such as setting up and taking down for retreats, prayer services and other parish functions. Food for the Poor Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are most appreciated. When you grocery shop, buy an extra staple item such as peanut butter, jelly, cereals, tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, etc. and leave it in your car to bring with you to Mass.

5 My Mission I'm not sure these words will ever be able to express the absolute fulfillment and love I experienced while working in Jamaica. I know for a fact that what God opened my eyes to while I was in Jamaica is something I will never forget and something I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life. While I was there I had to privilege of waking up in the mornings and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through me. Most mornings were spent feeding the residents of Sophie's place. Most of the residents were handicapped either mentally and/or physically and it was the most humbling thing to know that I was serving them. I know because I humbled myself to that extent, I was able to open my heart to the Lord like I never had before. There was one moment in particular where I really felt the presence of the Lord and the Holy Spirit moving through me. During the last night there I had finished feeding one of the residents, his name is Phillip and he's one of the younger kids there. He's a little bit more difficult to feed, but for some reason that night I took him outside in his wheelchair and he was eating so well. I was just sitting in front of him and talking to him about how much I love him and how much he had taught me. I can't explain what happened to me, but I got this overwhelming feeling after he had finished eating--i just needed to stay with him a bit longer. The room was filled with the love of God and I grabbed this child's hand started spontaneously singing to him. He couldn't even hold onto my hand, but I held on tightly to his. I looked into his eyes and I saw God. I could see what He had been teaching me was true. He is in everyone and everyone does have a purpose. This child had the face of God on him and he taught me true love and that's something that I want to share with everyone I meet. I went to Jamaica with a mission to "GO.BE.LOVE" but after leaving I can say that that mission is one that I will live by. I will "GO.BE. LOVE." Page 5 Matthew Wickenhiser 2016 Missionary

6 Registration is Open for 2016 / 2017 Pre-K - 5th Grade The Registration packet for: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, K-5th Grade Regular Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation will be available on the welcome tables at each entrance to Mass throughout the summer. You can also download the registration packet, 2016 / 2017 schedules and program information from our parish website or come and visit the parish office during office hours. Students (including those who attended class this year) need to re-register for enrollment into the September 2016 May 2017 program. Volunteers Needed We are a growing parish and in order to offer our programs CGS, Kindergarten, 1st 5th Grade RE and our Sacramental Preparation program, we need at least 65 Catechists, Aides, Hall and Parking Monitors. Are you called to share your faith with Holy Spirit s young community and serve in one of these roles? You can be a Catechist or Classroom Aide if you: Love God, Love Children & Love to talk about Jesus, are baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith & are aged ! Full Training for the programs being taught next year will be offered. You can be a hall monitor or parking supervisor if you: are 16 + and willing to give 70 mins of your time every Sunday we have class. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Welcome to the Atrium Religious Education for 3-5 year olds Supposing, I said there was a planet without schools or teachers, where study was unknown, and yet the inhabitants - doing nothing but living and walking about - come to know all things. To carry in their minds the whole of learning; would you not think I was day dreaming? Well, just this, which seems so fanciful as to be nothing but the invention of a fertile imagination, is a reality. It is the child s way of learning. This is the path he follows. He learns everything without knowing he is learning it, and in doing so he passes little by little from the unconscious to the conscious, treading always in the paths of joy and love. 9 The Diocese of Las Vegas will be hosting a new formation program Pastoral Care with Loyola Marymount University from Los Angeles. This program is open to everyone whether as a volunteer interested in serving others, or on professional parish pastoral teams and other ministerial settings. Those who have already been active in pastoral ministry for some time will find that this program offers a refreshing perspective and source of continued growth.
