NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the little ones, : the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not important in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. Anyone who gives you a cup of water... because you belong to Christ... will surely not lose his reward (Mark 9:41). 4 First 26th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time September 3, , 2018 Cheers! We (a group of 35 persons, including myself -- mostly parishioners) had a wonderful time in Italy! These were the places in which we stayed: Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento; we also visited Spello (more about this little town later), Assisi, Vatican City, Capri, Naples and Pompeii; some of us took a one-day excursion down the Amalfi coast and saw that beautiful coastline (from both a bus and a boat!) and we visited the cities of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. We had so much fun, so many memories and ate lots of pasta and gelato, of course... and drank some vino too! People often ask what were the most special memories of a trip like this. My top three are these: 1. The morning of Wednesday, 12 September: we began the day with an 8:00 a.m. Mass in St. Peter s in Vatican City at the altar and tomb of St. John XXIII (whose relic is in our own altar here at Holy Spirit). St. Peter s Basilica is closed in the mornings on days on which there is a Papal Audience (like that day); so the entire Basilica was empty of people, except for us. It was so quiet and peaceful! From that Mass, we went directly into Piazza San Pietro (St. Peter s Square) for the Papal Audience with Pope Francis. Of course, there were thousands of people in the piazza, but we had wonderful seats -- pretty close to the front and near the aisle down which comes Pope Francis in the pope-mobile! He is so charismatic and friendly. A real blessing! 2. Spello is a little town less than 10 miles from Assisi. I had stayed there the first time when I went with Fr. Joe Annese and Fr. Bede Wevita to celebrate Fr. Joe s 50th Anniversary of Ordination; Spello had been recommended to us by Fr. Bob Stoeckig. Since that first time, I have returned several times. Well, I had arranged a lunch for our whole group just so they could see a typical small town in Italy and drink some of the best wine, taste some of the best olive oil and feast on delicious food from my friend, Roberto Angelini, owner of Enoteca Properzio restaurant. The experience exceeded my expectations! The family is so loving and friendly. Many say it was the best meal of our entire trip! And we ordered 12 cases of wine and/or olive oil -- which should arrive this week. I m working on the possibility of inviting Roberto and his family to Las Vegas in January to host an Italian Night -- with some of that great wine, olive oil and food. Stay tuned! 3. The all-day trip down the Amalfi Coast. The scenery is some of the best in the world: winding roads, steep cliffs, awesome views of the clear dark blue waters of the Mediterranean, the amazing villas of the rich and famous! I had presided at a wedding a few years ago in Ravello; so it was good to get back there and re-live those memories. Page 4 Viva Italia! Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. 5 First 26th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time September 3, , 2018 Going into Jamaica, I was at a really low point in my faith. My prayer life was nonexistent and my relationship with God was distant and lacking. It felt wrong for me to go on the mission trip whilst struggling in my faith and I worried that I wouldn t be able to give my all. I hoped and prayed that this trip would rekindle my faith and bring me back to God. And I think it s safe to say that s exactly what happened. Every resident, auntie, and Mustard Seed missionary I met impacted my life and faith in their own special way, but the one person who stood out the most to me was a resident named Javan. Javan is wheelchair bound and he cannot communicate like most of us, but he has a heart bigger than anyone I know. Every time he saw me he d give me a huge smile and would always hold my hand every time I talked to him. And when I had to leave, he d grab my shirt and wouldn t let me go until I sat back down with him. I could talk to him for hours and he d just sit there and listen with a smile on his face. His heart is so full of joy despite the challenges and hardships he faces every day. It broke me every time I thought about it. I asked God why Javan was put into his situation when he did nothing but love, and why I was blessed with my life when I ve done nothing to deserve it? Why was he in the wheelchair and I wasn t? It hurt me when I spent time with Javan and the other residents but at the same time, my heart grew. I never realized how much love I could have for others until I went to Jamaica. I went on the trip with the mindset that I was going to help those in need, but in the end, it was they who helped me. Even though many of them had nothing, they were rich in something else. Love. Each resident I met was a blessing in my life. They all had their own stories and I was lucky enough to get a little glimpse into their lives. I m so grateful that I got to experience this trip and I m so thankful to all of you who supported our mission team. It hurt to leave the residents of Sophie s Place but I realized that a part of me will always stay in Jamaica. This trip was an unforgettable experience and I am so excited to go again. 8 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation For All Losses 10/13-11/11 - Spreading the Warmth benefiting Casa de Luz, Catholic Worker and other agencies needing our assistance. Please consider donating NEW or gently used hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and blankets for children, teens, women and men in all sizes. We are also in need of NEW socks in the same genders and sizes as above. ThanksGiving Back Food Drive will run simultaneously with Spreading the Warmth. A complete list of food items will be posted in the October 14th bulletin. 11/17-12/9 - Angel Tree benefiting 7 agencies in the community. Angels will be on the trees the weekend of November 17th, (the weekend before Thanksgiving), to allow people to take advantage of sales after the Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you for supporting all our Outreach Programs and for caring and sharing! New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of loss and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and nonjudgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful and meaningful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) ADULTS: This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. Individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. Bereaved individuals will receive resources and an opportunity to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CHILDREN: This support group or 1:1 meeting with a compassionate and trained grief facilitator will offer resources and teach coping skills. Contact: Connie Theisen DIVORCE MINISTRY This workshop guided by divorced Christians uses discussion materials from the Divorce Recovery Workbook to offer support for divorced individuals. The focus is a positive psychology approach that helps attendees identify and build upon existing personal strengths to navigate through this difficult time and move toward healing and inner peace. Ministers of Care Ministry needs volunteers We are offering a 5 week training for all those interested in the Ministers of Care Ministry. We visit Catholic patients at Southern Hills Hospital, 3 Assisted Living Facilities, 2 Rehabs, and the homebound, bringing them communion. The 1 st class will be Saturday, October 6 th from 9 am to 10:30 am in the Music Room inside the Church. The other 4 classes are th, th, th and 11-3 rd, same time and place. As we are growing, we are in need of more ministers. So we ask you to prayerfully search your hearts and consider becoming a part of this rewarding ministry.
