In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two ( one who is sent is the meaning of apostle ). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn t have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the Lord to hear what we ve sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God s name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. 4 With this being the middle of July, summer is kind of half over. At least, that s how I remember calculating my summer jobs when I was in the seminary: July 15 marks the mid-point of summer six weeks left before I go back to school. I had a variety of summer jobs: maintenance at the Ambassador Motel in downtown Las Vegas; laying sewer pipes for a housing development at Lee Canyon; runner for an eye doctor and some lawyers in downtown Las Vegas, bagging groceries and stocking shelves at Panorama Market on W. Charleston; but my last seven summers were spent working at the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas: first (before I was 21) as a counter in the Count Room upstairs, then in the Casino itself as a Slot Machine Floorman and a Cashier in the Cage. Although I loved working at the Horseshoe, on July 15, I was marking the days until the summer job was over and I could go back to school usually back to Catholic University in Washington, D.C., but one year headed to Rome, Italy and another to Parish, France. And, I always made August 15 my last day at work so that I could have two weeks of vacation before going back to school. It was kind of a shock after nine years of college (4 undergraduate and 5 graduate) to NOT return to school because now I was done studying, ordained a priest and was beginning my full-time employment 44 years now and going strong! But now, I don t know when the mid-summer date is for local students any more! When I was in grade school and high school in Las Vegas, we started school AFTER Labor Day and were finished BEFORE Memorial Day: meaning ALL of June, July and August were vacation months. Now, students go into the first week or two of June and some are heading back to school in the first week or two of August! Many of our programs, especially the religious educational programs, then, try to coincide as much as possible with the Clark County School District calendar. We require that each family with children in any of our religious educational programs MUST REGISTER every year. For the program for 3 5 year olds, see page 5 and all the information about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. For grades Kindergarten through 5 grades, see page 5. For grades 6 8 (the EDGE program) and grades 9 12 (the UPPER ROOM program), see page 6. To all current teachers (catechists) or aides in the Elementary School Religious Education program AND to ALL who are interested in volunteering in this program, there will be a Meet and Greet Anna Forsberg, our new Director of Religious Education, on Thursday, July 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the Upper Room. Snacks will be served! Finally, I am happy to welcome back to Holy Spirit, Jonathan Tuala, in the Music Ministry. Debbie Hasterok is still THE Director of Music Ministry and Jonathan is now her parttime assistant. See Debbie s column on page 5. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Next meeting: July 28 (call for location) Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Page 4

5 ~Catechesis of the Good Shepherd~ Help me do it myself. The young child s motto could very well be, Help me do it myself. How many parents, if they heard their small child say, Help me would not race to the child s side to see how they could aid their child, prevent an accident or avoid an impending peril? Maria Montessori overheard a young child s comment, Help me do it myself. She realized the child s need for independence, in discovering his or her own capabilities. As a parent, it is sometimes easier and quicker to do things for our children, but when we step in and do it for them, we do not allow them the opportunity to become independent. If you heard your child say, Help me do it myself, how would you respond? In the atrium the call is Help me come to God by myself, do you have your 3-5 year old registered for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd! Jonathan will be serving at most evening Masses and every other weekend at the 8 and 10 am liturgies. He will be present at most musician rehearsals, and we will both be available for funeral liturgies. Sharing some of the music responsibilities will give both of us the flexibility to spend more time with family (and possibly take part in the occasional musical endeavor!) I am looking forward to working with Jonathan and the many wonderfully talented musicians who are such a vital part of our Musical family here at Holy Spirit, as we begin preparing to celebrate another spirit-filled new liturgical year. Welcome back, Jonathan! Grades K-5 Religious Ed Dear Parishioners: We are currently planning our exciting Religious Education program for children who will be in Kindergarten through Fifth grade during next school year. Classes will begin September 13 and end May 15. As you can imagine, volunteer teachers, aides and other assistants are essential to the success of our program. Though we have consistently been blessed with many wonderful volunteers to assist us in our ministry, the rapid growth of our Parish finds us in need of still more! Many people think of giving to a Parish strictly in terms of financial contributions, however, a gift of time in volunteer ministry could be your way of contributing to the mission of our Parish! I encourage you to consider volunteering for such a position in our Religious Education program. The time commitment is minimal one hour per week of class time on a Sunday between 11.15am and 12.15pm (Classes are held between the 10am and 12.30pm Masses). Full training is provided at no cost and program tuition is free to all parents who volunteer in the Religious Education program. All you truly need is a willingness to help in nurturing the faith formation of our Parish s young people!
