The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today s scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In today s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today s Gospel reading, Receive the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 6: Contact Len Urso, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. Registration packets are available in the office or at Mass. First Communion is a two-year program, beginning as early as first grade. Marriage: We now offer our own Marriage Prep Program at Holy Spirit; however, no weddings can be held at Holy Spirit until our church is built. The chapel at BGHS cannot be used for any weddings at all -- by decision of Bishop Pepe. Fr. Bill s preference is that the wedding ceremony be held at Christ the King. 4 HAPPY FEAST DAY! HAPPY PENTECOST! What is Pentecost? Here s a definition found in Wikipedia: Pentecost ("the fiftieth day") is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks, a prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Sinai. This feast is still celebrated in Judaism as Shavuot. Later, in the Christian liturgical year, it became a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ (120 in all), as described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1 31. For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described by some Christians today as the "Birthday of the Church". As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples were in The Upper Room celebrating the Jewish Feast of Pentecost which was 50 days after Passover. It was on this day, that the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus came to the Apostles and disciples in sound and sight : a noise like a strong driving wind and tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. This event changed the lives of those who received the Holy Spirit: there were on fire for God and nothing could dampen their spirits or stop them from proclaiming Jesus Christ. In fact, Peter, who only 50 days earlier had denied ever knowing Jesus, preached that Pentecost Day so eloquently that 3000 asked for Baptism. What happened to Peter? Some actually accused Peter and the others of being drunk on too much wine, but they, in fact, were intoxicated with the Holy Spirit. May we, the members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church Community, likewise be on fire with the love of God and intoxicated with the Holy Spirit. I mean may we be so excited about our faith that we are willing to share it with others. This is our seventh parish Feast Day since we became a parish. I challenge each of us to do two things as a response to our Feast Day of Pentecost by which we can show our enthusiasm for our faith and our parish: 1) Invite someone (non-catholic: of another Christian faith, of another religion or with no religious background at all) to look into our faith and attend an Inquiry Class at 6:30 p.m. any Monday night in the Office Conference Room. 2) Respond generously to the Summer Program of new pledges, renewed pledges or designated memorial gifts. We seem to be stuck in our Capital Campaign hovering at the two million dollar level. We need much more to even consider groundbreaking. So, I will be devoting summer and fall to a renewed commitment of fund-raising. Let us call upon the Holy Spirit to fire us up and get this Capital Campaign back on track and racing forward to raise millions more. God bless everyone! Happy Feast of Pentecost! Catechesis of the Good Shepherd It looks as if we will have a new spot in the bulletin and we will have more news to share with you on a weekly basis. We would like to thank all of you who are interested in the program and are already making it a success. Our information meetings were small but very interesting and encouraging. I was surprised at how many already knew about the work of CGS and are thrilled to get one up and running. I am speaking with Father Bill and working on a six long weekend session for trainings that will run one weekend a month. All are invited to train for this and are encouraged to do so. You do not have to work in the atrium or even for the atrium, this is an excellent opportunity to build your love of Christ OUR Good Shepherd and grow in the Catholic faith through understanding the Bible and Liturgy. Please keep your eyes on the bulletin and join us. We are also going to have materials days. We will have one for making : Sculpey people - (We will learn to make people together) Scripture Books - (Many Scripture books are used in the atrium) Painting and cutting out materials Making prayer cards and creating tracing packets sewing etc. Please join us on these days - you will find information in the bulletin soon. 5 Summer Outreach projects to benefit the children of: PROJECT 1: Pastor Dan will be taking 40 children on their first camping trip mid-july. They will need: New or gently-used sleeping bags Gift cards to purchase swim suits and towels (Walmart has them quite cheap!) We will start collecting this coming weekend! Project 2: The Outreach Committee needs help filling backpacks for the children going back to school in the fall. Backpacks and school supplies will be collected in July and August at Mass. Page 5

6 Registration for Confirmation Year Those who were in their Formation Year (Year 1) will automatically be enrolled into the Sacramental Year (Year 2) of Confirmation upon completion of the first year. Download a registration pack from our Blog site: Confirmation at Holy Spirit is a 2-Year Preparation program in which candidates participate in weekly Upper Room Life Nights, Monthly Confirmation Formation Sessions, Parish Ministry Projects, a Confirmation Retreat, and Liturgy. Generation to Generation Introduction Sessions Upon Registration, each Formation Year candidate will sign up for a Parent/ Teen Session called Generation to Generation. The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church s mission to evangelize, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge. At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders. Edge is open to all those in middle school even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge. Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education. 7 Holy Spirit Mission Team 2014! We have 23 missionaries committed to travel to Jamaica this August to serve the poorest of the poor. We will be assisting with the daily care of the children: physical therapy, medical treatments, feeding, playing and sharing friendship & love. Additionally, we will be completing work projects: general repairs, painting, construction, landscaping, etc. Support the Mission Team!
