1 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: February 24, 2019 ~ Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. Psalm 103:8 MASS SCHEDULE Monday Saturday 7:30 AM Saturday, 4:00 PM Sunday: 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM & 5:00 PM OFFICE HOURS Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.; Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 PM Saturday 8:00 AM.-12:00 noon. Closed Sunday HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH 5830 Mesa Park Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada Parish Office (702) Reverend William J. M. Kenny (Fr. Bill), Pastor Volume XI1 Issue 8
2 Part 4 of this series: The Concluding Rite This is the shortest part of the Mass, but that does not mean that it is the least important! In fact, no part of the Mass should be considered less important than any other. The Mass is one integral liturgy and each part is necessary for the proper celebration of Sunday Eucharist. A. The Greeting This is usually the words The Lord be with you. and the response of the assembly is And with your spirit. This back-and-forth dialogue is spoken several times during the Mass: it is a mutual blessing between the priest/presider and the people. B. The Blessing There are optional formulas for this blessing: 1. A simple blessing using the words May Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. ; 2. The deacon or priest may ask the assembly to bow their heads and pray for God s blessing. Then, one or more invocations may be spoken, and the people usually respond Amen. The conclusion is always as above, May Almighty God bless you..., followed by Amen. C. The Dismissal This is given by the deacon or priest and also has several formulas. The assembly s response is always: Thanks be to God. This is very strong. We are sent out to do God s work in our own families, neighborhoods and communities. Some have argued that this is a key, emphatic part of the Mass. In fact, the word Mass comes from a Latin word missa which means sent. Derivatives are dismissal, mission, missile. When Mass was spoken in Latin, the final words were: Ite, missa est. which literal translation is: Go, you are sent. The name given to one of the sacred books used in liturgy is called a missal. So, you could say that Mass is the liturgy of being sent out to preach the Good News ; and the Missal is the book of prayers used to dismiss or send people out of liturgies to continue God s work. DO NO HARM We listen quite a while before we get to the punch line of the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading David found Saul in a deep sleep, but would not harm him (1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23). Psalm The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading We shall bear the image of the heavenly Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). Gospel Give to everyone who asks of you. Lend expecting nothing back (Luke 6:27-38). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved D. The Recessional or Closing Song This is optional, but most Masses do have this as a final procession out of the sanctuary. At times, the Mass can end simply in silence. We have used this silent closing at times for dramatic effect; for example, during the more reflective or somber seasons of Advent and Lent. A few final remarks about Sunday liturgy: Strive to arrive at least 10 minutes before Mass and stay until the very end! This is not only common courtesy to the priest and other liturgical ministers, it is respect and reverence for God! I was taught that no one leaves until the priest has fully exited the worship space and is standing near the door (inside or out) to greet the people; in other words, the priest should be the FIRST to leave. Very few of us would intentionally miss the beginning of a movie or play or leave before the movie or play is over. Why do we give less respect for the Mass? Dress appropriately! I will never state a dress code and would NEVER embarrass anyone with a statement about their attire. All are welcome and some may literally have just dropped in to spend time with the Lord; BUT again, common sense dictates that we dress in clean, modest and becoming clothing as if we re attending some important event, because we are! READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; Psalms 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-13; 1 Corinthians 15:45-49; Luke 6:27-38 Monday: Sirach 1:1-10; Psalms 93:1-2, 5; Mark 9:14-29 Tuesday: Sirach 2:1-11; Psalms 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40; Mark 9:30-37 Wednesday: Sirach 4:11-19; Psalms 119:165, 168, 171, 172, 174, 175; Mark 9:38-40 Thursday: Sirach 5:1-8; Psalms 1:1-4, 6; Mark 9:41-50 Friday: Sirach 6:5-17; Psalms 119:12, 16, 18, 27, 34, 35; Mark 10:1-12 Saturday: Sirach 17:1-15; Psalms 103:13-18; Mark 10:13-1 Sunday: Sirach:27:4-7; Psalms 92:2-3, 13-16; 1 Corinthians 15:54-58; Luke 6:39-45 Page 2

HE RITE OF ELECTION is the second step on the catechumens journey toward Baptism. The Church chooses those it deems ready for initation and leads them into the more intense period of Lenten preparation. Those chosen inscribe their names in the BOOK OF THE ELECT as a promise of faithfulness to the call they have received from Christ. At the Easter Vigil, they will be baptized, confirmed and receive Eucharist. Thus they will be fully initiated into the Body of Christ. SINCE THEY ARE BECOMING ONE WITH US IN OUR CATHOLIC FAITH, it is only fitting that we should be present at this celebration to welcome and support them. This celebration occurs every year in our Diocese at the beginning of Lent in our Cathedral Church. Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5830 Mesa Park Drive, Las Vegas, NV First Sunday of Lent, March 10, 2019, 2:30 pm OUR PRESENCE WILL LEND SUPPORT AND WECOME! Page 5:
