He speaks in today s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a remnant in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too selfconfident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus Great Sermon. As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on Feb. 11/12.

4 Again, I m writing this on Tuesday, January 24 the very latest deadline for our bulletin printing company to get our copy. On Saturday/Sunday, I announced that we were now at $299,000 to goal. I placed a challenge of trying to get 299 people to make a gift/pledge of $1000 each to get us to that $299,000. Well, there was an outpouring of generosity at the end of each Mass; if my figures are correct, we got just at the Masses $26,400! So, now we re down to $272,600. Again, that s as of 1/24/17. By the time you are reading this, I m sure more will be added to that figure. I will have announced at all the Masses what our latest figure is. I had challenged myself to get to goal by the end of January which is Tuesday of this week. I hope that I can make a great announcement next week Super Sunday! Pray that my contacts with those who could give large donations/pledges come through. In the meantime, if you want to give anything to help us reach goal, please call the office ASAP and talk to Katie Breeden, our Director of Finance. I always loved this feast as a child because it had so many names : Presentation of Jesus, Purification of Mary, Holy Childhood Day, Candlemas, and, of course, Groundhog Day! The name Candlemas comes from the prayer of Simeon, who upon seeing Jesus, prayed:... a light to reveal you to the nations... February 2 is exactly 40 days after Christmas Day (December 25); in the Jewish tradition, a male was presented to the Lord and his mother purified when the baby boy was 40 days old. So, it is a custom to bless candles on this day. I will bless your new candles (of any kind, size, color or shape) at the 7:30 a.m. Mass. You must bring your own candle as we will not supply candles. On Thursday, February 3, we celebrate the feast of St. Blaise: Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia during the fourth century. Very little is known about his life. According to various accounts he was a physician before becoming a bishop. His popularity spread throughout the entire Church in the Middle Ages because he was reputed to have miraculously cured a little boy who nearly died because of a fishbone in his throat. From the eighth century he has been invoked on behalf of the sick, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat. The use of candles for the blessing of throats stems from the candles that Blaise used while in prison. When an old woman's pig had been miraculously rescued from a wolf by Saint Blaise, she would visit him in prison, bringing him food and candles to bring him light in his dark cell. I will bless throats only at the end of the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Thursday, February 3. Daily Masses are held each weekday (Monday through Saturday) in the Gathering Place trailer on our property at 7:30 a.m. Have a great week!
