Christians, too, are called to do everything for the glory of God. In today s scriptures Paul reminds us that the best way for us to glorify God is to seek to benefit the many, as Christ did when he shed his blood for all of humankind. The reading from Leviticus explains one way the Jews sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and leprosy away from the chosen people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper, who immediately re enters the community to spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). 4 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time - February 15, 2015 Shalom! As you know, 37 persons, mostly from Holy Spirit parish, went on a 15-day pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine. It was a wonderful trip and as about as flawless as could be: everything went smoothly our flights, hotels, bus travel all over the country, meals and visits to so many places. As much as possible, our schedule was to follow the life of Jesus Christ chronologically. Thus, one of the first places to visit was Bethlehem where Jesus was born and our last place was the Tomb of the Resurrection. In between, we visited many different sites connected to Jesus ministry: the Mount of Temptation, the place where he was baptized in the River Jordan, the place where the wedding feast of Cana was held, the locale for the Sermon on the Mount, the Sea of Galilee (we actually spent an afternoon ON the Sea of Galilee in a boat!), Nazareth, Capernaum, the Mount of the Transfiguration, the home in Bethany of Martha, Mary and Lazarus (we went into the tomb from which Lazarus was raised); we celebrated Mass in a chapel dedicated to The Upper Room (where Jesus ate The Last Supper); we walked the Via Dolorosa (The Way of the Cross), knelt at Cavalry, prayed at the tomb where Jesus was buried. We also visited some Jewish sites: Masada (the site of a massive suicide by 960 Jews in the year 73 A.D. who preferred to take their own lives rather than to be captured and/or killed by the invading Roman army), Yad Vashem (Israel s Holocaust Memorial), Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found), the Dead Sea, the tomb of King David, the Wailing or Western Wall which was the very wall that encircled the Temple in Jesus Day, Temple Mount (the site of that Temple. Likewise, we saw some Muslim places: the Mosque at the Dome of the Rock, many other mosques and minarets. For most it was their first-ever visit to Israel and, I know, that for all it was an experience of a lifetime. We have been asked often since our return about the safety of our time there: none of us ever felt a bit scared or nervous. Israel is a very safe country and everyone was so hospitable to us. I am positive that everyone of us would return if that opportunity should present itself again. On all the Fridays of Lent, there is going to be a Special Event beginning this very Friday after Ash Wednesday. It will be at 7:00 p.m. in The Upper Room. I will be making a presentation of The Way of the Cross based on our walk along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. Lenten Rules: Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. Those who are bound by this fasting observance may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Both of these observances are only for those in good health; those are exempt who must maintain dietary standards that would be compromised by observing such abstinence or fasting. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On February 18, 2015, we begin our Forty Days of Lent. This is a time of reflection and prayer for some and others may donate to charity in the tradition of almsgiving. For many though, the tradition of fasting is the chosen means of honoring their faith. Though the paths we take through the Lenten season may differ, we all embark on the same spiritual journey and we all share in the same goal; to reaffirm our commitment to Christ and to our fellow man. In reaffirming these commitments, I am reminded of a passage by the prophet Isaiah, who said that true fasting is, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless: clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own Is 58:6-7. We should consider then that fasting is not just a physical act, but a spiritual one. It is the emptying of sin in our hearts and of moral weakness in our minds. It is a baptismal renewal achieved through the giving of ourselves to God and to each other. Only by passing through this emptiness do we become spiritually full again. When we observe someone who is suffering or in need, we should remember that the person we are looking at is not really a stranger. As we all are sown from the same seed, what we are seeing is ourselves but with a different face. We are witnessing a manifestation of Christ in another form. So when we see those who are hungry and homeless, we should not turn our back. We should recognize, as Isaiah wisely states, that these are our own. In keeping with that wisdom, I ask you to include Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada as part of your Lenten Observance. If you pray, please pray for all those Catholic Charities humbly serves. If you fast, please consider donating your unused food to their food pantry. If you give alms, please remember the Annual Ash Wednesday Collection and the Faces of Hunger Campaign are wonderful opportunities to assist in the work of our Church for our brothers and sisters in need. This manifestation of God s love for all people is made possible by your devotion and generosity. Together, we are the hands of Christ serving the most vulnerable among us. I pray that this Lent, in your own way, you will all serve as shepherds to guide those in need into the Paschal mysteries we celebrate at Easter and God s divine light. The atrium is where the Mystery of God meets the mystery of the child. To have the child take that away and make it part of their person the child needs something material, the same way we needed Jesus as a human person in a human body. When the children reflects on the parables, live into the infancy narratives, or study the land Jesus came from, it is always accompanied by a material that these children can go to and work on that is how that mystery touches that child s life.
