3 YEAR OF MERCY - PARISH MISSION October Led by Father Frank DeSiano, Saint Luke Parish celebrated a special time of blessings and graces this past week for three days, afternoon and evening - hundreds of parishioners and visitors prayed, sang, celebrated Mass, heard sacred scripture and of course listened to the outstanding words of our guest preacher, Father DeSiano. The gift of God s mercy was alive and well at our parish mission. I wish to thank all those who so willingly served during the Mission - Jessica and Loneda for providing song and music; Sisters Theresa and Katherine; Fr. Peter; members of the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council; parish Liturgical Ministers; Lisa Scardamaglia and her refreshment committee and the many others who offered their time and talents to make the Mission a grace filled event. To Father DeSiano for guiding us closer to the love and mercy of God and of course all those who participated. It was fantastic! God bless you all! Page 2

There you can pick up a census card which can be filled out at that time or returned by mail or in the Sunday collection basket. You will then begin to receive weekly offering envelopes. PADRE PIO PRAYER GROUP The next meeting of the Padre Pio Prayer Group will be held on Tuesday, October 25th in the church. Guest preacher - Rev. Jun Hee Lee All are welcome! EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION-- A meeting has been scheduled for all Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion on Monday, November 7th at 7:30pm in the church. Your presence at this meeting is most important. We look forward to seeing you MASS BOOK The 2017 Mass Book will open on Wednesday, October 26th at 9:00am. An offering of $15 per Mass is payable in cash or by check. Limit of five Masses per family. Please bring exact change for number of Masses you wish to arrange. To accommodate the large number of parishioners on the first day, please come to the Pastoral Center. The next meeting of the Bereavement Group will take place on Thursday, November 10th in the Pastoral Center. Please note the change from Tuesday to Thursday due to All Saints Day on November 1st and Election Day on Tuesday, November 8th. If you need further assistance or if you are interested in attending the Bereavement sessions, please contact Sister Theresa at (718) who facilitates the group and who also offers bereavement counseling where needed. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Thank you for your generous response to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday. Our parish raised $2,034. While some go to serve in other countries to develop the Church and serve its people, all of us are called to pray and support the Missions from right where we live. To continue answering this call, download the Missio App which makes it possible for you to meet and support religious Sisters and Brothers, priests and dedicated lay leaders who provide help and hope in some of the world s poorest places. These missionaries provide essential education and health care, social outreach and advocacy, and pastoral service. They address basic human needs, while in every moment offering spiritual comfort and support to the suffering and the marginalized. 10 Diocese of Brooklyn Marian Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. in the Year of Mercy to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception The parishes of St. Luke and St. Mel would like to offer two options for you to join Fr. Gerard Sauer, Diocesan Pilgrimage Director, on a Marian Pilgrimage led by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. Fr. Peter will be going on the two day option. Why not join Fr. Peter on the pilgrimage? Upon arrival, take a guided tour or our nation s monuments. Following our visit of Washington, D.C., we will transfer to the hotel for time to unwind before gathering for dinner. Saturday, October 29 - Breakfast at the hotel followed by departure for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to participate in our Diocesan Pilgrimage. While at the shrine there will be time for prayer, confession and for visiting the many beautiful chapels before we gather for Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio. In the afternoon we will depart for our return to New York. Page 9

11 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday October 24 November 14 November 6 & 27 December 5 December 18 January 9 Jan. 8 & 22 February 13 February 12 & 26 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. 19 On Saturday, November 12, 2016, we will be going on pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Frances Cabrini in the Bronx and celebrating Mass at her tomb. We will leave from St. Luke Church at 8:30am and we will return by 3:00pm. The cost will be $20 and it will be collected that day. The Mass will be in Italian, but with some English as well. Coffee will be provided, but if you wish you are asked to bring your own lunch. There will be time to visit the shrine, pray at the tomb of St. Frances Cabrini, and meet her Sisters.
