2 April 16, 2017 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Dear Bishop Ray: Q. One of the recent homilies that I heard at St. Kevin Church mentioned that all we need to know about Jesus can be found in the Bible. Then, why aren t we told to read the Bible more? A. I certainly agree that hearing the scriptures proclaimed at Mass once a week is not enough! The scriptures are the Word of God. They should be read and meditated on. The Sunday readings are on a cycle of three years. By the end of three years almost all of the New Testament is read and much of the Old Testament as well. This is a good way for many people to hear the Scriptures proclaimed. But for someone like you who desires more, reading the Bible at home is an excellent idea. There are different ways to do it. One possible way to read more of the Bible though is to read the readings that Church offers us each day at Mass. A way to do this is to consult the Bishop s web site and click on the Daily Readings tab. Another thing to do is to read the Bible straight through, or at least the New Testament. Someone could start, for example, by reading Mark s Gospel and then moving on to the next. Something important would be to have a Catholic Bible like the New American Bible version because of the explanations offered in the notes. Another way is to join one of our parish Bible Study Groups (see Page 6 of this week s bulletin). Saint Jerome first translated the Scriptures from the original languages into Latin. He said, Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. So I would enthusiastically support anyone who wants to know Jesus better by reading the Bible daily! Church Page 6 St. Kevin Catholic Academy Alumni News Every year at the Feast Day Mass for the Solemnity of St. Joseph on March 19th, The Mary Louis Academy announces the annual TMLA Peacemaker Award. This highly prestigious award is in recognition of a student who has best represented the Sisters of St. Joseph philosophy and mission of love, unity and reconciliation within TMLA community during the year. This year, sophomore and honor student, Julia Bonanno, a 2015 graduate of St. Kevin Catholic Academy, received this great honor. Congratulations, Julia! Seeds of Faith There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul s letters are based on straightforward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encapsulated points of information bullet points. Scripture scholars call them kerygma, or kernels of our faith. Actually, kernels or seeds are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrection, exactly how these kerygma began to flower, how they continued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter seeds of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days. Follow Me Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer he wants you to be his disciple and friend. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this study; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer to Christ together The Eucharist: Food for Resurrection How do we celebrate Easter, the greatest of our Christian feasts? By doing what we do every Sunday and every day: celebrating the Mass. On the first Easter, as the heartbroken disciples walked the road to Emmaus, the Lord was with them but they did not realize it. They only recognized him in the breaking of the bread (Luke 22:35). It is the same for us. In the Mass, the breaking of the bread, we meet the risen Lord together. We meet him in each other, for by our baptism into his death and resurrection, we have become members of one body, the Body of Christ. We meet him in his word, in the liturgy the scriptures are proclaimed to us, that they might take root and grow in us. And we meet him in a special way in the Eucharist, the sacrament of his Body and Blood, which is food for resurrection: whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6:51). The Lord is risen indeed, and it is the Risen One who truly presides at this and every Eucharist. I AM the Bread of Life
