The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has been promoting a novena of prayer on Fridays in anticipation of the upcoming elections on November 8 th. It began on September 9 th. I apologize for bringing this to your attention so late, but the intentions so far have included: Sept. 9 On this National Day of Prayer we pray for peace in our communities Sept. 16 As we prepare for the national and local elections, may our political engagement be guided by our Catholic Faith. Sept. 23 May all people understand the moral and ethical dimensions of political decisions and decide accordingly. Sept. 30 May all Americans recall the necessity of dialogue, civility, and humility in this election season. Oct. 7 Through Our Lady of the Rosary s aid, may voters and elected leaders uphold the dignity of human life in their political engagement. Oct. 14 May Catholics recall all aspects of Catholic Social Teaching as they consider their votes. Oct. 21 May there be a transformation of politics to focus on the dignity of the human person and the common good. The USCCB suggests that, in addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants are encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the week s intention and for our civic leaders and upcoming elections. The remaining intentions will be included in the bulletin with a reminder to fast and pray. The food collection for the Pantry at St. Gerard Majella has been going very well, and Fr. Josephjude Gannon, the pastor, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the people who benefit from your kind donations. The October collection will take place next weekend. Please see the flyer in today s bulletin for the types of foods they are requesting from us. For November, the food collection will take the form of the Thanksgiving food drive. In December, since Christmas is the last Sunday of the month, we will anticipate the collection by one week and collect food on the weekend of December 17/18. Also, for your information, the St. Vincent de Paul truck will be here on Sunday, November 20 th, for your donations of used clothing. On Tuesday this week, there will be a Convocation of Priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn in Douglaston. It is a time for us to spend time with our bishop for prayer, reflection, and fraternity. Please pray for us as we gather with Bishop DiMarzio this week. Also, please remember to sign up for the Jubilee Year Pilgrimage to our diocesan cathedrals. It will be a good opportunity for parishioners to go through the holy doors, pray for the plenary indulgence, and enjoy a good meal together. Thank you to Fr. The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) will be holding a quick meeting immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass on October 23, 2016 for anyone interested in being a part of the 90 th Anniversary events that are scheduled to take place. There will be three different committees formed, and you are welcome to participate in one or all if you have the time. There will be an Irish Dinner Dance Committee, a Journal Committee, and a St. Kevin s Got Talent Night Committee. If you cannot attend the meeting but would still like to be part of one of the committees please the PPC at parishcouncil@stkevinflushing.org. Thank You! In order to obtain a plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (preferably, but not necessarily, within the context of Mass) pray for the intentions of the Pope On Friday, October 28th, we will have a Pilgrimage to St. James Cathedral and St. Joseph Co- Cathedral to journey through the Holy Doors during this Year of Mercy. A bus will leave St,. Kevin at 4:00 P.M., visit the two Cathedrals and enjoy dinner at Bamonte restaurant before returning home.
