4 July 3, 2016 Proper Summer Attire Summer is here and with it, hot weather. This usually means a different form of dress. Casual and light is the order of the day. However, we ask everyone to consider what exactly is appropriate for Sunday Mass. Sunday Mass is a sacred event. We gather in a special place (air conditioned), in the presence of God and one another, to do the most sacred thing we can do offer the Sacrifice of Christ to the Father. Certainly, such an event calls for the greatest degree of reverence and our attitude, shown in our dress, should be one of profound respect. How would you go to a family member s July wedding? Sunday Mass is far more significant. Shorts, cut-off jeans, tank tops, athletic shirts/ shorts and the like are not appropriate. Please, before setting out to church, ask yourself: does what I am wearing show respect for where I am going and tell everyone how I feel about this sacred action? Church Page 4 Nicaragua Mission The Team s next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 5th, at 7 P.M. in the St. Kevin Room in the rectory. All team members are urged to attend and anyone interested in helping in any capacity is welcome to join us. The Mission trip to benefit the abandoned and disabled children of the Mustard Seed Communities in Nicaragua will be August 20-27th. There will be an opportunity to donate to the Mission at the weekend Masses on July 16th and 17th. Cash is wonderful; checks may be made out to Mustard Seed. There are visitors in the churches every summer and familiar faces are among the missing. Some find the summer s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand and where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the sabbatical rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live. By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society s life. Vocation Thought The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Are you being called by the Lord of the harvest to proclaim His kingdom as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? If you are discerning a religious vocation, you are invited to call the rectory ( ) to speak with one of the parish priests or call the Vocation Office at or vocations@diobrook.org. The Lord appointed seventy-two whom He sent in pairs to every town. Luke 10 Luke s Gospel describes the calling and the mission of seventy-two others who are commissioned to bring in the harvest. The number is symbolic, since according to Jewish tradition the number of nations in the world is seventy-two. This then is a universal mission, a catholic mission to all the world. Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel, we hear Jesus inviting His disciples to be evangelizers. The harvest is abundant, Jesus says. But those who are willing to invite others to a deeper relationship with the Lord are few. Good stewards who are willing to witness their Catholic faith to others know they are like lambs among wolves. They are encouraged to be gentle, patient and loving, knowing they may face rejection and even fierce opposition. The Year of Mercy invites us to be better stewards of our faith, to give positive, courageous, joyful witness to others who have turned away from their relationship with Jesus. Is there someone we should be reaching out to this week? What is more delightful than the voice of the Lord calling to us? St. Benedict
