2 April 22, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Q. I heard that we are having a big celebration on June 3rd. Can you explain what is going to happen? A. Yes, we are celebrating the feast day of St. Kevin (June 3rd) in a special way this year! Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, our Diocesan Bishop, will celebrate our 12:00 Noon Mass and bless our newly renovated Church and Academy. Also, Father Robert Mema will celebrate his First Anniversary of Ordination at the same Mass. His classmates have been invited to concelebrate the Mass. Lunch will follow for all. We hope to fill the Church for the Mass. Please join us! St. Kevin Rosary Society Communion Luncheon Please join us on Sunday, May 6th, at the 12:00 Noon Mass. Our Communion Luncheon will follow the Mass in the Monsignor Finnerty Parish Center. Please call Betty at or Marge at by Tuesday, May 1st to make your reservation. The cost is $15 per person. Mass of Hope and Healing The annual Diocesan Mass of Hope and Healing, sponsored by the Diocesan Survivors Advisory Committee, will take place on Wednesday, April 25th, at 7:00 P.M. at the parish of St. Nicholas of Tolentine ( Goethals Avenue, Jamaica). The main celebrant will be the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio. All are invited to gather on this day to pray for healing for all those who have been impacted by childhood sexual abuse. ST. KEVIN RELIGION FAITH FORMATION CLASSES REGISTRATION FOR All children in public school should be registered for religious instruction from K, grade 1 through grade 8. Preparation for First Communion takes two years. Children will be receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation and First Eucharist at the end of their two year preparation. In order to be confirmed, students should be in 8 th grade and have to show that they have attended all grade religion classes following their First Communion, and successfully finished the Confirmation I (grade 7) and Confirmation II classes (grade 8). All classes next year will be held on SUNDAY MORNING BEGINNING AT 8:30 A.M. in the School Building and conclude WITH THE 10:00 a.m. MASS in Church. We invite parents to join us for the Mass. It will be a Family Mass with children and parents involved in the Sunday Liturgy. Children will be dismissed from Church. Treasures from our Traditions There are few openings for Shepherds in the classified ads today, but few occupations are as dear to the Christian heart. Most of us tenderly place shepherds by our Christmas cribs, name the Twenty-third Psalm as our favorite, and recognize Good Shepherd as a title of Jesus. Bishops carry a staff, called a crozier, modeled after the shepherd s walking staff. Long before Christian artists painted Jesus on the cross, they traced on the walls of their worship places images of a strong young shepherd, shouldering a lost sheep and bringing it to safety. Springtime is the season of lambing, a time when the shepherd not only learns the faces of the new arrivals, but also when the newborn sheep become attuned to the voice of the shepherd. This is exactly what we do as a community in Easter as we shelter and guide the newly received Christians, and also put our Lenten muscles to good use: listening more attentively to God s Word, and responding with springtime vigor to God s call. 7 Page 7 April 22, 2018 Responding to The Call Do we truly know the voice of Christ? Do we truly respond to the voice of our shepherd with our own distinctive voice? How often we attempt to imitate those around us, appropriating the response of another member of the flock to Christ. Perhaps we need to balance the image of being sheep of one flock with the image from the second reading, which tells us that we are all children of God. What child has precisely the same interaction with parents as his or her siblings? Instead, they frequently do and say things to distinguish themselves in the eyes of their parents. Whether we use the image of children or of sheep to understand our relationship with Christ, we believe that we are all known and called by name. With this great gift comes a responsibility: to respond to the call with our own distinctive voice, to take time to discern exactly what our call is, to determine precisely what the will of the Father is for each of us. Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel reading we hear Jesus referring to himself as the good shepherd. His sheep know him, trust him, listen to him and follow him; having faith that no harm will come to them as long as they stay close to him. We reaffirmed our faith in Christ when we renewed our baptismal promises at Easter. As stewards of our relationship with Jesus Christ, are we, like the sheep, willing to listen to Jesus, trust him, follow him no matter the cost to our comfort? Vocation Thought There is no salvation through anyone else. Does a life of joy in knowing you are following the Lord as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life inspire you? If the Lord is truly calling you, what is needed is trust. To help in your discernment, you are invited to call the rectory ( ) and speak with one of the parish priests or you can call the Vocation Office at Catholic Priest He has the most important job in the world. He also has the most powerful enemy trying to stop him from doing his work. Will you help him in his Vocation? Please Pray for our Priests. I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.
