He said they donated money to our Parish for his old car! Do you have information about this program? A. Yes, we recently received $100 (one hundred dollars) as a donation to St. Kevin Parish for a used car donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. If you or someone you know has a car they are no longer using, please call and make the arrangements. Tell them to make the donation to our parish and we will receive it. Thank you for your interest in helping our parish. Every donation is appreciated. As you know, Sunday collections don t cover all our expenses so these extras are really needed. Prayer for Vocations Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious live. 3 Page 3 September 24, 2017 Vocation Story - Bishop Chappetto I am grateful for this opportunity to share my vocation story with you, the parishioners of St. Kevin Parish. During this Year for Vocations promoted by Bishop DiMarzio and the Vocation Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn, we are all called to be more aware of our vocation story and to share it with others. I assure you that each of us has a unique vocation story for we are all individuals with different backgrounds. My story begins growing up in a very Catholic family. My parents were active and practicing Catholics. They loved their faith, the Catholic Church and our local parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in the Astoria section of Queens. The good examples that brothers and I experienced from our parents had a profound influence on my decision to enter the minor seminary (Cathedral Prep in Brooklyn) for high school and for two years of college. I also had the support of the priests and religious sisters in the parish, (there were 7priests in the Rectory and 24 sisters in the Convent). They were dedicated, happy and generous in their service to the parishioners. As students, they called us by name and made us feel special. So I would have to say that between my life at home and my witnessing what priests, religious sisters and brothers do, how they help people to grow closer to God, I became interested in the priesthood as a possible vocation. My time in the minor seminary and later in the major seminary (Our Lady of Angels in Albany because the local seminary was over-crowed now both are closed), were times of discernment, prayer, study and growth in my understanding of priesthood. My pastoral work in parishes, while a seminarian, convinced me that God was calling me, that this is what He really wanted me to do, and that I could be a very happy person in doing His work. My priestly ordination of May 29, 1971, was a day of great joy for me, my family and my parish. For the past 46 years, it has been a privilege to serve God. In spite of my own unworthiness, God has gifted me with a share in the priesthood of His Son. For this, I will be eternally grateful. I would recommend to any young man who is thinking of the priesthood to speak with a priest and get some advice on how to proceed. If a young man is looking for a life which helps people to get close to God, then priesthood is a possibility. If a young man is looking for a life of service, the priesthood may be the answer. To discover what God wants, we encourage young people to pray every day. Please consider attending the Diocesan activities and parish activities at St. Kevin, throughout this Year of Vocation. All activities will be posted in the Parish Bulletin and on the Parish website. In His will, we find our peace.

There is a small group but we know that there are many more who may not know of this opportunity. 5 Page 5 September 24, 2017 The Rosary Society will gather at the 10:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday, October 1st. Please remember to sit in front of the Blessed Mother Shrine. Our first meeting of the season will be on Tuesday evening, October 3rd at 7:00 P.M. in the Finnerty Parish Center. All ladies of the parish are invited to join us. The Adult Choir at St. Kevin is always looking for new members. We need men and women, young and old. The ability to read music is always a plus but not at all necessary. We strive to make all new members feel comfortable and welcome and the musical and spiritual experience can t be beat. Pun intended! Please consider joining us. We rehearse almost every Thursday at 8:00 P.M. in the church. Please use the doors from the parking lot closest to 45th Avenue. Practice ends promptly at 9:30 P.M. We sing at the noon Mass on Sunday as well as a few other special occasions. If you have any questions, please speak to Tom Sexton, our Music Director. The Children s Choir rehearses Thursday afternoons from 3 to 4:15 P.M. in the Church. Any child in grades 3 through 8 who is interested in joining should talk to Tom Sexton and take a permission slip to be completed and returned. Weekly Collection September 17, $8, Catholic Education Support....$1, The Holy Name Society will have their first meeting of the season on Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:30 P.M. in the Academy Cafeteria. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Reverend Robert Mema, our Parochial Vicar. St. Kevin Senior Club will meet on Tuesday, September 26th, from 1:30 to 4:30 P.M. in the Finnerty Parish Center. We are having a trip to Empire City Casino on Wednesday, September 27th. Your cost is $25 and you will receive the package of the day. If the Spirit is prompting you, what is needed is trust and the willingness to answer His call. To help in your discernment, you are invited to speak with one of the parish priests ( ) or you can call the Vocation Office at Mommy and Me Classes at St. Kevin Catholic Academy will begin on Wednesday, October 4th. The classes meet every Wednesday from 9:30-10:30AM in the school and the cost is $4.00 per child, per week. The classes are a great way for your child to interact and socialize with other children through various activities that include circle time, story time, music time and arts and crafts.
