1 The Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 St. Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:12-17) Hopefully one of the most important lessons learned as children from our parents is the importance of saying thank you upon receiving a gift. What at first may seem of little value expressing thanks enables us to value not only the gift but the gift giver and the relationship that exists between the gift giver and the one receiving the gift. I would, therefore, invite you to join the parish family for the annual Thanksgiving Day Mass on Thursday, November 22rd, Thanksgiving Day at 9:00AM. What better way to express our thanks to God the giver of all gifts - on this National Day of Thanksgiving - than by offering the Holy Mass. How sad it is when we celebrate Thanksgiving Day forgetting to say thank you to the ONE who is the source of all blessings, to thank so many who enrich our lives - and to thank almighty God from whom all blessings flow! Speaking of Giving Thanks, today at the 11:45 Mass the parish community along with me and the Pastoral staff will offer Mass in thanksgiving to all our parishioners who have supported so generously both financially and with their time and dedication. The parish has been truly blessed by their goodness and acts of love and kindness.. So join me in expressing a simple yet profound word of gratitude as we ask God s blessing upon all who gather for our Thanksgiving Mass! God bless. Let us pray for one another. 1

3 THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE In order to make the food available to those in need on Thanksgiving Day, we are collecting non-perishable food items the weekend before Thanksgiving. We will be collecting food for the poor on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17th at the 5pm Mass SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18th at all the Masses We are hoping to collect non-perishable Thanksgiving meal fixings, but all non-perishable foods are welcome. 6 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday November 18 December 3 December 9 January 14, 2019 January 13 & 27, 2019 February 11, 2019 February 10 & 17, 2019 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. For more information and to schedule a baptism appointment, please call Sister Theresa at (718) PARISH BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meet on TUESDAY, December 11th at 7 PM in the Pastoral Center. This group usually meets on the First Tuesday of the month in the St. Matthew Room in our Pastoral Center. This group provides emotional assistance for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. If you are interested in participating in these meetings please contact Sister Theresa at (718) Sister also offers individual Bereavement Counseling Sessions where needed. Please remember to pray for all who are grieving the loss of loved ones. 5

7 MASS for the DECEASED 2018 On Saturday, Nov. 10, the annual Mass for the Deceased was celebrated at noon at St. Luke Church. We prayerfully remembered the 130 people who were buried from St. Luke between Nov. 1, 2017 and Nov. 1, Families of those buried this past year were invited to participate in the mass and to enjoy some light refreshments after the mass in our Pastoral Center. One special feature of the celebration was the adorning of the Paschal or Easter Candle with the names of each of the deceased buried this past year. When the Paschal Candle is blessed and lit for the first time at the Easter Vigil, we sing three times as the candle is processed to the sanctuary : Christ our light Thanks be to God. This beautiful Candle is the constant reminder during the entire year that Christ is the light of the world and we are called to live in Christ s light and share that light with others. As the ribbons holding the names of our beloved deceased adorn the Paschal Candle, we are reminded that they are enjoying their new life with Christ, a life they began at their baptism and a life brought to fulfillment in their dying and rising with Christ. Let us continue to remember in our prayers, those who have died and the families and friends who grieve their loss, especially as the holiday times are approaching 6

9 ITALIAN DIALECT NIGHT Celebrating Italian Culture On Saturday, November 10th a wonderful night of Italian dialects with comic sketches, poetry, stories and a theatre recital was presented in our Pastoral Center to celebrate the Italian culture. Well known Sicilian Poet, Nino Provenzano was present and delighted us while reading his poetry. After these presentations the celebration continued with Dolci, hand made typical regional sweets, cakes and cookies and coffee. Many thanks to the numerous artists, participants and friends in the community that came together to make this evening a great success! 8

10 THE GIVING TREE In the spirit of Christmas, St. Luke s Parish is bringing you THE GIVING TREE WHAT IS IT? The Giving Tree is an opportunity for people to share their blessings at Christmas with those less fortunate. HOW DOES IT WORK? The ornaments on the Giving Tree have gifts written on them. Choose an ornament and take it home. Purchase the gift and attach the ornament to the unwrapped present. Place the gift under the Giving Tree before or after any Mass by December 9th WHERE DO THE GIFTS GO? All gifts are distributed to people in need through several organizations. WHERE IS THE GIVING TREE? The tree will be located in the church. Ornaments may be taken the weekend of November 24-25th. Gifts may be returned under the Giving Tree before or after all masses no later than the weekend of December 9th VERY IMPORTANT!!!! WE CANNOT ACCEPT GIFTS AFTER DEC. 9 TH. 9

CHRISTOPHER OTTILIE Provides services for troubled families, foster care and adoption, and the developmentally disabled. 10

12 ADVENT AT SAINT LUKE CHURCH Sunday Celebration of the Eucharist The Sunday Eucharist with its Scripture Readings is at the heart of the Advent Season. The traditional lighting of the Advent Candles recalling the longing for Christ, true light of the world will be celebrated at each Sunday Mass. Faith Sharing Groups In preparation for the Feast of Christmas 2018, Sister Theresa will offer the opportunity to prayerfully reflect upon the Gospels of the Four Sundays of Advent. After the 12 noon Mass on the Wednesdays preceding the four Sundays of Advent (Wednesday Nov. 28th, Dec. 5th, Dec. 12th and Dec. 19th), parishioners are invited to the Pastoral Center to reflect on the Advent themes which flow from the Sunday Gospels of Advent. Session on November 28th will meet in the Pastoral Center in the St. Cecilia Room while other sessions will meet in the St. John Room. The Giving Tree The Giving Tree is an opportunity for people to share their blessings at Christmas with those less fortunate. The tree will be located in the church and ornaments may be take the place the weekend of November 24th -25th. Please see the flyer in next week s bulletin for more details. The Family Mass Join us for a special Family Mass on Saturday evening December 8th at 5PM. As the season of Advent leads us to Christmas and the birth of our Savior, there is no better way to prepare, than to celebrate the Mass together. 11

Join the community in lighting the parish Christmas Tree on the Great Lawn and sing Christmas Carols as the Nativity Scene is blessed. The celebration will take place on Saturday, December 8th after the 5PM Mass. Advent Christmas Concert Please join us on Sunday, December 2nd at 3:00 PM for a beautiful Advent Christmas concert sung by the choirs of both St. Luke & St. Mel The concert will be held at St. Mel. Please invite your friends and family to come and enjoy! Reconciliation Monday Monday, December 17, 2018 was designated as Reconciliation Monday for Advent. We will have priests available to hear confessions at St. Luke from: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Christmas at Saint Luke Celebrate the joy of Christ s birth here at Saint Luke Church.
