2 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 July 2017 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor -- This past Thursday, the parish Golden Agers held their end of the year luncheon. All who attended enjoyed a delicious hot buffet and the company of friends and members. I would like to thank Eileen Horbert in a special way and all who give so much of their time and dedication to making the club such an enjoyable and beneficial gathering place especially Millie and Charlie Weigl. As we begin the summer months allow me to take this opportunity to thank the many, many generous volunteers who make Saint Luke such a vital and alive parish family. We are blessed with so many caring, generous parishioners who, as good stewards of God s gifts, share those gifts with other parish members - and beyond our parish. To name each person would be impossible - yet, I thank each and every one from the bottom of my heart. It is a joy and blessing to be your pastor! July and August provide a much needed change of pace to the usual rhythm of parish life. I pray you will be able to get some rest, vacation and the opportunity to do things not always possible - read a book, visit family and friends, go to the beach, whatever brings joy and re-creation into life; more time for prayer and being with the Lord. The possibilities may be endless. And may whatever we do lead us closer to the love of God and to others. 3 OF MANY THINGS -- - Summer Mass Schedule: During the months of July & August please note the change in the weekday Mass Schedule: Monday - Friday: 12 Noon Mass Saturday: 8:30am Mass Only one Mass will be celebrated on weekdays. As all of the neighboring parishes have morning Mass, Saint Luke will offer Mass at noon. The usual weekday schedule will return in September. - Sunday Mass Schedule remains unchanged. Saturday: 5:00pm Sunday: 7:30am/ 9:00am (Italian)/ 10:30am/ 11:45am/ 1:00pm & 5:00pm *************************************************************************** Please note: There will be NO Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament during the months of July, August and September (due to Labor Day). 4 GOD BLESS AMERICA This Tuesday, July 4th, we celebrate the birth of our country. Independence Day is a cause for true celebration for the greatest country in the world. We may not be perfect, but we are a country rich in natural beauty and resources; a country of freedom and justice for all, especially the freedom to practice our religion without government interference; a country that has welcomed and continues to welcome those who seek a better life. We are one nation, under God in whom we trust. And yet our freedom comes at a great price - those who fought and fight to keep us free. Happy Independence Day! In observance of Independence Day, The Rectory Office will close at noon on Monday, July 3rd. The office will remain closed on Tuesday, July 4th. 5 RECTORY OFFICE HOURS SUMMER SCHEDULE Beginning Saturday, July 1st, the Rectory Office will begin a summer schedule for office hours. Please note the following: Monday - Thursday 9:00am - 5:00pm (Closed for lunch from 12 noon to 1:00pm) Friday the Rectory Office is closed. Saturday - 9:00am - 3:00pm Sunday the Rectory Office is closed. Emergency sick calls requiring a priest can be made at any time by calling the Rectory. Please call ahead to make an appointment with a priest for any other needs. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We will return to normal Rectory Office hours on Tuesday, September 5th. Just a Reminder... No meetings will take place during the summer months of July and August. All meetings of parish organizations, groups and societies will resume after Labor Day. During the months of July & August, there is only one Mass at 12 noon. The church will be closed after the 12 noon Mass Monday through Friday. Page 4

8 SUMMER MISSION APPEAL - July 8 & 9 Next weekend we welcome Rev. Quang A. Nguyen, S.C.J. to our parish for the Summer Mission Appeal. Fr. Nguyen is a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart in Wisconsin. He will be speaking at all the Masses next weekend. Your prayers and generosity to Fr. Nguyen s mission will be most appreciated. *************************************************************************** MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND The care of parishioners who are sick and homebound is very important to the life of any parish and the ministers who participate in their care are clear signs that the community remembers those who no longer can attend church services because of age or illness. Saint Luke Parish is very fortunate to have Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who are devoted to the sick and homebound, some in their own homes and some in The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Whitestone. The ministers are very generous with their time as they visit the sick and homebound praying with them and bringing them holy communion. If you know someone who is in need of a minister s visit with holy communion, please contact Sister Theresa at (718) and arrangements will be made as soon as possible. Page 7

14 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese.
