3 Page 3 May 22, 2016 From the Administrator Dear Friends: Although the Easter Season ended last week with Pentecost, two special Solemnities are celebrated on the following two Sundays: the Most Holy Trinity (today) and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ/Corpus Christi (next week). Today we celebrate the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One of the first prayers we learn as children is the Sign of the Cross, and our life of faith is about entering more deeply into the relationship of love that God desires to have with us. Today s Solemnity invites us to learn from the relationship of love between the Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity so that we can imitate that love with one another. After the 5:00 PM Mass next weekend, we will have a Corpus Christi procession like we did last year. Weather permitting, we will have a simple procession around the block, making three stops for blessings with the Blessed Sacrament before returning to church for benediction. We invite all parish groups and societies to join us for this special tradition, which gives us an opportunity to give witness to our faith in the Eucharistic Lord in the streets of our community. We are glad to have José Díaz with us this summer, and we look forward to having him experience various pastoral situations during his 10 weeks at our parish. We ve asked him to organize a couple of initiatives, among them: 1) establishing a monthly food pantry to help local parishes with their provisions for the needy, and 2) organize a family trip to Great Adventure over the summer. You will hear more about these things in the weeks ahead. If you are interested in helping, feel free to speak to José after Mass or at the rectory during the week. On Monday of this week I will join with several of our parishioners for a training session for the ARISE program. Next fall, we will form small groups of parishioners to join together for bible study and faith sharing. Pope Francis constantly encourages us and challenges us to take a more active role in sharing our faith, particularly in small Christian communities. We pray that many of our parishioners will take the opportunity over the next couple of years to be a part of the ARISE program, which will be taking places in many parishes around our diocese. 5 Page 5 May 22, 2016 On Mother s Day our parish community held the beautiful Marian devotion of a May Crowning. All the children who received their First Holy Communion on May 1 st were invited to participate in this celebration. We extend a heartfelt thanks to the moms and dads who brought them to Mass for the May Crowning! As our cantor, Joe Mahowald, beautifully sang: Bring flowers of the rarest..., the second graders, in their first communion outfits, and some other children present in church, brought flowers to our beautiful statue of Mary. At the end of the procession, a boy carried the crown, and a girl was assisted by Fr. Paul to place the crown on Mary s head. Just a reminder: the family that prays together stays together, let us pray a Hail Mary or a decade of the Rosary every day during this month dedicated to our Heavenly Mother. May She walk with us and lead us to Jesus.

6 May 22, 2016 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 6 Opportunities to Serve! Catechist Needed As members of the Church, we recognize our dignity as baptized members of the Body of Christ. As such, we are all called to participate in building up the Kingdom of God. Our Religious Education Program here at St Kevin Parish provides the opportunity for people to respond to the call of spreading God s truth through the powerful ministry of catechesis. We need catechists, aides, and hall monitors for the Sunday morning program. Training is provided for this ministry, which is open to any Catholic who has been confirmed, is actively practicing his or her faith, and is in good standing with the Church. Please look into your heart and see if you are the one to answer God s call to feed His sheep. We need Catechists for both the Sunday morning program (11:00 AM to 12:30 PM), grades 1 thru 4, and for Wednesday evenings (7:00 to 8:30 PM), grades 5 thru 8. What is a Catechist? The original meaning of the word catechist is "teacher", or one who "echoes" God's word. But a catechist is more than just a teacher who has factual knowledge of the Catholic tradition and teachings. A catechist is a "minister" of the Church, one who is commissioned by the community to help parents to pass on the faith to the children of the parish. (Remember parents are the FIRST teachers of their children in the practice of the faith!) A catechist is also a "proclaimer" of the Good News of Christ, which assumes that he/she truly believes in Christ and therefore teaches with joy and enthusiasm. A catechist is a "mentor", showing the children by his/her own example of how to live as a Christian. Director of Faith Formation The Feast of St. Kevin on Friday, June 3, 2016, begins our Parish s 90th Anniversary celebration with the pilgrimage at 1 PM and a special Mass at 7:30 PM. With that in mind, the Parish Pastoral Council is looking for volunteers to help with planned events to commemorate our Anniversary Year. We re asking for a short-term commitment to an individual committee, formed for a few planned events. There will be an Irish Dinner Dance, a St. Kevin Parish Historical Journal and St. Kevin s Got Talent Night. 7 Page 7 May 22, 2016 Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel, Jesus talks about life with His Father and the Spirit. He tells His disciples that what belongs to the Father belongs to Him and that the Spirit will take from what is His and give it to them. Jesus helps us understand that the relationship between Father, Son and Spirit is one of perfect sharing and loving generosity. This shared life is the foundation for what we now understand as part of living life in the Trinity. The abundant generosity of those who are good stewards of the gifts entrusted to them gives us a glimpse into the love of the Triune God. Does the generosity with which we live our lives bear witness to God s extraordinarily generous life within us? Vocation Thought We boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.
