Can we please have the small Nativity Scene up in the church beginning the first week of Advent to help us all usher in the season of Advent? A. This is a very good question. Many pastors ponder as to whether or not the Nativity Scene should be displayed during the Advent Season. The general consensus and the vision seen by the Church is that, we follow the liturgical year. Liturgically speaking, the liturgical year reaches its culmination in the movement towards the Paschal Mystery of Christ: namely, His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. In other words, when Mass is celebrated throughout the year it is not a mere portrayal or depiction, or a mere remembrance, or a drama being portrayed. It is in fact as it is happening. More simply, we are living again the realities that we are celebrating. An example with regards to living again the realities: St. Gregory of Nazianzus in celebrating Christmas Mass states, Christ is born, give Him Glory. Therefore, embellishing on the Nativity Scene with Mary and Joseph in the stable would be counter-productive in the sense that we are trying to follow the liturgical year. In essence, if we follow the liturgical year, as it is happening, Mary and Joseph would be traveling..they would not have arrived yet. Furthermore, you may have noticed that we try to decorate the inside of our parish as close to Christmas as possible so as to maintain the atmosphere of the Advent Season. Yes, you may see angels and trees outside our property, and you may see other parishes decorated for Christmas, you may also see the Nativity Scene displayed in Rome and in St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York. Please take into consideration that these locations are touristy and the size and time needed to assemble is much longer than ours. Because we don t see the Church decorated early here at St. Kevin, it gives us time to truly long for His coming. The focal point of the Advent Season should be on the Advent Wreath. The Advent Wreath is a sign pointing us to Life in Christ, the only begotten Son who was born on Christmas Day. The essence of celebrating the Season of Advent has a twofold character: first, preparation of Christ as man and second, Christ s second coming in His Glory. We wish all our parishioners a joyful and prayerful Advent season! A Word of Gratitude from Fr. Gannon and his Parishioners Thank you for all your kindness and donations on Thanksgiving week. We here at St. Gerard's were able to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table of 100 families thanks to your help. It was a true grace filled beauty to see all the youth and parishioners working together on that Tuesday Night before Thanksgiving like a blessed factory of elves all set up to give away the turkeys and all the trimmings to those most in need. Know that everyone who received a dinner was asked to pray at their Thanksgiving table for the people of St. Kevin's and all who donated items. Thank you also for your blessed monthly donation of food for our food pantry. It is a joyful thing to know that in times of pain and darkness the body of Christ can truly be the light to those who see the light of the Church and Jesus. Are you being called to grow in holiness as a priest, deacon, religious brother or sister? If the Lord is truly calling you, what is needed is trust. To help in your discernment, you are invited to call the rectory ( ) and speak with one of the parish priests or you can call the Vocation Office at Active Waiting As this new liturgical year unfolds, today s readings are most appropriate, for they root us in what it means to live authentically as Christians. The Gospel, with its frightening predictions of the end times, invites the hearer to be vigilant at all times (Luke 21:36). This kind of vigilance is not at all passive for the Christian. Instead, it is a kind of active waiting. And what should we be doing while we are waiting for the coming of the Lord? The second reading gives us the answer: abound in love for one another and for all (1 Thessalonians 3:12). Today is all about promises made and fulfilled. May this Advent season root us all firmly in a stance of active waiting for the Lord, who brings justice and peace.

6 December 2, 2018 First Sunday of Advent Page 6 Look what s Happening During Advent The Advent Wreath and its Symbolism The Advent Wreath is no ordinary wreath! The importance of this wreath is not the same that of which we hang on a door, lamppost, or the front grill of a truck. No, the very essence of the Advent Wreath signifies LIFE - both the present and eternal life. The significance of the Advent Wreath is revealed by several components: namely, the evergreens, shape, and candles. First, there is a strong connection between the Christian life and the several types of evergreens used to create the Advent Wreath! Evergreens such as the laurel depict the victory over suffering and persecution; pine depicts immortality; cedar depicts strength and healing; and holly depicts the crown of thorns. Second, the shape of the Advent Wreath is that of any traditional wreath - circular. The essence of the circle is that it has no beginning or end. More importantly, it signifies that God is eternal, the immortality of the soul, and the eternal life that is only found in Jesus Christ! Lastly, there are four candles on the Advent Wreath which depict the four weeks of Advent. There is a tradition which holds that each week signifies one thousand years dating to our first parents - Adam and Eve to the birth of Jesus Christ. There are two colors of candles present on the wreath: violet and rose. Three candles are violet and represent prayer, penance, and preparation during this period of Advent. The rose candle is lit on the Third Sunday of Advent and represents joy. One way, of many, the priest and deacon resemble joy is by wearing rose colored vestments which indicate that we have journeyed to the half point of the Advent Season. The lighting of a new candle each week symbolizes the joyful expectation and the drawing ever nearer to the celebration of Christmas day, but particularly for Jesus second coming - which is His second glory!
