2 The Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 From the Pastor Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York Each week the bulletin contains a report on the amount of Sunday and special Collections as well as contributions to various parish and diocesan campaigns. I am so thankful for your generous support of these appeals - support that often is a sacrifice and always a strong witness to your love for the church, even in difficult times. Some may ask - where does all that money go? Let me give you an example. This past week I received our annual PARISH ASSESSMENT from the Diocese. This year s assessment for September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019 is $62,000 which we must pay by the end of the fiscal year - added to the insurance bill of over $50,000 to cover the same fiscal year. Without your cooperation and generosity we would never be able to meet these and the many other obligations made on our parish finances. So if you can make an increase in your weekly Sunday offering it would be greatly appreciated as it becomes more difficult each year to cover expenses. Last weekend, October 5,6,7 the Fall Festival proved to be a great success both in offering family fun and raising needed funds for the parish. Hopefully, next year s festival will be even better being built on the experiences of this first Fall festival. Thank you to all our volunteers and all who worked to make this another success for the parish. Special thanks to Sabato Daniele and Sal Colak, co-chairs of the festival. The 300 Raffle was a great success with all 300 tickets sold. The winning number was #0087 taking home 1/2 of the $30,000 raised. Thanks to Jane Cazzorla for coordinating this part of the festival. Thank you all who visited the festival and all those - too many to name here - for their dedication and hard work. The Annual Catholic Appeal continues to grow slowly to our parish goal of $100,500. Have you made your gift yet? If so - thank you; if not, please consider a gift today as the ACA 2018 ends on 12/31/2018. Finally, thank you for all your prayers and best wishes offered for me during this past week as I went to St. Francis Hospital for some heart tests and evaluation. Please keep me in your prayers as I try to strengthen a weak heart. You are all in my prayers! God bless. Please keep me in your prayers! ALL SOULS MASS The annual All Souls Mass for the faithful departed of our parish and their families, especially those who died and were buried from Saint Luke Church this past year (from November 2017 until October 2018) will be celebrated on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10th 12 Noon Saint Luke Church All are invited to join in praying for our beloved faithful departed and the light reception to follow in the Pastoral Center. 1

3 LITURGICAL MINISTERS MEETING Important Meetings for Liturgical Ministers Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Monday, October 22nd at 7:30 pm in the Church Lectors Monday, October 29th at 7:30 pm in the Church Ushers Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Pastoral Center All Liturgical Ministers are asked to attend the appropriate meeting MASS BOOK The 2019 Mass Book will open on Wednesday, October 24th at 9:00am in the Pastoral Center an offering of $15 per Mass is payable in cash or by check. Limit of five Masses per family. Please bring exact change for number of Masses you wish to arrange. To accommodate the large number of parishioners on the first day, please come to the Pastoral Center. If possible, please have dates and times of Masses you wish to arrange prepared in advance so that we may use time efficiently. Thank you for your cooperation. 2

5 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. This group usually meets on the First Tuesday of the month in the St. Matthew Room in our Pastoral Center. This group provides emotional assistance for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. If you are interested in participating in these meetings please contact Sister Theresa at (718) Sister also offers individual Bereavement Counseling Sessions where needed. 10 From the School.. CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH 4-1 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month which is from Sept. 15th through Oct. 15th. CELEBRATING COLUMBUS Nursery 3 worked on their Christopher Columbus art projects. Then each child sailed a little sailboat in water! PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES During the first month of school students were involved in several soccer activities and games. They also exercised together using fitness cards, where they learned a variety of new exercises. 9

12 COLUMBUS DAY PARADE PADRE PIO FLOAT Saint Luke s Padre Pio Prayer Group participated in the Columbus day Parade on October 8th with a float made by our parishioners. The parade that marched down Fifth Avenue stopped in front of St. Patrick s Cathedral. St Francis of Assisi - Blessing of the Animals - October 4th On October 4th, in celebration of Saint Francis, all our parishioners pets were invited to receive a special blessing from Msgr. Tosi. 11

13 PADRE PIO DINNER DANCE Il Gruppo di Preghiera di San Luca Festeggia Padre Pio Il 23 Settembre abbiamo festeggiato Padre Pio con la processione dalla Chiesa di St. Mel alla nostra chiesa dove abbiamo participate alla messa solenne. La participazione e stata numerosa a devozione al nostro Santo, Padre Pio. Il 30 Settembre abbiamo tenuto il nosto Dinner-Dance Annuale a beneficio dell Ospedale Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza in San Giovanni Rotondo. Ancora una volte con un grande successo con un ricavato totale di $5,870.Ed in fine, la partecipazione alla parata del Columbus Day a Manhattan. E il nostra 8 anno che siamo riusciti a portare il carro addobbato con stendardi e bandiere rappresentanti San Pio, camminando per la 5th Avenue.Quest anno e special ricordare il 50 Anniversario della morte di Padre Pio e il 100 Anniversario del ricevimento delle stigmmate. E con la viva fede che celebriamo questi eventi e ci affidiamo al caro Padre Pio per la sua protezione. Un grazie di cuore a tutti per la vostra partecipazione. Viva Padre Pio Il Gruppo di Preghiera San Luca St. Luke s Prayer Group Celebrates Padre Pio On September 23 we celebrated Padre Pio with a procession from the Church of St. Mel to our church where we participated in a solemn mass. The participation was numerous in devotion to our Saint, Padre Pio. On September 30th we held our annual Dinner-Dance for the benefit of the "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. Once again with great success with a total proceeds of $ 5,870. And finally, participation in the "Columbus Day" parade in Manhattan. It is our 8th year that we were able to bring the decorated float with banners and flags representing Saint Pio, walking on 5th Avenue. This year it's special to remember the 50th Anniversary of the death of Padre Pio and the 100th Anniversary of the reception of the stigmata. It is with the living faith that we celebrate these events and we entrust ourselves to dear Padre Pio for his protection. A grateful heart to all for your participation. 15 It s Soon National Vocations Awareness Week! As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marry, some to priesthood and others to religious life. Some remain as generous single people. Fully living our own vocations - and teaching young people how to discern God s call - is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. November 4, 2018 begins National Awareness Week. During this week, please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life - children, grandchildren, students and friends - to be open if God calls them to priesthood or consecrated life.
