3 Page 3 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 7, 2018 Q. When the parish reaches its goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal, what happens to the money received over the goal? A. As you can see, we are getting very close to reaching our goal, thanks be to God, and our generous parishioners. Any monies over goal will come directly back to St. Kevin Parish to help us with our Debt Reduction. As you may realize, we are still paying off our expenses for the beautiful restoration of our Church and Academy. The Annual Catholic Appeal will help us in this effort. Parish News 2019 Mass Book Opening The 2019 Mass Book will open on Saturday, October 13th, in the Msgr. Finnerty Parish Center, AFTER the Mass of the Anointing of the Sick, until 12:00 Noon. The Mass Stipends will be as follows: 1) 9 A.M. Masses - Monday through Saturday (Single Intention) $15 2) Vigil Mass - 5 PM Saturday evenings - Multi-Intention Mass, (more than one name will be taken for the Vigil Mass) $20 3) Sunday Masses - 8 AM, 10 AM and 12:00 Noon $20 4) Holy Day of Obligation Masses $20 5) Purgatorial Society Mass - 8 AM Mass on the First Sunday $15 Memorial Gifts may also be reserved at this time as well: 1) Bread and Wine for the week $25 2) Sanctuary Lamps (2) $25 each 3) Altar Candles $25 4) St. Kevin Shrine Lamp $25 5) Two Vases of Flowers $100 St. Kevin Rosary Society Our first meeting of the season will be on Tuesday, October 9th, at 7:00 P.M. Please join us in the Msgr. Finnerty Parish Center for the recitation of the Rosary with Benediction. At this time, new members will be installed into the Rosary Society. We will then have our general meeting. We hope that many ladies of the parish will join us for the evening. The Craft Group will meet on Thursdays in the Rectory at 9:30 A.M. St.. Kevin Holy Name Society We invite all men of the parish to our meeting on Wednesday, October 10th at 7:30 P.M. in the Academy Cafeteria. Each year our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and our RCIA for Young People programs welcome people from a variety of faith backgrounds as well as Catholics who need to complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Diocesan Mass of Remembrance and Healing for Pregnancy and Infant Loss On Monday, October 15th, at 7 P.M. at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church ( Goethals Avenue, Jamaica) a Mass of Remembrance and Healing for Pregnancy and Infant Loss will take place. The Mass is a liturgical celebration where one can experience the tender and healing love of God. A special invitation is extended to all who grieve the loss of a child/children as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion. These losses may be recent or extend over many years. A commendation ceremony has been built into the Mass in which participants will have the opportunity to name their babies and offer them to the Lord. The names of these children will be collected and sent to the Sisters of Life, who will pray for them throughout the month of November.

St. Kevin Mustard Seed Nicaragua Mission With the condition in Nicaragua continuing to deteriorate, Margaret and Tony will continue to host a brief prayer time at their home on Tuesday evenings at 6:30. All are welcome to join us as we pray for the Nicaraguan people and the disabled, abandoned children of Mustard Seed Communities. If you can t join us at our home, please pray with us wherever you are on Tuesday evening. Since we are prevented from participating in our annual Mission, we are not able to bring material supplies to the children, so your financial support is even more important. At the start of a new CYO season, all young athletes in Queens Deanery #5 parishes are invited with their parents, coaches, aides and volunteers to pray together for a fun, successful and safe sports season. Bishop Chappetto will be the main celebrant. A special blessing will be offered to everyone and a small gift of appreciation will be given to each athlete! Please come wearing your team uniform. In today s Gospel Jesus teaches us about the sacredness of marriage; a covenant that is a gift from God. Our relationships with our spouses, family, friends, coworkers, and those in our community of faith are all gifts from God. Jesus reminds us today that it is the hardened heart that damages or breaks up relationships. Good stewards understand the holiness of relationships and pray for the love, patience, understanding and kindness necessary to sustain those relationships. Take time out to prayerfully reflect on your relationships this week. Is your stewardship of these relationships as God intended? What relationships need to be healed and reconciled?

10 October 7, 2018 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 10 October is the Month of the Holy Rosary and is dedicated to one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. Catholics are encouraged to pray the rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer which brings down God s blessings on the faithful. It is a biblically inspired prayer which is centered on meditation of the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity. Pope Francis has asked all Catholics to pray the rosary daily during the month of October, asking Mary and St. Michael the Archangel to intercede for the protection of the Church in a moment of spiritual turbulence. The pope said that recitation of the rosary would invoke Mary s intercession, placing the Church under her protective mantle. Pope Francis also encouraged that Catholics end the rosary with the recitation of the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, composed by Pope Leo XII: Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sunday, October 7th is Respect Life Sunday October is Respect Life Month Respect Life Sunday kicks off a month-long celebration of human life by our family of faith in the United States. Respect Life Month proclaims the immeasurable value of every person from conception to natural death. The theme for Respect Life month this year is Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent and highlights the call to build a culture of life as missionary disciples.
