4 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday April 9 April 15 & 29 May 7 May 6 & 20 June 18 June 10 & 24 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. 5 Altar Servers On Sunday March 18th at the 10:30 Mass I had the tremendous blessing and honor to install 9 new Altar Servers. They begin their journey of service at the Altar of our Lord. We congratulate them and give thanks to their parents, guardians and grandparents for their support and love in this ministry at our parish. All the priests are looking forward to their assistance at the celebration of the Liturgy. Let us pray for our new Altar Servers. May they always have the joy of serving at the Altar of our Lord. COLLECTIONS Envelopes Mailed 1,964 Amount Needed Each Week $13,425 Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for Vocation Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and the laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told your Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. Novena of Thirteen Tuesdays in Honor of Saint Anthony of Padua The annual Novena in preparation for the June 13th feast of Saint Anthony will begin on Tuesday, March 20th immediately following the 12 noon Mass. The Novena will continue every Tuesday until the celebration of Saint Anthony s Feast Day Wednesday, June 13th. Take and eat Take and drink... GOLDEN AGE CLUB The Golden Age Club will not be meeting on March 22, March 29 or April 5. Meetings will resume on Thursday April 12th. Permission has been given by Bishop DiMarzio to Restore the distribution of the Precious Blood at Mass. We will restore this practice at the Solemn Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29th. 6

9 MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. We celebrated St. Patrick during our 4th Annual Celebration of Irish Heritage on Sunday, March 11th. We sold 400 tickets to this event! We celebrated with Irish Dancers, Irish Music and Corned Beef sandwiches. It was a wonderful afternoon spent with parishioners and friends. Thanks to all that attended and all those who made the day a success! 8

10 CHESS NUTS PROGRAM AT SAINT LUKE SCHOOL We completed our winter session of Chess Nuts on Monday, March 12, We had 25 children enrolled in the program this winter session for 8 weeks and as usual it was a really nice group of children. We have been running the program at Saint Luke School since January The improvement in their chess skills is very apparent with each session and it makes for a competitive tournament. We have two instructors to allow the newer students get separate instruction until they are brought up to speed. First place prize was awarded to Franco Aleo with three wins and one tie. Second place was a six-way tie with three wins each - Liam Costello, Jack Lercara, Alex Morichini, Ryan Ma, Alex Soto and Peter Zuccarello. Honorable Mention trophies went to Anthony Nuccio and Hanna Vojar. Medals were awarded to the rest of the participants. We look forward to playing chess again in the spring! 9

11 YOUTH FROM SAINT LUKE PARISH BAND TOGETHER TO HELP HAITI Current and former students of our parish have stepped up to bring relief to Haiti. The Caribbean island nation still reels from the one-two punch of an earthquake and a hurricane. On March 7, 2018, our students and long-time parishioner, Pat Brintle, were featured in a Currents News report on NET TV, the official television station of the Brooklyn Diocese. Over the last few years, the students have helped the organization, From Here to Haiti, with fundraisers and uniform collections. You can watch the news report online on the internet. 12 LIVING THE EUCHARIST PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD 6 On The Road To Sainthood The Paschal vigil is the center and goal of our liturgy. We live for this night. (La vigilia Pascual es centro y meda de nuestra liturgia. Viviamo para esa Noche. ) With these words, Blessed Carlos Manuel Rodriquez Santiago ( ) expressed his great passion for liturgy, for the Paschal Mystery, and for the Risen Christ. Carlos Manuel ( Chali to his friends) worked as a clerk in an office. He was chronically ill. He never finished his education. He died young. Yet he shared his faith. He founded several religious publications. He taught religion, counseled, and wrote. He touched so many lives so generously that in 2001 he was declared Blessed, the third step on the road to sainthood. He is the first Puerto Rican to be accorded this honor. Chali was part of the Liturgical Movement of the early twentieth century. He worked hard to bring the liturgy to the people, and the people to the liturgy. Even before the Second Vatican Council, the reform of the liturgy was underway. It began with Holy Week. In 1951 Pope Pius XII restored the Easter Vigil to its ancient splendor as a night service welcoming the Resurrection. Later (in 1955) he restored the rest of the Holy Week liturgies. Chali conveyed the meaning of these liturgies to ordinary parishioners, so they could come to know and love them. As Holy Week begins, it is good to remember how much we all owe to people like him. Holy Week Begins With Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, another Holy Week begins. The churches are arrayed in red, the color of martyrs. They fill to overflowing with people and palm branches. Today we remember the Lord s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and his journey to the Cross for our salvation. Throughout this Holy Week we will continue to meditate on the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter Triduum (which begins with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, and continues through Vespers on Easter Sunday evening) is the center of the whole church year. Of course, we remember the saving death and resurrection of Jesus all year long, whenever we celebrate the Eucharist. But our annual celebration of the Paschal Mystery Christ s Passover helps us to see just what he accomplished. Satan is defeated. Death has no more power over us. We have been given a new life. The high point of the Triduum is the Easter Vigil. This is the night when Christ rose from the dead. It is our Passover feast. This is when we baptize and confirm and bring new members to the table. This is when we sing the alleluia, silent all Lent. This is when the feast of Easter begins. The Masses of Easter Sunday overflow with the joy we first taste at the Vigil. Three Days of Wonder Throughout Lent, through the Living the Eucharist program, we have been reflecting on Sunday Mass. During this Holy Week, a time of devout recollection, prayer, and liturgical celebration, we have the opportunity to delve into the mystery of the Eucharist with the whole Church. 11

13 LIVING THE EUCHARIST PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD 6 On Holy Thursday, we meditate on how Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper. We also experience gratitude for the priesthood, established at this meal. The washing of the feet, in memory of Jesus own act of humble service, gives us a chance to reflect on how we serve others. The emblem of eucharistic living is how we care for the lowest and the least. On Good Friday, the reading of the Passion and the veneration of the Cross invite us to see the depth of God s love for us, poured out in Jesus. He loved us even unto death. This is the love celebrated in the Eucharist. The salvation Christ won for us on the Cross is at the heart of the Mass. Reflect The Passion of Christ was redemptive suffering. When we join our sufferings with his, they too can become part of the mystery of God s love. Ask yourself: Where do I experience suffering in my life? Can I offer my pain to God, joined to the faithful suffering of Jesus? Finally, in the Easter Vigil, we recall the story of our salvation, from creation to resurrection. When the elect are baptized, confirmed, and brought to the Eucharist, we see in the Eucharist the crowning glory of Christian initiation. Eucharist is the sacrament of who we are in Christ. What Changes? Our Catholic understanding of the Eucharist is centered on the change that comes upon the bread and wine as they become the Body and Blood of Christ. This change is real, aweinspiring, and important. Yet, when we open ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist, the change or transformation that takes place there goes beyond what happens to the bread and wine. Something also happens to those who participate. We change. Participation in the Eucharist makes us into the Body and Blood of Christ, so that we may be poured out and given for the life of the world. The Church is called to share in the mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Like Carlos Manuel, we are called to share Christ s light with others. Like a ripple-effect, the gift of God s saving love flows from the Eucharist, through us, to those we encounter in the world. Act Attend all three of the Triduum liturgies this year, if you can. The Mass of the Lord s Supper, the Celebration of the Lord s Passion, and the Easter Vigil are actually one great liturgy spread out over three days. Treat yourself to the full experience. Pray Lord Jesus, by dying on the Cross and rising to new life, you brought hope to the world. Help us hold fast to that hope. By your willingness to suffer for us, you showed us the meaning of love. Help us to love as you love. Through your gift of the Eucharist, you nourish our faith. Grant us the joy of sharing that faith with others.
