3 Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in every Catholic church to support the people and places of the Holy Land. Christians of the Holy Land rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special moment of the year. The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land. It is important that we care for the Christians living in the Holy Land in order to maintain a Christian presence in a land that is filled with a majority Jewish and Islamic population. The following activities are made possible through our generosity and are carried out by the Franciscan Friars who are directly charged with the care of our sacred Christian sites. Faith, Memory & Culture The Holy Places Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history. Social & Charitable Activities: In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy. Educational & Scientific Activities: The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or nationality. They provide scholarships for students to prepare them to get jobs and remain in the Holy Land as part of living Catholic communities. Funds are distributed to young men studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering historical artifacts. Pastoral Activities: The Franciscans provide pastoral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering Worship, Christian Formation, youth and family programs. And Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Programs: The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation. Last year s Good Friday Collection provided support for the Holy Land in these ways: Provided emergency funds to the people in Syria and Iraq, supported 29 parishes, four homes for orphans, three academic institutions; Helped keep 16 schools open for over 10,000 pre-k through grade 12 students; Funded university scholarships for 295 students; Provided 398 homes benefiting Christian families; Helped rehabilitate over 100 homes for Christians families; Provided senior care facilities in Bethlehem and Nazareth; Created more than 1,500 jobs in the Holy Land Preserved 74 sanctuaries and shrines from the life of Jesus and the prophets; Supported over 100 men preparing to be priests or brothers. Thank you for all of your past support for our Christian brothers and sisters who suffer daily for our faith. Their continued living witness to the message of Jesus in the Lands where he walked inspire countless millions to persist in the faith. Please be as generous as possible this Good Friday and pray for suffering Christians everywhere. Everything we know about the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus comes from Scripture and that has seemed too little for those who made up legends about him. We know he was a carpenter, a working man, for the skeptical Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "Is this not the carpenter's on?" (Mt 13:55). He wasn't rich for when he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb (Luke 2:24). Despite his humble work and means, Joseph came from a royal lineage. Luke and Matthew disagree some about the details of Joseph's genealogy but they both mark his descent from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38). Indeed the angel who first tells Joseph about Jesus greets him as "son of David," a royal title used also for Jesus. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probably had died before Jesus entered public ministry. Some Facts about the Scrutinies How many are celebrated? Three are always celebrated. Even with children of catechetical age. Only the Bishop may dispense from one for a serious obstacle or two in extraordinary circumstances. Pastoral reasons alone are not sufficient. When are they celebrated? Sundays Masses on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent are the proper days. When, for pastoral reasons these ritual Masses cannot be celebrated on their proper Sundays, they are celebrated on other Sundays of Lent or even convenient days during the week [RCIA, no. 146]. They may be celebrated outside Lent. This, however, requires permission of the Bishop in each instance. Everyone involved in liturgical ministry knows of the time and energy devoted to good celebration. Preaching is hard work and requires intensive preparation. The additional rites in Lent scrutinies and presentations with the elect, possible penitential rites with called candidates, celebrations of Penance, Stations of the Cross and other devotional prayers fill Lent with many extra duties and preparations.

Prayer Chalice for Vocations A Family Lenten Prayer Experience We are bringing back the program of family prayer for vocations with the prayer chalice. The purpose of the Chalice Program is to encourage families to pray and promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church. Each week at Mass, an assigned family is invited to take the gifts up at the Offertory Procession. At the end of Mass, the family is called by the priest to come forward to receive the chalice and a blessing. The family takes the chalice home and puts it in a place of honor. Each day for a week, during prayer time (morning, bedtime or at meals), the family prays for an increase and perseverance of vocations. If you are interested in hosting the vocation chalice for a week, please contact Fr. Joe or Donna Spoto.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio announced today that a comprehensive process of spiritual renewal will serve as a centerpiece of its evangelization efforts. This process, entitled ARISE Together in Christ, will be offered by RE- NEW International, and all parishes will have the opportunity to participate. Speaking on the announcement, Bishop DiMarzio remarked, RENEW s process represents a timely and well-suited response to Pope Francis call for a new evangelization. It provides an excellent means for bringing together clergy, parishioners, and all members of our Catholic community in an endeavor centered on the loving and healing message of Jesus Christ. ARISE Together in Christ offers a total renewal experience for the parish, spiritually transforming people through smallgroup faith sharing, materials for families with children, parish resources, and Christian social action. Because of the variety of ways in which people are engaged, ARISE fosters creating an evangelizing climate in the parish. Please plan to join us as we begin this program!
