2 August 26, 2018 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Parish News Q. The Catholic Church has been shaken by all the reports of sexual abuse by clergy recently released. Are there any statements we can refer to so as to be updated on what is happening? A. Certainly it has been a most difficult time for all of us who love the Catholic Church! There are no words to describe the feelings of anxiety, disappointment and shame that we are experiencing. We do the best we can to re-affirm our faith in the God who loves us; in Jesus, His Son, to whose church we are privileged to belong; and in the Holy Spirit, our consoler and guide. Without God we have no hope! For me, personally, these last few weeks have been very sad and let me tell you why. In my work as Vicar General and as Vicar of Clergy and Consecrated Life, I deal with the scars of sexual abuse that people bear on a daily basis. I am involved in the work of listening to victims of abuse as well as disciplining those who commit abuse. I ask for your prayers for me, and those I work with in our Chancery, that we can be the face of Christ to those we meet and reflect the compassion of Jesus to them. We try to be both just and merciful. Regarding statements - you can see on the next page the most recent statement of our Diocesan Bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio. If you go on our parish website, you will also find statements issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the recent letter of Pope Francis to all Catholics regarding Clergy Sexual Abuse. Again, no statement can ever completely or adequately express the sadness we feel. We need prayer, penance and repentance. We need to work together to make sure we expend every effort to repair the damage; rebuild the trust; and re-discover the message of Jesus and let it take root in our hearts. I have read and re-read the following passage. It helps me and I hope it helps you too. How much I must criticize you, my Church, and yet how much I love you. You have made me suffer more than anyone. I should like to see you destroyed and yet I need your presence. You have given me much scandal and yet you alone have me understand holiness. Never in this world have I seen anything more compromised, more false. Yet never have I touched anything more pure, more generous, or more beautiful. Countless times I have felt like slamming the door of my soul in your face; and yet every night, I have prayed that I might die in your arms. No, I can not be free of you, for I am one with you, even if not completely yours. Then too...where would I go? To build another Church? But I could not build one without the same defects, for they are my defects. And again, if I were to build another Church, it would be my Church, not Christ s Church. No. I am old enough, I know better. This piece was written by Carlo Carretto ( ), a religious author from the Congregation of the Little Brothers of the Gospel. In conclusion, join me in pledging to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration during this coming pastoral year to do penance and reparation; to seek the Lord s mercy and forgiveness; to grow in faith and holiness. This week s question was the most profound question I have received so far. Please accept my long, but sincere, attempt to answer it.

This has prevented us from going as a parish team to be with the children and young adults of Mustard Seed Communities this year.
