I am encouraged that as of this weekend 285 donors have given $81,491 to the 2018 ACA. ALTAR CARE Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for Vocation The celebration of the Eucharist is at the center of parish life. We are a Eucharistic Community. Liturgical Ministers assist the priest and community in this celebration Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Music Ministers, Altar Servers. Yet, we often overlook another important ministry which we are extremely grateful for those who care for the altar linens. Although not seen at the liturgy itself, these women keep the altar linens clean and worthy of use at the altar. They wash and iron linens and keep them in good condition. These dedicated women are always looking for volunteers. Their ministry is done at home, taking the soiled linens and returning them to the sacristy ready for use. Would you like to help this important ministry? Give the rectory a call and ask for Theresa. Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and the laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told your Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. 5 MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. PARISH BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meet on TUESDAY, September 4th at 7 PM in the Pastoral Center. This group usually meets on the First Tuesday of the month in the St. Matthew Room in our Pastoral Center. This group provides emotional assistance for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. If you are interested in participating in these meetings please contact Sister Theresa at (718) Sister also offers individual Bereavement Counseling Sessions where needed. Please remember to pray for all who are grieving the loss of loved ones. 6 RECTORY OFFICE HOURS SUMMER SCHEDULE Beginning Sunday, July 1st, the Rectory Office will begin a summer schedule for office hours. Please note the following: Monday - Thursday 9:00am - 5:00pm (Closed for lunch from 12 noon to 1:00pm) Friday the Rectory Office is closed. Saturday - 9:00am - 3:00pm Sunday the Rectory Office is closed. Emergency sick calls requiring a priest can be made at any time by calling the Rectory. Please call ahead to make an appointment with a priest for any other needs. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We will return to normal Rectory Office hours on Tuesday, September 4th. Just a Reminder... No meetings will take place during the summer months of July and August. All meetings of parish organizations, groups, prayer groups and societies will resume after Labor Day During the months of July & August, there will be only one weekday Mass at 12 noon (Monday-Friday). The church will be closed after the 12 noon Mass Monday through Friday. There will be no changes to the Saturday and Sunday Mass schedules. 5

Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m followed by dinner and dancing. This year the Congregation is proud to honor Al Roker, NBC's Meteorologist, and S. Ave Clark, author and founder of the Heart to Heart Ministry in Bayside, NY. The Dominican Gala raises critical funds to support the ministries of the Sisters of St. Dominic. Next weekend, August 18 & 19 there will be a SECOND COLLECTION for the Support of Catholic Education. This weekend, August 11 & 12 there will be a SECOND COLLECTION for Air Conditioning To help keep our church comfortable during the Summer. As always we thank you for your continuous support and generosity. Are you a registered Parishioner? If you wish to register as a parishioner of St. Luke Church, please stop by the Rectory Office during regular office hours. There you can pick up a census card which can be filled out at that time or returned by mail or in the Sunday Collection Basket. You can even download the Census card online. 8 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday August 20 September 17 September 9 & 23 October 15 October 14 & 28 November 12 November 11 & 18 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. 9 CONSOLATION MINISTRY Our Consolation Ministry at St. Luke offers assistance to families who are preparing to bury a loved one by guiding them through the process of planning the Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated for the deceased, and attending the funeral mass in support of the family. We are fortunate to have a devoted group of Consolation Ministers whose compassion is a great comfort to the families grieving the loss of loved ones. We are in need of additional parishioners to assist in our Consolation Ministry so we ask that anyone interested in more information about this very important ministry or in joining the ministry please call Sister Theresa at (718) We are in need of adult altar servers to assist at the Funerals. 12 WHAT IS A CATECHIST A catechist is faith, hope, and love attached to arms and legs, aches and pains, family duties, and not enough time. A catechist is an ordinary person who is extraordinary because he or she teaches as Jesus did. A catechist is faithful to the past, open to the future, and is especially dedicated to deepening the faith of the present. From the poem A Catechist Is, by Monsignor John Francis Murphy The word catechist comes from the Greek word meaning to echo. Catechists echo the Word of God to our parish children. They come from all walks of life and all ages: women, men, college students, parents, grandparents, singles, and religious. Catechists are not expert teachers or brilliant theologians. They are ordinary people, just like you, who generously volunteer their time to share our Catholic faith, values, and traditions with our youngest generation of Christians. They are positive role models who help children grow in faith and spirituality. What an important ministry! Their gift has tremendous value.because through their words and actions, the message of Christ continues to spread throughout the world. Here at St. Luke Church, our catechist are the heart of OUR Religious Education Program. We sincerely appreciate their gifts of time, talent and service.
