1 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish March 10, 2019 MISSION STATEMENT We Worship ~ We Teach ~ We Care 5112 Pocono Crest Road PO Box O Pocono Pines, PA Mass Schedule: Saturday 4:00 pm Sunday 8:00 am & 10:30 am Saturday Confessions 3:00 pm

2 March 10, st Sunday of Lent Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. ~Lk 4:1-2 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend Sean G. Carpenter ~ Pastor Deacon Frank Gisoldi Deacon Tom Amoroso Melissa Laverty Pastoral Associate ~ St.MaxMelissa@outlook.com Coordinator of Religious Education John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net Visit us on the Pope Francis reminds us that Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ s victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Lent is the favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ who lives in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor. Once again Lent comes to make its prophetic appeal, to remind us that it is possible to create something new within ourselves and around us. At the basis of everything is the Word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply. G O S P E L M E D I T A T I O N As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we're reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday's Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pretentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own. "Turn these stones to bread." Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It's the simplest of temptations because it's instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don't serve the higher good for our souls. The leap "from the temple parapet" would entice the eye of the person watching. A feat like this would prove Jesus' Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To "bow and worship" the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God? When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it's not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too.

Excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Life and Abortion The moment a positive law deprives a category of human beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to accord them, the state is denying the equality of all before the law. When the state does not place its power at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundations of a state based on law are undermined... As a consequence of the respect and protection which must be ensured for the unborn child from the moment of conception, the law must provide appropriate penal sanctions for every deliberate violation of the child's rights. ~ CDF, Donum vitae III. As a young girl, she felt called to the religious life. However, she received advice to marry instead. Her husband died 12 years into their marriage. In the wake of her husband's death, she met St. Vincent de Paul. She was greatly inspired by his work with the poor, and he became her spiritual director. She began a training center out of her own home to train other young woman to serve the poor and sick. This became the Sisters of Charity. The religious order began to grow, as slowly more sisters joined to work in hospitals and orphanages across France. The Sisters of Charity now serve worldwide. When your life takes an unexpected turn, consider where God might be calling you! The St. Max Activities Committee has the following events planned for all! Sunday, April 7th, 2019 at 12 p.m. Lunch with Fr. Sean June Trip to State Capital in Harrisburg (date and time TBA) September Trip to Winery (date, time, location TBA) November Trip to Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes (date and time TBA) INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK.. Temptation is a part of our lives. Even Jesus wrestled with temptation. Our faith tells us that we are meant to live our lives in service of God's kingdom. Yet, we often find ourselves pursuing our own desires rather than God's. The Gospel clearly tells us that true power is found in the embrace of virtue - living lives of non-violence, mercy, and forgiveness. Yet, we still are not convinced and seek things that will hurt us and retaliate against those who harm us. When Jesus faced temptation, he found security in who he was, which firmly rooted him in his mission and gave him the determination to trust in God. We, too, must learn to find security in our identity as a son or daughter of God, to live out our mission rooted in that truth, and to be confident in God's abiding presence. RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS It will take too long. I can't spare it. I don't know anybody. I am just too busy. How many excuses can you think of to put forth as reasons why you should say no to the call of Jesus Christ? Wait. You didn't know to whom those responses were directed? We say no to many things and many people, but we wouldn't say no to Jesus. Really? During this Lenten season, like all the other seasons, we will be asked to respond in many different ways. There will be fasting, almsgiving, and abstinence from certain foods. There will be invitations to various devotions and formational studies. We will be asked to reflect on our faith and then dive deeper. The argument will be made by some that many of these things are being asked of us by others and not Jesus. Of course, that will just be another excuse like those above. For every calling upon us comes with a temptation to take the easy way out or to minimize the value of the request. We will stay caught up in an endless cycle of excuses that lead us nowhere. That is unless we simply choose to stop the madness and say YES! This Lent, give up and give in. Let God take over as you surrender all you are and have to Him. Now is the time to turn to Jesus. No more excuses. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Do You Want to Know More About the Annulment Process?: In the Diocese of Scranton, the annulment process is now more user friendly than you might expect, and there is no longer a processing fee. Please contact your pastor or the Diocesan Tribunal Office ( ) to begin a conversation. It is possible to get clear answers to these questions and to renew your connection with the Church. Around The Diocese Clymer Library Distribution in March Elaine Madere is accepting essential household items - dishes, glasses in sets, eating utensils, pots and pans, cooking utensils, microwaves, small kitchen appliances, knives, can openers, corning ware dishes, containers with tops, towels, shower curtains, throw rugs, bed pillows, comforters, sheets, blankets, lamps and window curtains. She no longer takes clothing, baby items, furniture. She will begin distribution at the Clymer library in March. If you have donations or know someone in need: contact Elaine at or elaine_madere@yahoo.com Throughout the Book of Deuteronomy, and in today's reading, Moses reminds the Israelites of how God was present throughout their history. Moses instructed Israel to make a sacrificial offering to the Lord God in thanksgiving. As we begin the season of Lent, how will you show gratitude to the Lord? Following the directive of the Diocese of Scranton, we have suspended the use of the Chalice to help protect us from the flu and other illness. We will resume sharing in the Precious Blood when the Diocese suggests. Anyone who needs to receive communion from the chalice alone out of medical necessity is asked to speak to Father Sean prior to the start of mass.
