3 Pastor s Notes The reading from Joshua bring us to the happy moment when the Israelites enter the Promised Land for the first time after their escape from enslavement in Egypt. It became a 40-year journey because of their disobedience. Joshua, showing Moses power of God by parting the Jordan river, shows his continuity with the leader whom he replaced. The disgrace mentioned here was their failure to follow Mosaic Law. Now they celebrate the Passover for the first time. They also have the opportunity to lead the nations to the one true God who were occupying this land. Some of the Pharisees of Jesus time try to reject God s vision to save all as opposed to just practicing Jews. Jesus was more severe with those who condemned sinners with disdain than He was with sinners themselves. The two sons represent two immature ways of relating to God, rebellion and infantile obedience. Jesus will show that these attitudes can only be overcome by repentance to experience God s mercy. This parable has been a constant favorite theme of Pope Francis. God s mercy is greater than our misery which we experience by our own sinfulness. It transforms us so that we can love the sinner, but not the sin. It helps us to see the image and likeness of God especially in the one who offends us. This is why Jesus is eating with sinners. He is working on them to repent and join Him at the Messianic Banquet. The prodigal son, seeing his misery, finally repents of his sins. Yes, he learned the hard way, but he sees his error and seeks forgiveness from his father with the hope of returning to him in a humbling capacity. Much to the prodigal son s surprise, he is welcomed back with pity and joy. This shows God s reckless and extravagant abandonment when it comes to forgiveness of a repentant sinner and why the angels in Heaven rejoice. It is like the Sacrament of Baptism where all sins are forgiven or the Sacrament of Reconciliation where post-baptismal sins are forgiven. It is truly a new creation. The elder son is self-righteous and is unforgiving and because of this, he refuses to enter the Banquet. After all, he kept all the commandments as if he kept a score card that would demand his entrance into Heaven with his cold heart. His pride prevents him from entering Heaven. He cannot comprehend a father s love for his two sons. Scripture Meditation Psalm 37:7 - Be still before the LORD; wait for Him. Do not be provoked by the prosperous, nor by malicious schemers. This Psalm teaches us to patiently wait for God. In this modern fast paced world of multi-tasking, locked into our media devices and being the busy individuals, we often find ourselves seeking and waiting for our Lord difficult. We can t sit quietly and wait. This is because we are humans seeking to live according to our own timetables and schedules and not God's. By nature we are impatient creatures and some more than others. Patience is not only a virtue, but God also instructs us to be patient. We know what we want and we know exactly when we want it and in most cases it s NOW. Instant gratification, no waiting. God, however, knows better for us. He has created a world that unfolds according to His plans and on His timeline, not ours. As His Disciples, we must put our trust in His wisdom and goodness. God instructs us to be patient in all things. The most difficult is to be patient with those that are closest to us, like our families, our friends and our associates, but we must work harder at being with them. We must also be patient with our Lord as He unfolds His plans for us. If it helps, think how patient our Lord is with us! The meetings will be held on Monday evenings, in the rectory (basement office) at 6:30PM for a duration of 6 weeks. Bus Trip to Sight & Sound Hosted by Church of Epiphany, Brick, NJ Church of Epiphany s Religious Education department is hosting a bus trip to see Jesus at Sight & Sound on September 21st, The trip includes: round trip transportation, theater ticket (orchestra seating) and a buffet lunch at Good & Plenty Restaurant. The cost is $155 for adults (13 & up) and $105 for children Payment in full is due upon reservation. Please call Michele Evans at Seder Meal Passover Celebration Date: Wednesday, April 10th, 2019, at 7:00PM Celebrating the Seder Meal is a traditional and most pleasant form of fellowship and shared learning experience. It is a meal that not only commemorates the Jews deliverance but also hope for the coming kingdom of God. It draws relationships between the Passover and important New Testament truths.
