Isaiah 56:1 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Thus says the LORD: Stand firm in justice; do what is right (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7). Psalm O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). All we ask is that you have your picture taken by the professional photographer and meet with a portrait consultant at the church. There is no obligation to buy anything, but you will have the opportunity to purchase portraits, should you choose. All families who get their picture taken get 1 free photo and 1 copy of the Directory. Your participation is appreciated. MOVIE NIGHT The Next Movie Night will be on August 28 featuring the movie: Pope John Paul II, a true story. All students are invited to participate in the Conservatory s program of recitals held throughout the year. Private study on a musical instrument is a rewarding endeavor that offers an appreciation for the arts, while teaching a wide range of skills including hand-eye coordination, selfdiscipline and time management. Registrations for are now being accepted. Registering in the Fall applies to the full school year. The fall payment is due with the registration form. Parents will be billed in December for the spring payment. Most students should be able to attend 30 to 32 lessons out of the 36-week school year, beginning the week of Tuesday, September 2, This number is determined by counting the weeks in the school year and omitting school holidays and field trips. For more information, please call Sr. Stella at IGNATIAN SPIRITUAL EXERCISES in Daily Life We take bodily exercises to strengthen our muscles, the blood circulation, the good functioning of the heart and so on. Similarly we make the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life to strengthen the faculties of our soul, our mind, our will, as well as to deepen our faith in God and our relationship with God. These exercises are offered to people who are unable to set aside a stretch of 8 days or 30 days to make the long Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, but are willing to devote some 30 minutes a day for their spiritual well-being through gospel meditation, reflection, prayer and journaling. 6 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 6 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time GOD S LOVE FOR ALL PEOPLE Following their exile to Babylon, the people of Israel came home to find other banished people living in Israel. It was, therefore, not uncommon for foreigners to attempt to come to the Temple to worship. In the reading from Isaiah, the Jewish people are urged to welcome the foreigners and encourage their worship, for it was clearly the understanding of the author of Isaiah that everyone would be redeemed. The Jewish people had a strong sense of what was right and wrong and how to live just lives. This did not mean they had to embrace the religions of others, only to accept the people themselves and recognize that they and all people were entitled to God s salvation. Paul s Epistle to the Romans is equally evangelizing. He states that his ministry and God s love stretch out to all people, not just the Israelites. Frustrated at times with the Jewish people s rejection and refusal to listen, Paul turned to the Gentiles. All people, Paul explains, have sinned against God. Only because of our disobedience can God show love and mercy for all people. God loves us, and without exclusion each human being can claim the gift of salvation. SALVATION FOR ALL More severe than the other readings, the Gospel nonetheless asserts that salvation is for all people. It is the amazing and intense faith of the Canaanite woman that catches our attention in the Gospel. The disciples saw her as a nuisance and someone to remove from Jesus presence. Jesus clearly considered his mission at this point particularly to the Israelites. Yet the woman knew that Jesus could heal her daughter and God s healing is, indeed, for all of us. The woman was so sure of Jesus and God s love that she recognized that something greater than crumbs would come someday to those outside the Jewish faith. Each of us in our own calling is challenged to multiply and supplement the crumbs generously, making a nourishing meal to show all people of the world God s great love.
