4 LATIN MASS The traditional Latin Mass also known as Tridentine Mass will be offered on a provisionary period starting with its first Mass this Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 7:15 PM and every third Sunday of each month thereafter for three months after which it will be assessed. Luke 9:23 June 20, 2010 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Zec 12:10 11; 13:1 / Gal 3:26 29 / Lk 9:18 24 If you were old enough to understand the news when it happened, you probably remember where and how you heard about the disaster of 9/11. Some of us are old enough to have a similar connection to the time and place where we found ourselves stunned by the Challenger explosion. Some of us have the same recollections about the assassination of President Kennedy. News that big, news that changes our world, seems to crack open our awareness so that we see things differently. We cannot make sense of what is in front of us. But we see everything clearly, deliberately. What went through people s minds when they heard Jesus preach that the reign of God was near? He asks his disciples, what are people saying? The answers they give are remarkable. Everyone knew John the Baptizer was dead. He d crossed Herod, who had him killed. Yet some connected Jesus to him. Could John, who was dead, actually come back? Others thought Elijah had returned. They knew Elijah to be a prophet so great that he had been taken up into heaven without dying. His return meant Israel would be restored. Something is in the air. Something huge is happening around Jesus. Expectations and speculations are running deep. Everyone stumbles to explain him. And the disciples, the ones who knew Jesus the best? Peter speaks for them when he declares you are the Messiah of God. Jesus rebuked them and directed them tell no one. No one is going to get this. And no explanation can handle what is going to happen next. The Son of Man has to suffer and die. No one expected a Messiah to do that. And no one expected Jesus, the Messiah, to rise again. 5 As FAZ, as you can! By Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy Father s Day! After our celebration of Fathers Week, or Week for the Priests, we continue our celebration for our fathers, a day for our dads. This day should remind us to honor them everyday. And this is not a request; it is a command, a commandment from God. This is a day to be proud of our dads. An Army brat was boasting about his father to a Navy brat. "My dad is an engineer. He can do everything. Do you know the Alps?" "Yes," said the Navy brat. "My dad has built them." Then the naval kid spoke: "And do you know the Dead Sea?" "Yes." "It's my dad who's killed it!" The way to honor our dads is to make them proud of us their children. I received the greatest compliment from my dad a week before he died. While he was lying on his hospital bed, I asked him this question: Did I ever make you proud? With teary eyed he replied: All the time! Of course, there were times that my dad was frustrated with me, got mad at me, but it didn t mean he was not proud of me. He was never proud of my mistakes, my failures, or any wrongdoings. He was always proud of me, not of what I am but of who I am. I was always his son, despite my shortcomings and limitations. Though not every person is a dad, every person is created with a dad. Every person can also make his or her dad proud. If I can, you also can as FAZ as you can! It was a week-long celebration for our fathers-priests at Holy Name. I also have a long list of people who have aided us in so many ways to make each activity a great success. They certainly deserve our highest praise and gratitude: to the parishioners and friends who took out the Holy Name Rectory resident priests for dinner; to the referees and sports people who officiated in our basketball games with our school students; continued next column. As FAZ, as you can! continued to the Sidecos and friends who served meals for the priests; to those who prayed for us at the Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration; to the Senior Club who served lunch; to the people behind the success of the Sacerdos in Aeternum concert, including the donors and sponsors; and especially to Manzel dela Cruz, the coordinator, and to Jeanette Vives, the Creative director A big thank you to all of you! Your individual names may not appear in this column but know that they are written in my heart and in God s Book of Life. THANK YOU FROM THE HOMEBOUND MINISTRY Sr. Herminia and the Homebound Mass Committee wish to thank all who volunteered to help with the Homebound Mass on Saturday, June 12, There were many, many hands at work who we will not list individually anymore you know who you are. I would like to thank the Homebound committee for coordinating all the activities that make this celebration possible. These include those who set-up and decorate, the drivers, the Sacristans, the kitchen crew, the Lectors, those who donated food, the youth and the Welcome Committee. Special thanks to Fr. Arnold. Our celebration of the Eucharist can never be as joyful and festive without Tony Eiras and the choir s music. As always, our thanks to Jackie and Colleen for all their administrative help. A Prayer for Priests O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with your Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Your Holy Love surround them and shield them from the world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and in heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen. - St. Therese of Lisieux

6 THANK YOU We wish to thank our visiting priests from the San Francisco Archdiocese for celebrating the closing of the Year for Priests with us last week. Thank you for giving us the gift of song and priestly love with the Singing Priests Concert on Friday, June 11, and for donating the proceeds to the Holy Name Pipe Organ Restoration Project. It was truly a fun and faith-filled week! SAINT JOHN FISHER ( ) AND SAINT THOMAS MORE ( ) June 22 From Robert Bolt s classic A Man For All Seasons to Showtime s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears himself still: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remarried widower and affectionate father delighting in a lively household four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jester! And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him Patron of Statesmen and Politicians, citing More s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poorest and most marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion of education for all sectors of society. More s decision for principle over politics, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: I die the King s good servant, but God s first. Alone among England s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII s divorce and repudiation of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: Don t bother sending Fisher s red hat here; I ll send Fisher s head to Rome! Whose good servants are we first? Isn t a right conscience worth the pain of standing alone? WHO DO YOU SAY? In today s Gospel Jesus asks his disciples, Who do you say that I am? (Luke 9:20). Only Peter has the courage to state outright that Jesus is the Messiah the anointed one of God. Jesus question is one that we have to answer at some point for ourselves if we are to truly live as his disciples today. It is easy to avoid a direct answer, to rely on what someone else has said about Jesus, or just to follow the rules and say the right prayers for years on end, without ever stopping to face this question squarely. Marianne lives in a small-town parish. She says she never thought this question was for her until one day it came up in a Bible study group. I d read or heard this passage so many times before, but on this particular day it was as if I were hearing it for the very first time. As I drove home, I knew deep in my heart that I had to acknowledge Jesus as the one whom God had sent into this world for me. And, she continued, I knew that if I accepted Jesus as the Lord of my life, there would be consequences! This started Marianne on a new path. She found a wise and experienced spiritual director and began reviewing her life. I used to tease one of my friends who wore a What would Jesus do? bracelet, she said, but suddenly I knew that this is a question that I ll be asking myself all the time now. Her life s challenges haven t vanished overnight: Marianne cares for her elderly mother and copes with diabetes, but she says, I trust in God much more these days, and God s blessing is that I m so much more openhearted and openhanded with other people than ever before.
