ALTAR CARE Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for Vocation The celebration of the Eucharist is at the center of parish life. We are a Eucharistic Community. Liturgical Ministers assist the priest and community in this celebration Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Music Ministers, Altar Servers. Yet, we often overlook another important ministry which we are extremely grateful for those who care for the altar linens. Although not seen at the liturgy itself, these women keep the altar linens clean and worthy of use at the altar. They wash and iron linens and keep them in good condition. These dedicated women are always looking for volunteers. Their ministry is done at home, taking the soiled linens and returning them to the sacristy ready for use. Would you like to help this important ministry? Give the rectory a call and ask for Theresa. Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and the laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told your Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. 6 RECTORY OFFICE HOURS SUMMER SCHEDULE Beginning Sunday, July 1st, the Rectory Office will begin a summer schedule for office hours. Please note the following: Monday - Thursday 9:00am - 5:00pm (Closed for lunch from 12 noon to 1:00pm) Friday the Rectory Office is closed. Saturday - 9:00am - 3:00pm Sunday the Rectory Office is closed. Emergency sick calls requiring a priest can be made at any time by calling the Rectory. Please call ahead to make an appointment with a priest for any other needs. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We will return to normal Rectory Office hours on Tuesday, September 4th. Just a Reminder... No meetings will take place during the summer months of July and August. All meetings of parish organizations, groups, prayer groups and societies will resume after Labor Day During the months of July & August, there will be only one weekday Mass at 12 noon (Monday-Friday). The church will be closed after the 12 noon Mass Monday through Friday. There will be no changes to the Saturday and Sunday Mass schedules. 5

7 COLLECTIONS July 29-July 30 Weekly Collection $ 9,277 Envelopes Mailed 1,964 Amount Needed Weekly $ 13,425 Envelopes Received 618 ORIGIN OF THE FIRST FRIDAY CLUB On Friday, October 5th, 2018 the Flushing First Friday Club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. It was started by a group of business men in Flushing who felt the need of attending Mass on the First Friday of each month, to honor the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. They would attend Mass and then have lunch and invite a guest speaker. It was at the visitation at Paray in France over a period of 17 years that Our Lord appeared to Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque one of the visitation Nuns. During these apparitions he made known his desire to have established in the Church, his devotion to his Sacred Heart and that specific request and promise would be filled. Mass and lunch is held at Verdi s Restaurant in Whitestone and a quest speaker, religious or laity from neighboring Parishes are invited. These wonderful guest speakers have instilled in us much wisdom and informative narratives. If you are interested in joining ($10.00 dues for the year) please contact Marie Heaney at or Kay Andreucci at Are you a registered Parishioner? If you wish to register as a parishioner of St. Luke Church, please stop by the Rectory Office during regular office hours. There you can pick up a census card which can be filled out at that time or returned by mail or in the Sunday Collection Basket. You can even download the Census card online. 8 BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday August 20 August 12 (Only 1 Baptism date in August.) September 17 September 9 & 23 October 15 October 14 & 28 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. 9 CONSOLATION MINISTRY Our Consolation Ministry at St. Luke offers assistance to families who are preparing to bury a loved one by guiding them through the process of planning the Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated for the deceased, and attending the funeral mass in support of the family. We are fortunate to have a devoted group of Consolation Ministers whose compassion is a great comfort to the families grieving the loss of loved ones. We are in need of additional parishioners to assist in our Consolation Ministry so we ask that anyone interested in more information about this very important ministry or in joining the ministry please call Sister Theresa at (718) We are in need of adult altar servers to assist at the Funerals. 14 SAINT LUKE S PURGATORIAL SOCIETY Enrollment Mass cards for your deceased relatives and friends may be purchased in the Rectory Office. The enrollment is for one year from the date of enrollment. Mass is celebrated every Sunday at 1:00 pm for those enrolled in the Society. The offering for enrollment is $15. Each month the names of the deceased who were enrolled in the Society (from the previous month) will be published in the bulletin.
