PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The Parish of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is a Roman Catholic community of the disciples of Jesus Christ called together by the Holy Spirit to worship and serve God our Father. Alert to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we proclaim our Faith and enrich our members spiritually through the Sacred Liturgy as we educate them in our Religious Tradition. Cherishing the heritage we have received from dedicated clergy, religious, and parishioners who came before us, we encourage one another to place our gifts at the service of the Kingdom of God as good stewards. As men and women of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds we welcome everyone as we invite new members to join our parish family. We strive to provide an atmosphere of acceptance in which each member feels recognized and valued, as we cooperate with our neighbors in the community to promote the common good. Together we face the future with our hope anchored in Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

3 September 27th, 2015 Page 3 Parish News 12 NY Catholic High School students chosen to meet Pope Danielle Armato has for years been a faithful altar server, especially each Saturday evening. Now she is a senior at Cathedral High School in Manhattan. Along with a number of other teenage seniors from various Catholic high schools throughout the city she has been chosen to be presented to Pope Francis in his visit to New York on Friday, September 25th. She has been interviewed by newspapers, periodicals, t.v. and continues to reap the benefit of being faithful to the Church as a practicing member of OLMM parish community. I know her family, friends, and all of us are very proud of her. If you visit the newspapers, you can read her interviews and her own assessment of this momentous occasion in her life. Our best wishes and continued support are with her in the network of the Catholic family of which she is so much a part of. God Bless you Danielle. Fr. Anthony J. Sansone Annual Catholic Appeal We are nearing our assigned goal of $50,000 and we need your help. Our parish community consists of 1075 families. Out of this total, 159 families (14.79% of registered parishioners) are participating in the ACA. In the past the percentages have been much higher. The church realizes the hardship people are enduring these days, but we also rely on your generosity to meet our obligations. So, please be as generous as possible. If you can not make a pledge, a one time donation would be greatly appreciated. All money received over the goal will be returned to our parish. Envelopes are available in the pamphlet racks at the doors of the Church. We are very grateful to the parishioners who have already responded. God bless you Parishioners for your loyalty and sacrificial giving to sustain the parish and to attain our parish goal. God bless you for your generosity and sacrificial giving every week and especially for supporting the Bishop s Annual Catholic Appeal. Queensboro Symphony Orchestra Sunday 9/27/15 at 7pm Admission is free - will offering. St. Mary s Nativity Church Parsons Blvd. (at Holly Ave.), Flushing 11355, (718) St. Padre Pio Mass and Procession in honor of St. Padre Pio, today, Sunday, September 27th at St. Pancras Church at 4pm. The annual bi-lingual Italian/ English Mass is followed by a procession through the streets of Glendale. Everyone is invited. 4 Page 4 September 27th, 2015 Confirmation Retreat Day at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston One of the events I look forward to each year is the day of prayer and retreat for the Confirmation candidates this past Friday 9/18/15. In a day such as this I unite myself in prayer and reflection with the candidates and the priests who are with us. This year the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Brother Seamus and Fr. Ignatius gave the talks which contributed to the theme of the day based on the continued search for God even after full initiation. The weather was beautiful and contributed to a spiritually successful day for all of us. I am also grateful to Msgr. Schuster and Fr. Johny who joined us for the day helping to hear confessions and concelebrating at Mass. My gratitude to the Confirmation instructors: Donnalisa Miller, Susan Airchinger, Charlie Riggio and Henry Macchiaroli. 5 September 27th, 2015 Page 5 The Visit The historic encounter between Pope Francis and this hemisphere beginning with Cuba and then the United States is indicative of many things. Some could say that it is motivated by politics, others by the social media which seems to form the thought patterns of many people, others may break it down to economics based on the disproportion of wealth between those who have and those who don t have. There is no doubt that some of these items may have entered into the scenario of this past week. However, there are a couple of factors which determine what Pope Francis is about and what he wishes to accomplish in the days he spent from Havana, to Washington, to New York and Philadelphia. Primarily this is a Pope who rejects and abhors being used as a political pawn by the political powers of any nation. He has already made this known to the leaders with whom he has dialogued with in the past week. Since this is known, it is important for Castro and Obama to be careful of their dialogue and any hint of political manipulation. Secondly, Pope Francis has come to visit the Church in these respective countries as a servant and pastor and to see the Gospel proclaimed even in climates that are contrary to the message of Jesus the Christ. Also, moral issues are sometimes even more explosive than political or social themes if only because they touch the hearts of everyday people and how we live. Needless to say, the moral issues in our country which have taken on legal status in recent months from the Supreme Court and making it the law of the land runs contrary to the message of Christianity. A country such as the United States where freedom is greatly valued protects the rights and thinking of every individual. However, at the heart of Pope Francis message to uphold human dignity and human rights to the upmost is the central theme of his visit. This can only be understood with the Truth of where humanity lies in the overall perspective of God s saving plan. This can only be understood if the men and women see themselves held to the nobility of having a soul and being created in the image and likeness of God. If this be the case, then perhaps we can better understand the context from which the Holy Father comes to us and proclaims a message which challenges our conscience and opens us to the Spirit of God intent to make us fully human and fully alive.
