2 Thirty- Third Sunday In Ordinary Time November 15, 2015 First Reading: Daniel 12:1-3 Daniel discusses the end of the world, a time when the dead shall rise and everyone will be judged. He warns that some shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace. But he promises that some will live forever, and the wise will shine brightly to lead others to justice. Second Reading: Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 Priests repeatedly offered sacrifices that were unable to take away sin. But through Jesus one sacrifice, our sins were forgiven, leaving no need for other offerings. Gospel: Mark 13:24-32 Jesus told his disciples that many signs would be seen before the end of the world. He explained that the earth would pass away but his words would not. He also told them that neither the angels nor himself, but only his Father knew when this would take place. 3 PARISH THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23RD 7:30 PM Our Parish Thanksgiving Service will be held in the church beginning at 7:30 PM. It will be co-sponsored by our two biggest parish groups, the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) families and our CYO basketball families. The event is geared to all of our parishioners, both individuals and families, young and not so young alike. In a world where so many have so little while we enjoy so much, many of us may wish to set aside some quality time to be together as a faith community in order to give honor, glory and THANKS to God for the many blessings we enjoy every day. We thank God for the gifts of Faith, Hope and Love, especially the love we share with God and our family members and friends. We give thanks for the gifts of food and drink, clothing and shelter, quality medical care and top notch education for our children. We give special thanks for living in America, the land of opportunity, where we enjoy religious liberty, freedom of speech and more rights and privileges than people in most parts of the world could ever imagine or will ever know. Our parish family service will begin with some of our school children processing around the church with special homemade posters and drawings depicting what they believe to be the spirit of Gratitude or Thanksgiving. We will then have our Liturgy of the Word with select scripture readings and a brief homily. This will be followed by a procession of gifts to the altar as our adults and children bring forth food or monetary offerings for the less fortunate of our community. When I was hungry, when I was thirsty.whatsoever you did for the least of my loved ones that you did unto me. Our choir members will also be present to lead us in songs appropriate to the occasion. Following our Thanksgiving service, everyone is invited over to the gym to break bread with our parish family and enjoy the bounty of our sharing table laden with homemade and other offerings brought in by all of you who will be participating in the celebration. If possible, please drop off your sharing table donations (hot & cold hors d oeuvres, finger food, baked goods such as pies, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, etc. before the service. Meanwhile, please save the date! Many thanks to PREP Coordinator Marie Gartner and CYO Director, Kieran McCormack and his Executive Committee and all of our volunteers who will be working together on this wonderful parish-wide event. ANNOUNCED MASSES 2016 The 2016 Daily Mass Book is now open and available for scheduling. We are sorry, but we are unable to schedule Masses over the telephone. The stipend is $15 per Mass. Sunday Masses are now open and the stipend is $25. The Sanctuary Lamp is limited to three requests per family. We will also be offering announced intentions for the Body and Blood of Christ. The intention will be for the entire week. If you have any questions, please, call the Rectory at during regular business hours. Memorializing the Altar Wine & Hosts for Sunday and weekday masses is also an option. The name of the person being memorialized will be printed in the Sunday bulletin each week. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS This year, we are hoping to present the parish with a spectacular floral and evergreen display in our church. Your donations will help make this possible. Last weekend got us off to a great start. If you haven t yet done so, you may place your Christmas Flower Offering Envelope in the contribution basket on ANY Sunday before Christmas Day. As in the past, your Christmas Flower Offering Envelope, memorializing the names of family members and friends will be placed on the altar throughout the Christmas Season. ST. AEDAN S SVDP FOOD PANTRY Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This weekend, our parish Food Pantry is collecting donations of TURKEY BREASTS, HAMS, or FROZEN LASAGNAS along with the usual Thanksgiving Holiday fix' ins. Besides the usual cranberry sauce & stuffing, we need fresh potatoes, white & sweet, canned fruit and vegetables. White and Brown Rice Puddings, Apple & Cranberry Juice, Aluminum Foil & Pans, Vegetable oil and Gravy of all kinds. Cleaning products, dish soap, sponges, dish towels are always needed, too. In general, if your family eats or uses it, so do ours. Our families that depend on you all year long are most grateful for your generosity. Forgot? That s o.k.we will be collecting again on Sunday, November 22nd between 11AM and 1PM in the Pantry at 3 Reld Drive, for anyone who was not ready for this weekend's collection. Your generosity will help our families as well as Catholic Charities Community Services in Haverstraw. We are most grateful. SHARING YOUR GIFTS CAMPAIGN A gentle reminder that in order for our Sharing Our Gifts program to remain successful over the long run, we need every parishioner to make a conscious effort to ensure that his or her ongoing, weekly, commitment gets turned in or mailed in every week. Some of you are already in the practice of doubling up whenever you miss a week for any reason. We realize, also, that some of you may find it more convenient to contribute bi-weekly or even once a month. WELCOME CYO BASKETBALL FAMILIES We, at Saint Aedan s, would like to emphasize the Catholic nature of our CYO basketball program by beginning our new season by having our coaches, players and their families attend our Sunday 10 a.m. Family Mass. This Sunday, November 15th, we welcome our grade 6-8 players and their families. Following Mass, the players and their families will enjoy a light breakfast over in the parish hall. MUSIC MINISTRY - A TREASURE OF THE CHURCH The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy. Holy Scripture, indeed, has bestowed praise upon sacred song, and the same may be said of the fathers of the Church and of the Roman pontiffs who in recent times, led by St. Pius X, have explained more precisely the ministerial function supplied by sacred music in the service of the Lord. Liturgical worship is given a more noble form when the divine offices are celebrated solemnly in song, with the assistance of sacred ministers and the active participation of the people. CATHOLIC WIDOW AND WIDOWERS CLUB The club will be meeting on November 15th at 6:30 PM at St. Augustine s Church (downstairs). Dessert and coffee will be served. Guests are welcome. PARISH CHRISTMAS CARDS Each year, many of us enjoy exchanging religious cards containing faith-filled messages. Try as we might, we often find it difficult to find attractive, tasteful, religious cards which reflect the kind of message we would like to send to family members, friends and neighbors at Christmas time. Good news! This year, our parish will be offering boxes of custom designed, religious Christmas cards depicting the beautiful stained glass windows of our own parish church. There will be a variety of four different cards each depicting a part of the story of Christmas. Many thanks to our resident photographer, Bob Reers, for providing us with such beautiful photos of our stained glass windows. Stay tuned for further information in upcoming bulletins. HOSPITAL VISITS TO NYACK & GOOD SAMARITAN If you or a loved one are hospitalized at either Nyack or Good Samaritan hospitals, please have someone contact our parish office in order to arrange for a priestly visit. If you know, in advance, that you will be undergoing a procedure, anywhere, please see one of your parish priests in order to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick before you are admitted. If convenient, we could meet before or after any weekday or Sunday mass. We would also be most willing to visit you at your home. During your stay in the hospital, please make sure that your registration identifies you as a Catholic and be sure to request that a Eucharistic Minister visit you with Holy Communion each day you are there. When you return home, we can arrange for you to be visited by a Eucharistic Minister who will bring you Holy Communion. Remember, the hospitals do not contact the parish to let us know when a parishioner has been admitted. At present, Nyack Hospital does not have a Catholic priest chaplain. Only Good Samaritan has a Catholic chaplain on call 24/7. If you reach or a family member reaches out to us, we will gladly make a visit H. A. N. D. S. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Healing and Nurturing Distraught Survivors sponsors a bereavement support group for parents who have lost a child. It is facilitated by Ann Carucci. All groups meet from 6:30 8:00 PM at International Headquarters, 9 Scott Drive, New City. Services are free of charge. One on one services are also available. Please call for dates MISSA PRO POPOLO MASS FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE PARISH The parish is established to provide the parishioners with the helps of religion, especially with Mass. Every ordained pastor is required to offer one Mass, every week and every holyday of obligation for his parishioners. The Mass is referred to in Latin as the Missa Pro Popolo (Mass for the People). Because of the complexity of the typical parish schedule and the desirability of alternating celebrants at different Masses each week, the pastor may delegate an associate priest to celebrate this mass.
