MARRIAGES Arrangements should be made at least six months prior to the date selected THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 4, 2018 First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could live in peace and harmony with one another as he had planned. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, God s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is more powerful than men. Gospel: John 2:13-25 Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told them to destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in three days I will raise it up. The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Saint Michael the Archangel pray for them! 2018 CARDINAL S STEWARDSHIP APPEAL THIS IS COMMITMENT WEEKEND Now is the time for us to make a commitment to this year s campaign. This is Commitment Weekend here in our parish and throughout all of the parishes of the Archdiocese. While it is true that this year s 2018 Appeal comes so soon after our recently completed Renew & Rebuild Campaign, it is nonetheless vital that we try our best to dig deep and offer whatever sacrificial commitment our personal means will allow at this time. While the majority of the Renew and Rebuild fundraising was pledged to parish projects with a lesser amount going to the needs of the Archdiocese and our hurting parishes, the annual APPEAL supports the vital, year in and year out programs which rely on your generosity to continue their work in so many important areas: *Seminary Education for our future priests; *Dignified retirement care for our aged priests and religious; *Support for our ministry of Catholic religious education for our public school children; *Support for our mission to provide Catholic school education; *Vital funding for Catholic Charities and to the thousands of deserving men, women and children who come knocking on our door every year. Many of these, our brothers and sister in Christ, are destitute and have nowhere else to turn. How can we turn them away? If you were not prepared to make your commitment today than I ask that during the week you please spend some time prayerfully considering what kind of commitment may be able to make at this time to this year s 2018 Cardinal s Stewardship Appeal. 4 PARISH FAMILY MEAL 6-7 PM followed by the STATIONS OF THE CROSS at 7:30 PM in the church. **It would help if you RSVP to our parish office if you plan on dining with us.** NEXT WEEK - FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT LAETARE (REJOICE) SUNDAY The fourth Sunday of the Lenten Season has special significance because it helps Christians to celebrate their reaching an important milestone along our Lenten journey. We will have passed the half way mark in our approach to Easter and our celebration of the resurrection of the Lord and we rejoice in our seeing the light at the end of our journey. On Laetare Sunday, the church turns away from the purple or violet of Lent and dons the more joyful ROSE or pink colored vestments. In our Western Church, purple is the color of Lenten penance, and white is the color of feast days. Rose or pink is the color of Laetare which is derived naturally by mixing purple and white. On this day, flowers may also be placed on the altar. Laetare Sunday is considered a day for us Christians to relax from normal Lenten rigors, a day of hope with the ultimate joy of Easter being at last within sight. ANNUAL MASS OF CHRISM SAINT PATRICK S CATHEDRAL TH TUESDAY, MARCH 27 4 PM COUNTY-WIDE COACH BUS RIDE The faithful of our Rockland parishes are urged to make attendance at this very beautiful and unique Mass of Chrism (reserved seating) a special part of their Lenten observance. Four your convenience, the Rockland Deanery is, once again, sponsoring a comfortable coach bus which will be departing from the St. Francis of Assisi parking lot, Parrott Road, West Nyack, at 1 p.m. This special Mass, a tradition which goes back all the way to the 5th century of our church, is only celebrated once a year by our Cardinal Archbishop, Timothy Michael Dolan, who will be joined by his Auxiliary Bishops and hundreds of our parish and religious order priests and deacons. During the Mass, the Archbishop will also bless three sacred oils, Oil of the Catechumens, Oil of the Sick and Holy Chrism. These oils will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the entire Archdiocese during the upcoming year. Please contact the Deanery Office (St. Aedan s) at for further information.
