The passage ends on a note of hope. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 In exultant tones, Paul tells the Philippians to rejoice because Christ became man, died on the cross, rose from the dead, and sits triumphantly at the right hand of the Father. Gospel: Matthew 26:14 27:66 This is the solemn narrative of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew recounts the treachery and betrayal of Judas and then describes the events of the Last Supper, culminating in the institution of the Eucharist. Jesus endures the Agony in the Garden; he is then brought before Caiaphas and Pilate and condemned to death. After His resurrection, the centurions shouted, Clearly this was the Son of God! If anyone should say to you, Why are you doing this? reply, The Master has need of it.rather He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness, and found human in appearance, He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. The Church has named this Holy Week. It is holy because of what we pause to recall, the unfolding of God s plan for our salvation. The whole purpose of Holy week, therefore, is the remembrance of Christ s passion and death which led up to the glory of His Resurrection. For Catholics, this is, indeed, the most holy as well as unique week of the entire church year. It begins with the gracious invitation to re-enter the Holy City with Jesus and share in the Pascal Mystery of His suffering, dying and rising from the dead. To accomplish this end, Jesus instructs all the Master has need of it. As we hold the blessed palm branch, may we see it as our ticket or pass to enter all the events, which Jesus experienced, and which we will remember and celebrate this week. This week is holy, because we will respond through our prayers, fast and abstinence and our participation, in the ritual of walking with Jesus, dining with Him at the supper, and being with Him on Calvary and, later on, in the quiet of His tomb. Each event, every moment is directed by the Lord at the will of His Father. The chalice will not pass Him by. He will indeed drink of it. He requires us to respond to His saving actions and not simply remember. We are not to be detached observers.we are to try our best to be caught up into the joy and rapture of the Sacred Mysteries, which bring us ever closer to salvation. As we now begin this holy week, let us commit ourselves to do our best to immerse ourselves in the Triduum for two reasons. The Master has need of it, and because we have need of Him. The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist and the institution of the holy priesthood, all have a special significance for us this Holy Week. We ask all to join in prayer for the church and for our parish. The Master has need of you. He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (PREP) Registration for Religious Education Classes to begin in September for students who attended classes at St. Aedan s this year will be held as follows: Monday - May 1, 7:00 9:00PM Tuesday- May 2, 7:00 9:00PM NEW FAMILY REGISTRATION WILL BE HELD T UESDAY, 5/9. During Holy Week and Easter, our hearts, minds and prayers are especially focused, in a special way, on the Holy Land. Once a year, on Good Friday, Catholics throughout the world are called upon to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by our Holy Father, the annual Good Friday collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help portect the Holy Places. Your Good Friday donation helps support the most holy places we revere as Catholic Christians. For more information, visit< + SOLEMN STATIONS OF THE CROSS + GOOD FRIDAY EVENING 7:30 PM Via Delorosa Way of Sorrows On this most solemn night which we Christians dare to call Good Friday we are privileged to be captured up into Christ s painful journey along the road to Calvary. We will, in mind and spirit, stand at the foot of the cross with Mary his mother, John his beloved disciple and the crowds which gathered to witness this public spectacle just before Passover. We will, together, meditate on the humiliation of Christ, the Suffering Servant and His terrible crucifixion and death which brought about the forgiveness of sin for all people for all time. Come and join us here in our parish church as we pray and meditate on the Stations of the Cross and conclude our evening by meditating on the Five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary this final time before Easter. Yes, there are many activities on Good Friday the Fast and Abstinence - the Living Stations of the Cross at noon - the Passion at 3 and the Solemn Stations at 7:30. It can be a real drain. We can become hungry, thirsty, tired and a bit achy by all of this. So.can we even begin to imagine how Christ felt at the end of His day, His last day? This Good Friday, let s do all we can.for love of Him. We adore You O Christ and we praise you because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world. NEW PARISH BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITY SATURDAYS AT 9:45 AM Father John Palatucci will, once again, be leading a BIBLE STUDY class here at Saint Aedan s, on Saturday mornings beginning on April 29th. The study is entitled Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John. The class will meet over the course of eight weeks.
