Eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance. Eternal compassion, have mercy on us. Turn us to seek your face, and enable us to reflect your goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 L: A Reading from Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 46 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: God is our refuge and strength, a helper close close at hand, in time of distress, so we shall not fear though the earth should rock, though the mountains fall into the depths of the sea. Even though its waters rage and foam, even though the mountains be shaken by its waves. Refrain. Cantor: The waters of a river give joy to God s city, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within, it cannot be shaken; God will help it at the dawning of the day. Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken; God s voice roars forth, the earth shrinks away. Refrain. Cantor: Come, consider the works of the Lord, the redoubtable deeds God has done on the earth: putting an end to wars across the earth; breaking the bow, snapping the spear, burning the shields with fire. Be still and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth! Refrain.

3 The Second Reading: Romans 3:19-28 L: A Reading from Romans. Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: If you continue in my word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Holy Gospel: John 8:31-36 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 8 th Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, "You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there

4 forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ We pray for the Church ~ and for the lively grace of reformation and renewal: that the Spirit of God will continue to breathe life and faith into our world, our communities, our congregations, our families, and our lives. Lord, in your mercy We pray for the well-being of the Lutheran congregations of the Bedford Conference: that as we gather around the Word and Celebrate the Sacraments, we might hold fast to the Faith of the Apostles, and be inspired by the teachings of the Fathers and Reformers. Lord, in your mercy We pray for true freedom: that we may live in ways that bring us to the joys which God prepares for us. Lord in your mercy We pray for a spirit of wisdom and discernment: that in the midst of the confusion and uncertainties of our day, we may see that which is true, and pursue that which is good. Lord in your mercy We pray for world leaders, and those who hold office in national, state, and local governments: that they might govern and lead in ways which pursue that which is good, that which is just, and that which is dignified. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all who have been scarred by violence: that God will heal their wounds and give them strength and courage to move forward in life. Lord in your mercy We pray for all who are ill, especially and others whom we remember (pause); that God will visit them with patience and faith, and renew their bodies, their minds, and their spirits. Lord in your mercy We pray for our friends and loved ones who have gone to their rest in the hope of the resurrection: especially we remember ; that light eternal may shine upon them and, on the last day, they may rise with Christ, and all his people, to the joys of heaven. Lord, in your mercy With thankful hearts, we pray for the host of saints and witnesses who have gone before us ~ whose lives and ministries reflect the boundless graces of our God. Especially today we remember the Blessed Reformers, Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles, Jeremiah, the Prophet of old, St Paul, Apostle; and St John the Evangelist; that we may see, in them, the blessings which God has prepared for those who love Him, and boldly walk with them, in paths which are good and gracious. Lord, in your mercy

Gibson, who could speak both English and German, an ability much appreciated by the congregants. Lob sei Gott! (Praise be to God!) That thankfulness was short-lived as, in 1841, Rev. Rueben Weiser became Trinity s pastor and, like Father Yeager, spoke much better German than English. During Weiser s time in the county a Lutheran Church was built in Schellsburg and the Lutheran witness in Bedford County continued to grow. If you ve not done so already Would you please consider naming Trinity to receive a special Legacy Gift from your Estate? By doing so, you will assist those who follow us to continue to share Faithful and Meaningful Christian Ministries with the Families of Trinity and our Bedford Community!
